A Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to all the Eds and all the Liverpool fans, have a great Christmas and I hope everyone has a wonderful time.

My New Years wish will be that we are finally able to Win the League at the end of the season.

A thank you to all the Eds for their wonderful insight and Special mentions to Ed001 for putting in some much of his time and energy to provide us with his valuable information about the Club we all love, Ed002 for providing us with his vast knowledge about everything related to football, for his witty replies and for his patience in dealing with even the most trivial of question and Finally Ed025 for his patience in dealing with Liverpool Fans :P

(P. S: to all fans who argue with Ed002 on his opinion on Klopp and Liverpool need to understand that he says what he sees and is not blinded like us by our fantasy filled imagination)

Merry Christmas to everyone who uses the site,

Ed002 is brilliant but maybe he no longer believes in Father Christmas, as for me I am a believer, Jurgen is the man for us at LFC

Enjoy the holidays everyone,

I would like to ask your opinion on Ricardo Queresma. He has been in good form over the last 2 years, his attitude as changed a lot and he still seems to have the talent added to the fact that he seems to have improved in all aspects of the game including defense. Should Liverpool consider him, would he suit our present style or structure?
I believe he should be somebody we should consider.
I would also like other posters to provide their opnions.

I can't imagine how a player like him would fit into Klopp's ethos. I haven't seen him recently though.

2.) 10 Jun 2016 14:25:02
Didn't he come on against us in the final?

3.) 10 Jun 2016 14:40:36
Henry, when you typed the original post were you aware that Quaresma is 33 in a few weeks time?

Or were you suggesting that we offer him a job in hospitality?

4.) 10 Jun 2016 15:25:25
I do realize that, he will not in this case block somebody elses development and also, will not cost a bomb, he still has very good pace and plenty of creativity.

Still would like EdO1's response to my original post, Also would like to hear the thoughts of MK Scouser.

Thank you for everyon elses response.

5.) 10 Jun 2016 15:44:55
How would he not stop someone else's development if he's on the pitch instead of Ibe or ojo? He's 33 and isn't going to improve. He would probably need a year to get used to the league. A pointless signing. Average 33 year old players is certainly not what we need.

6.) 10 Jun 2016 17:07:06
Hi Henry. It's been a couple of years since I saw Quaresma play live. I believe it was a few Champions League games for Porto.

He has never been a player who impresses me if I'm honest. Portugal's answer to Aaron Lennon. All pace, and poor end product. He probably has slightly better technique than Lennon but I believe he has a very poor attitude to boot.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider him in his prime. Occasionally he whips in an absolutely lethal cross and you think "that's special", but time after time he just over hits it, crosses it straight to a defender, puts it into the keepers hands, or shanks it into the stand behind the goal.

In terms of finishing, he is a little bit better, but still erratic. If you watch his highlights then he looks like a 20 goal a season player, but ultimately he rarely scores double figures. A quick check online shows me he managed just 4 goals all season in a really poor Turkish League, playing for the team who ultimately finished as Champions. And we moan about Milner and Lallana for having terrible goal returns!

Sadly mate, Quaresma is just another winger who flatters to deceive.

7.) 10 Jun 2016 17:21:11
Quaresma has been poor and a great underachiever his whole career.

8.) 10 Jun 2016 17:30:09
Thank you guys for your response .

9.) 10 Jun 2016 23:06:26
quaresma is 4 times player lennon will ever be. quaresma won silverware none of our players won anything. quaresma is one of main portugal players and last 2 years scoring regularly for club and country and none of liverpool player isn't a starter internationally bar couts and skrtel. funny facts lol. quaresma has wonderful shot and outside of the foot pass lennon can sprint fast lol.

Another Ben arfa absolute waste of an amazing talent.

A question to the Eds.and fellow posters.
I want to know if we ever move into a Director of Football model do you think Arsene Wenger would be a good candidate if and when he leaves as the Manager from Arsenal (This is just a hypothetical question) . I would like to rephrase the question by asking Do u think Wenger has the qualities to be a Director of Football. The work he has done in terms to development of Arsenal as a football club is nothing short of remarkable .If you feel i need to ask this at a different page i will do so.

henry09

{Ed001's Note - Wenger would be wasted as a DoF, in my opinion.}

1.) 31 Jul 2015 19:44:37
why do you think that is ed01, i would assume wenger with his vast knowledge of football would be perfect for the role.

