Hi Ed’s and reds, I don’t recall seeing one, but did anyone do a match review for the Shrewsbury game? Would be an interesting read?

{Ed001's Note - I really haven't had time mate. The problem is that we play pretty much the same way no matter what team we point out, so there is not a lot really new to say about our team, even when it is the kids out there. Shrewsbury were so passive and, frankly, embarrassing, that it would basically end up a long dig at Sam Ricketts for his inability to do the basics. I mean it was such a simple job to send his team out fired up, Klopp had given him the ammunition to use by not being there, but he couldn't even do that. Incompetence at its finest.}

A few thoughts

- agree with Ed, was surprised how little Shrewsbury came out to play
- having said that, we passed the ball and controlled possession incredibly well and they couldn’t get near us
- Chirivella In particular managed the game from midfield like a real midfield general, and the way he celebrated at the end gives me real hope he might yet make it at the highest level. exceptionally composed on the ball but showed a bit of grit too
- Jones and Elliott always looked dangerous on the ball upfront however we somehow struggled to really create the killer finish (apart from one huge opportunity that was from Elliott the Nico Williams but was very well saved) . those two really are looking ready to step up though
- most pleasing of all was defence was excellent too with Sepp and Hoever far more composed than they’ve been in previous matches, and dealt really well with anything lumped forward (as well as on the corners which I was a bit worried about beforehand)
- fullbacks were excellent in defence and also in getting forward but just unlucky in the final third (got into good positions but the crosses tended to come in a little low)

Overall Shrewsbury were completely outclassed for most of the game, and the only place we looked like an u23 team was how we seemed to lack the experience and ruthlessness required in the final third. A bit more experience upfront and it could easily have been 3 nil or more.

SGRed, that is a good, accurate report. One thing I would add is that Shrewsbury tried to bully the Liverpool boys with an unnecessarily physical approach. Shrewsbury were penalised 14 times for fouls against just 1 foul awarded against Liverpool but the young Liverpool players just refused to be bullied.

When the nutmeg from Jones happened and he got instantly donked in the face I nearly threw my phone. Can't believe he didn't get carded for that. Curtis and Harvey look destined for long careers, Neco and Pedro are ready and I have high hopes for Sepp and Ki Jana. They may need to go on loan to get regular football, especially with our strength in depth, but we have some amazing kids at our disposal. Oldest player was 22!
