I must really say Joel Matip has become a key figure and one of our best players. Not because he scored but the way he has improved I'd say we near have two Virgil Van Dijk on the field. Kudos and great win today Ynwa.

Yes he has been doing right but id still prefer Gomez in there with Virgil. I really don't like the tinker with CBs. Pick a pair for the season and let them shore it up.

Totally agree y2k3
Joel is playing better than ever. He was immense yesterday and surely has to be first choice alongside VVD.

He's become incredibly dominant and proactive with his tackling. Really impressed.

Thought he was fantastic yesterday. A few people who love to defend their favourites but happily criticise Matip won’t agree though. Guaranteed.

He scares me when he's on and I would also prefer Gomez on BUT he has improved alot, I think this is down to how good we are at the back, he was kind of the odd one out for me, not good enough and what not but not he's fitting right in, perfect choice if Gomez or VVD are injured.

Well said mate. He's playing out of his skin and is keeping jo out the team because of it. That's what we want. VVD is playing at 50% and hasn't hit 'god mode' yet and Joel is arguably our best defender on form.

He’s improved a lot but you all must have forgot just how much better the Gomez/ VVD partnership was before joe got injured. Gomez is the much better player.

Competition for places is what we need and there is plenty of games to be played this year.

He has been outstanding along with big Virg and Joe.

I prefer Gomez personally too, but credit where its due Matip has done a job more often than not since the turn of the year! And we didn't pay 80 mil for either of them :)

I don’t think anyone is saying that Matip is a better player than Gomez but Matip always seems to get the criticism. Yes VVD / Gomez combination was good last season but Gomez only featured in the league 16 times and 3 of them were at right back. We finished the season with record points and the European cup. Matip might not be our best player but he played his part in that just as much as the superstars and fan favourites. The fans who criticise Matip are normally the same ones tripping over themselves to defend their favourites if someone dare criticise them.

Keep Matip along with VVD until one of them gets injured or loses form. Gomez should be playing his utmost in training to give Klopp a selection headache and Joel should be maintaining his exceptional form knowing that Gomez is waiting in the wings.
These are the sort of problems that would be nice to have in all positions on the field.

Players should be picked on current form. Gomez is not near the form of early last year. Whereas Matip is firing on all cylinders just like the second half of last year. It's a simple thing, why complicate it?

Spot on, JK23. Gomez is a brilliant prospect that could walk into a Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal back line right now, IMO. He is however, behind Matip right now cos well, Matip has upped his game immensely since mid last season and has become a better foil for VVD and for me, Klopp has to run with this partnership and not change it for anything. If Gomez wants his spot back then he will have to rip it off Matip's back, just like Matip did when he was out injured. That's football.

I'l be honest to admit I've never been the biggest matip fan and I've seen too many faults in his game over the years to rate him highly BUT I must say right now I'm in appreciation of how he's playing so well over the last 6 months. I always feel that a confident Gomez and vvd is our best combo but right now matip fully deserves his spot as long as he can keep performing. It's refreshing to have this competition with Gomez that will see them both knowing they need to play at the highest level to earn their place.

Matips big improvement is he's shown more aggression in attacking the ball and player instead of the previous more timid relaxed matip. Confidence is the big key to his up turn in performance.