{Ed001's Note - because he would never be able to stop himself getting involved. He loves football too much to be away from the thick of it.}

We are usually linked to a lot of players some are genuine and some are not ,but those tend to be players who are in the news.My question to you Ed001 and Ed002,how effective is our scouting system and why are they not able to uncover great buys more often. And what suggestions would you give to improve the scouting system? would you be able to suggest a great scout how's services we should acquire or a management decision maker who can make a difference. Are FSG giving proper considerations to this aspect of the game according to you?

henry09

{Ed001's Note - it is more about who makes the decisions and how they are made that are the issues for me. While I am not a fan of Brendan's transfer dealings, as the manager he should be watching players in the flesh before they are bought. That should be the final piece before a choice is made from the shortlist provided by the scouts. Long before that, every player that has received positive scouting feedback should have been thoroughly researched, not just how they perform on the pitch, but what they are like off it. Their injury history should be checked out, what kind of life they lead etc should all be known before signing.

From what I can gather, the manager is not watching players in the flesh, it is being done on video footage and scouting reports, from various members of staff. That needs to change. Forget worrying about paper talk when the manager of the club is spotted at a different game, the players need to be watched properly before being bought. While you can never get every signing right, we are getting far too few right lately and it is important we fix that.

To me FSG are not doing enough with regards to this area of the club. Paisley would have known every area of a player's life before making a decision on them. Mistakes like Balotelli could have easily been avoided just by a simple background check. It seems like they are just not putting enough effort into forward planning, so that we are left diving into deals like Balotelli in desperation. Perhaps sometimes they would be better keeping their money in their pocket, as we have played better after a quiet transfer window. I am reminded of a famous quote by Benjamin Franklin, 'by failing to prepare you are preparing to fail'. We are sadly very much preparing to fail of late.}

1.) 23 Jul 2015 09:47:39
In response to the eds comments, you always used to see fergie in the stands, basically every weekend he would watch a game that's not United, learning players and opposition.

{Ed001's Note - exactly, which is what Rodgers should be doing every day we are not playing he should be watching someone else and trying to learn something, as well as scouting players.}

2.) 23 Jul 2015 09:51:24
Our Scouting is pretty poor as we never bring the players in the area we needed and the right one. We take gamble and pure gamble.

3.) 23 Jul 2015 09:59:33
Ed001 - Brendan can't even be bothered to go to the u21s games, let along to further afield to scout players!

{Ed001's Note - that should be a sackable offence in my book. The manager of the club should be at every Liverpool game he can be, at every level.}

4.) 23 Jul 2015 10:20:16
To be fair to Brendan and in complete agreement with ed1.

Is there really enough time nowadays for a manager to go watch a player as thoroughly as is needed to get a proper gage of what they are like.

Take this season into account the amount of games and travelling we are going to be doing, if Brendan wanted to watch say Kovacic he's going to potentially manage say at a long shot 5 matches, now is that enough to make a proper judgment on a player.

A question though taking the above into account - we may not do it - but do other clubs compensate this and say Wenger wanted Carvalho for instance, he knows he isn't going to get to watch him as much as he would like unless there was an end of season tournament like this year. Would they then send one of there most experienced and trusted scouts and allocate him to just watching Carvalho for the majority of the season ?

I understand there are some players that truthfully don't need to be watches ott like Milner for example. You know what you are going to get and you can get film on him from the past 10 years and struggle to find a game where he didn't give 100%

If it was someone like Salvio at Benfica then Brendan has to be honest and say I can't get to Portugal enough to actually watch the boy so ill send our top scout and sit him on salvio for at least 20 games but he can still try to get out there but how many times did we watch Moreno, markovic, lallana and can for example.

There can't be enough going into it otherwise we wouldn't end up with some of the players we do like ed eluded to further up the page.

Few questions.

How much does a scout make per year on average and how come more isn't invested into them?

Would the club ever go off old scouting reports when making a decision over a player for example Alberto who was sort out by Rafa would people in the staff remember that and say recommend said player ?

Do the club ever go off pundits and motd when selecting a player for example lallana last year was the highlight reel king, say it was April and he hadn't been watched much but he was getting into the England squad, had all the pundits raving about him and was looking boss on motd would they buy him from that alone, or they have to at least be watched a certain amount of times by a scout/manager?

