Was just wondering what ed and posters reckon bout the Thiago signing and whether or not he is the most 'high profile' signing Liverpool of a) recent years or b) ever?

Most of the obvious candidates became high profile whilst at the club (Alonso, Coutinho, Suarez, Rush, Keegan etc) .

The only one off the top of my head is Morientes, even though he wasn't that successful a signing. Anyone have any other ideas?

I'd say Torres by a clear distance. Couldn't believe it when he signed.

Alison would have been higher profile as well I would think, he was being called the best goalie in the world when we signed him.

Torres is a good shout, but he was still pretty young when we got him. And as he said in an interview only this week, he was at the height of his powers when up front for us

On a side not, I think I read that Torres had a documentary coming out on Netflix this weekend. Keep an eye out for it.

We’ve never signed a player like this. To take a 29 year old Primed world class midfielder from the Champions of Europe and one of the biggest clubs in world football.
We’ve never done this it’s massive.

Completely agree LFC8, hence the reason I asked the question.

I disagree, guys. Torres and Allison were deemed to be very good players. Klopp said Allison was the finished article along with VVD when he signed them at LFC. Having said that, they were not any where near the status that Thiago currently is before they arrived at Liverpool.

I have thought this thru and in my 37 years of supporting this great club, Thiago is the only, established, recognized, widely-regarded world class player (one who is currently on top of his game) that I have seen arrive at LFC.

{Ed002's Note - Alison was not a Klopp choice - he wanted someone else. Maybe he said that for effect.}

Collymore was big back in the day but obviously flopped.

Karl Heinz Riedle and Marcus Babbel are two but there's not been many. What a great signing this could be!

I had this exact conversation today at work. It concluded with us both agreeing he is Liverpool's biggest transfer (in terms of pedigree) in the Premier League era. Going by achievements in the sport, reputation, hype, excitement, the size of club they were coming from etc.

The closest to it that i can think of is actually Joe Cole. I remember him coming to us with an immense reputation and pedigree but he just never got close to living up to expectation. Personally i think Thiago is a completely different level to Cole though. Cole was always a bit over rated and more of a beneficiary of a top team. Thiago makes top teams tick.

Torres by a mile.

I would say he probably has the highest standing of any player we have signed recently. Viewed as one of the best in his position in the world. Torres was a big name but his career was stagnating a little before he came to us, It probably felt a bigger signing than Thiago as we had a poorer squad at the time and were desperate for more quality. Thiago has just been added to an already world class team.

King kenny was big, ok at Celtic, but a big money move for then.

Litmanen?

For me it was Allison, literally the one keeper everyone wanted and we got him. Looking forward to seeing what Thiago can bring to the side.

{Ed0666's Note - I think a lot of people wanted Oblak also as Allison was relatively unknown to most. So glad we got Ali though mate.

WarMachine, Litmanen had the pedigree, but Barcelona were prepared to let him go go on the cheap (Bosman possibly? ) because of his injuries had seen him fall out of favour. Thiago's a bit different in the sense that Bayern want to keep him.

Harry Kewell in 2003. What an exciting signing at the time, beating the likes of Barca, Man U etc to his signature.

{Ed0666's Note - In hindsight I wish United would have beaten us to his signature 😂

Yes, Ed02. I do remember now that Klopp wanted Oblak at first. Not bothered really. He did not want Salah either at first and see what happened.

Agreed something red - and unfortunately he was injured with us also albeit I think he broke his arm or something whilst playing for Finland and that was pretty much his that. He was talked up as the next Dalglish when he arrived.
