Please, please, please tell me we are not going back to the days of seeing players perform well at tournaments and buying them off the of that. Re Isaak when we bought Diouf I think it was possibly the worst human being on the planet and an awful footballer.

{Ed002's Note - I would not hold your breath about Isak.}

Difference between Isak and Diouff is that Isak has been playing well for a few years and is well thought of, Diouff hadn’t and wasn’t.

He’s a good player him. Raw, but very talented.

That guy from Switzerland looks decent we should definitely take a chance in him. Shaq something.

It’s common knowledge that the Diouf deal was arranged prior to the 2002 World Cup.

That Diouff guy is a massive douche.

Before signing for Liverpool Diouf won the African player of the year two times in a row, beating players like Etoo, Okocha, Kanu and Kuffour to the award.
I think Diouf is the worst signing ever for Liverpool but let’s not rewrite history, Diouf was clearly very well thought of at the time. Saying Isak is more highly rated than Diouf was when we signed him is nonsense.

{Ed001's Note - he was highly rated, but he was also known to be a troublemaker, a causer of problems off the pitch. Isak is also very highly rated but has a better rep, in Spain Luis Garcia described him as a complete footballer and he is extremely highly rated. It really depends on how you want to rate someone. Outside Africa and France, Diouf was pretty much an unknown. Until these Euros, Isak was pretty much an unknown outside of Sweden and Spain.}

Spot on, Thunderbird 2. Diouf was a beast of a footballer before we signed him. He was on top of his game and Senegal's qualification for the WC would NEVER have happened had it not been for Diouf who along with Aliou Cisse, and Khalilou Fadiga, carried that team on their backs.

All that fame and hype went to his head esp with the big move to LFC and it went downhill from there. Ed01 is correct that outside France (where I lived at the time) and Africa, Diouf was unknown BUT it was on this hype in France that Diouf was signed before the WC. Like you say, Diouf was a truly crap signing BUT let us not act as if he was some scrub we picked up. He wasn't. Diouf was pure filth. The End.

I can’t think that Diouff was ever a beast at any time in France. He was no Djibril Cisse.

Diouff never topped the goalscoring charts at any point, I think even Bruno Cheyrou scored more than Diouff did in the season before he signed for us. I was gutted we signed him as I felt Anelka had done more than enough to warrant signing him and it just felt like penny pinching exercise as Anelka would have cost more.

VVVV, Anelka (who I love still) was never on top of the scoring charts either so your point is moot. Also, Djibril Cisse had nowhere near the ability Diouf had before we signed him. Not in the least and Diouf was not a goalscorer either so again, your comparison is false. He was more of a support forward with lots of ability and license to roam.

The point remains that Diouf turned out to be a crap signing and Anelka would have been better iorcfven both BUT let’s not rewrite history just cos Diouf became a true piece of work. He was pure filth and we all knew it at the time cos I lived in France and he was killing it for both club and country, something Anelka and Cisse were NOT doing.