Cheers ed nice bit of discussion for once, cudos on the engagement btw 😊

{Ed002's Note - Typically there are a number of people that a club retains or employs regarding the "scouting" of players including a permanent Chief Scout and a perhaps a Head of International Scouting who all will report in to the club via a Director of Football or whatever. There is also be a guy who co-ordinates all of the reports and ensures that they go to the correct person. Obviously no one at the first team level is going to see or be interested in any reports related to kids so there is a hierarchy that deals with young kids, potential academy players up to the first team squad. There are then scouts retained by clubs in specific countries and/or areas of the world - France, South America, Adriatic & Old Eastern Bloc, Iberia etc.. On top of that there will be freelance scouts (often ex-referees and amateur club staff who will stay within their particular area of expertise and region). Once a player has been looked at a couple of times and reports reviewed, then someone from further up this chain will take a look. Eventually a chief scout will take a look, or if it is a potential first team player, then perhaps a coach or manager will take a look. Some clubs have advisors which include, taking one EPL side as an example, ex-managers.}

5.) 23 Jul 2015 10:37:21
Not going to disagree with that. Martinez is a terrible manager but he bothers to go to Everton academy games at least. I feel sorry for the kids at Liverpool with this guy in charge.

6.) 23 Jul 2015 10:55:45
Ed001, Isn´t this a good reason to have a sporting director or DOF who can take some of the responsibility of the Manager/headcoach? He would have time for watching the youth, attending matches watching transfer targets etc. Leaving BR to just coach the 1st team.

If Benteke is a BR signing, then I doubt that BR have any idea how Benteke plays. We have so many creative players who likes to play a throughball, and Benteke is really poor at timing his runs which often results in a offside decision. This is why I think that Ings will be a better signing than Benteke (He has got much better anticipation)

I might come across as a negative person, but I´m just concerned that the club seem to put so little effort in, and would rather pay the price for not being prepared, than do that little further research to see if a player fit in properly. As Ed001 said we wasted a great deal of money on Balo, and I´m just afraid that we might loose even more money on Benteke.

{Ed001's Note - I don't see how coaching the first team requires that much time? How is he meant to learn about the U21s and know if they are ready to step up to the first team if he has not seen them play? How is he meant to see the full picture of an opposition's play if he is not at the ground scouting them?

Craig Bellamy has talked about it at length in the season just gone, how we didn't understand what Basel were doing, as no one had the insight to see that they were changing formation when they got the ball. When they defended they used a back four, when they got the ball it became a 3, and it totally confused our whole coaching staff. Why the hell had Rodgers not gone and watched them properly after the first game? He couldn't understand what they were doing after that match, so go and find out, do your job for heaven's sake and find out how to deal with them to win us the second game!

There is no excuse for not taking the time to go and watch games, video footage is useful, all the computer animations are good, but there is no substitute for actually being there and watching it live.}

7.) 23 Jul 2015 12:43:07
I never really usd to watch the kids before Brendan because I just though what's the point, there never going to get a chance so why bother getting your hopes up.

Then Brendan came in and there seemed to be a big focus on youth so I started watching all the games and have seen Brendan only a few times and even then I might be being kind.

It is utterly disgusting, i know he brings a lot of the kids up to Melwood but he definatly won't be bringing them all up so is he missing someone. I assume that js there is someone playing well then Brendan will certainly be informed but he has to get to the games to properly see them.

Martinez does it. He's never bloody away from them.

I hope Salah returns here soon, we all miss his contribution to this site. He is an inspiration for us Fans on how to support this club as well as on how to engage with our rivals. He is also a fantastic poster and provides us with a balance point of view. I hope and pray for him to get well soon.

I know that Waro is a long time poster here at the site and the Eds respect him. He like all posters is entitled to his opinion. I know the owners have a lot of catching up to do with the fan engagement like ticket pricing and transparency but till now they haven't been that bad. They have made mistakes, they have learned from a few and haven't learned from a few.

But you cannot expect the owners to be altruistic, of course they would like to make profit at some point in time and would also want the club to be more self reliant but expecting them to pump in their own money is expecting a lot. I for one don't know about the expenses of running a club and the internal challenges faced by the owners so wouldn't comment on it but what I can see and understand they have done a decent job. They can and dare I say they will improve in the future but for now we have to wait and watch for what happens without being to judgemental.
