Actually feel for tsimikas, here a year, to a fantastic left back. Gets his chance and takes it with both hands, only to be dropped. I know Robbo has earnt his spot, but no goals conceded and looking better each time, he deserved to stay in. for me it just sends the message that klopp has his favourites and when it matters doesn’t want to rely on others. Could arguably say the same for jota. two in two. didn’t deserve to lose his spot.

Thanks Ed. Always look forward to your insights - even if the results don’t go the way I had hoped. Felt Tsimikas should have kept his place too. Love Robertson but he looked very rusty and his challenger for that spot had been doing well.

{Ed001's Note - cheers.}

Very harsh on Timiskas ed001, he should have started 100%.

I felt for Fabs he had a very poor game and that effected us massively but it was totally understandable.

ED, how do you break down a 10 man defense? More outside shooting? Let them push forward and counter off of their counter? Or mix and match? It seems over the years in these situations we continuously cross into the box and it doesn't work. Thanks for the review!

You have to move the ball quicker and squeeze the opposition. Win the ball back high and keep the pressure on. This then gets the crowd going and the opposition drops even deeper.

VVD is just back so is not 100% and Fabs plus Hendo we’re way off the pace, so we never built any real pressure. It’s early though it will come.

This is the third season in a row that Chelsea have come to Anfield and concentrated most of their attack down Liverpool’s RH side and, in particular, in the hole left by an advanced TAA.
Why can’t we do anything about that? Leave the full back at home and then what do they have?
I appreciate also that Chelsea got plaudits for a very good defensive performance.
To my mind, they’d have done that anyway in the second half, same as the CL final.
They’ve spent a lot of money, much of it on attacking talent, and it all comes down to a packed defence?
It’s the lowest denominator as far as football goes for me, and I dislike Tuchel’s tactics intensely.
They’re a tough watch under him, so much for the reported beautiful football that Abramovich wanted to see a season ago.

You need to stretch them, which we didn't do overly well because Robertson and Henderson were off the pace and Trent was a little off it too. You can't let them push forward because they're happy to stay where they are. Fergie's United used to solve those problems by just peppering crosses in the box.

Excellent article Ed. There is this prevailing view that Liverpool needed more forward options from off the bench to change things up, but the lack of delivery would have left them equally little to work with. People are also complaining that we were predictable and looked found out, but my goodness, of all games to use an example, a second half with rusty players against a 10-man Chelsea completely packed inside their box? I don't know how that logic prevails.

Chelsea did have a couple of good chances, but that's just what great teams do. Watch any El Clasico and both teams always create good chances. We are still a great team, I don't know why people have this expectation that every season has to be a certainty for us to win. Just see how the season pans out rather than shrieking about signings and FSG 3 games into a season, it's pathetic.

Rainbow, how exactly do you stretch a back 7?

12.) 30 Aug 2021
30 Aug 2021 18:22:11
Instead of passing it around the back four robotic, it should’ve been moved quicker. Trent needed to be out wide and Salah closer to the Goal rather than the corner flag. The subs were wrong also, and too slow to be made.

I would have liked the subs to have come on around the 60 minute mark, 30 minutes of peppering the chelsea goal should have reaped there rewards.

What i can never understand with having the man advantage is why the extra man does not bring the ball forward and drive into the space, chlesea would then have had to leave a man behind to deal with that, we always seem to struggle playing against 10 men, yet when Man C.

14.) 30 Aug 2021
30 Aug 2021 18:35:12
Yet when man city play against 10 men they end up thrashing them, still feels like 2 points dropped to me, yet i will concede chelsea had goalden chances to score even more goals when they had there full 11.

It's a bit harder to break down 10 Chelsea players than 10 Arsenal players, kenny. So I'm not sure about that comparison.

Actually, it's arguably harder to break down 10 Chelsea players than 11 Arsenal ones currently.

{Ed0666's Note - it’s harder to break down 10 Chelsea players than 11 arsenal players I would say.

Man City lost at home to Leeds last season when Leeds played the 2nd half with ten men.
Playing against 10 doesn't guarantee anything.

That same Man City who thrash 10 man teams have failed to beat Chelsea in their last 3 meetings.

Completely agree with switching Henderson and Elliot. Even though Elliot has a great understanding with Trent and Salah it would have at least changed things around for last 20 mins. Either that or bring Keita or ox on to break through the midfield. 7 points from 9, a good start.

Greta review Ed, won’t Robertson’s rustiness and need of games be resolved by him playing three times in a couple days for Scotland? I would be Tsimikas will start against leeds as Roberson might be knackered!

{Ed001's Note - good point.}

Agree with your review Ed. I think it’s somewhat disconcerting that Klopp seems loathe to use the squad unless his hand is forced. Him playing Henderson and Fabinho at centre back last season was one of the main reasons for our slump, and the Chelsea game showed he has an issue with this still as Robertson was miles off it, and Tsimikas has been very good in the two games he has played, yet still found himself in the bench. He needs to put a little more faith in the squad, having favorites will cause problems, especially when players like Tsimikas are earning their place on merit.

VVVV, good question esp if you have a team playing 5 defenders across the pitch sitting deep in their final 25 yards of the pitch with two mid’s sitting at the centre.

Also, moving the ball quicker is all well and good BUT how do you do that where there are 9 players across the final third esp since playing against 10 men means even LESS space to run into and drag the defenders out of position as there’s only so much space to drag them into?

Pressing high? Will be interesting to know how you press a low block cos that is not a thing either, IMO. All in all, we did not do enuff to test them and that to me, is mainly due to the formidable team and defensive structure Chelsea have even tho, we could have done more. We move on.
