Thanks for that Ed, very interesting read.

I was surprised not to see Ben White on the list (or even an honorable mention) . What's your view of him? What are the shortcomings that keep him off the list?

{Ed001's Note - he has been playing in midfield and right-back for large chunks of the season. When they have both played in defence together, Webster has looked a far better centre-back.}

Unusually, i'd disagree with ye there on a lot of that list!

{Ed001's Note - that's alright, if we all agreed all the time life would be boring! So who would you have in?} Become a Patron!

Thanks Ed. Given the restrictions of Home Grown rules and our need for a CB, plus our (relative) shortage of cash, would you pick one of those for Liverpool to go for, and if so, who do you think would have the best chance of fitting how we play (other than Joe Gomez, obvs! )?

I haven't seen anywhere near as much of these guys as you, but I definitely wouldn't go Coady despite the nostalgia - too slow and better suited to a back 3. I'd also discount Stones, Holding and Evans as I can't see City, Arsenal or Leicester selling to us (even if we wanted them) . Tompkins is too old and very slow, and jack O'Connell seemed quite slow in our last game (just based on one game, though) . I also can't see us going for Ben Mee because of age and resale - he's going to be 32 next season.

So that leaves Konsa and Webster. It's a tough call, but I would probably go for Konsa (if he's affordable and Villa are amenable) as he's a couple of years younger. However, I think he would be costly given the way he's settled in at Villa.

What would your choice be?

{Ed001's Note - I am with you, though I would probably take Webster as I think he would be cheaper and is what we need right now, a ready-to-go centre-back.} Become a Patron!

Not as much who'd i have in as what order on the list they'd be although to be honest Tompkins would not have been in my top 10.i'd have had Stones (not this season MOTD fever) and Gomez a lot higher up the list, Konsa aswell maybe. but like you say, all about opinions.

{Ed001's Note - I can see that, I do find I change the placings multiple times as I am doing the list anyway. Give it another week and I would probably shuffle them a bit, though Stones still needs to show he can actually defend under pressure. Not one team has put him under any pressure at the back since his form improved. That was when he fell to pieces in the past.} Become a Patron!

He's made mistakes at City but playing at City under Pep does leave the centre halves open to the odd error, especially for a talented young Englishman trying to live up to the countrys hype of making him the next Bobby Moore.

Nice read, Ed. Not sure if Ben Mee would make my list cos I think he has stagnated a bit at Burnley. I would happily swap Godfrey for Mee. I do love your choice of Konsa. The kid is the real deal and Mings is not a patch on him cos his talent and ability is there for all to see, IMO. One to watch for the future, that Konsa fellow.

As for Stones, I agree with you. He simply cannot play in an open style system where CB’s are left on their own. He is a poor one v one defender, lacks concentration and position ally suspect. Hence, why he has thrived in a more defensive setup after Pep tweaked the system and brought in Dias. All in all, great list.

{Ed001's Note - I am not sure how Mee has stagnated, though Burnley clearly have due to a lack of investment.} Become a Patron!

People do realise the "kid" Konsa is only 5 months younger than Gomez don't they?

I never thought Johnny would have been no1 as am reading it but yeah when you think about it he’s been an outstanding signing. The villa lad look a great prospect.
Good read eds👍🏻.

Godfrey is the one that got away. He would have made a massive difference to our squad.

Maguire should get on the list though. They are second in the league and he is there go to cb. I am not saying high on the list but somewhere on it.

An honourable mention from me to Liam Cooper as well Ed.

I’m not saying he should be in the top 10, but when you consider he’s gone from Chesterfield to Leeds and played under some awful “old school” managers at the club, to where he is now as captain of a revolutionary Bielsa team sitting in mid table and not looking completely out of his depth, I felt he was worth a mention!

Does he make mistakes? Absolutely, but then who wouldn’t make the odd mistake as a CB in a Bielsa team?

Great list though Ed. I agree Konza does look a really good player.

{Ed001's Note - he is far too rash for my liking Cooper. Goes on mad sprees of just hacking at everything, running around wild. Needs to calm down.} Become a Patron!
