Hi Ed002

Could you share a a bit more about the business model Chelsea has that has enabled them to have such strong purchasing power and attractive wage model?

And likewise, what would you change about the current Liverpool's one so that we are less hand to mouth?

Thanks in advance.

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea have income from revenue (they are in profit at the moment, Liverpool are running at a loss), from a small amount the owner can add (which they did not use this summer - whereas Liverpool have not paid for last seasons transfers) and raise a lot of money from player sales (Liverpool don’t).}

So judging by that, am I right in saying the chelsea brand, sells more than the Liverpool brand currently? I’m quite surprised by that if that’s the case. I would have thought the Liverpool brand is a more powerful/ popular business entity world wide than chelsea are.

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what you are talking about. If it is mugs and bobble hats from the club shop I am afraid I really don’t know.}

The interesting component is the raising of the money from sales - for a while now Chelsea have had an above average number of youngsters coming through their development system who are eventually loaned out and then sold (there are a few who make the grade at Chelsea but as a percentage of intake it would be a small number) .

We seem to be shifting our model a little bit with the intake leading up to the change in rules about signing (overseas) U-18’s and continuing with British youngsters at the moment e. g. Gordon, Clark etc. unfortunately we are still encumbered by signings made on long contracts that tended more towards (supposedly) players who were (near to being) the finished article who have turned out to have a limited resale value.

Questions are - will Chelsea’s transfer income slow and will we see Liverpool be one a place to harvest transfer profits when the kids reach a reasonable market valuation in their early 20s, or is there the possibility that they will become Liverpool’s class of 2021.

I don’t think it’s brand recognition. It seems Chelsea is just ran better.

I believe a lot of their financial success comes from their loan and youth system. Chelsea seem to be always selling players or loaning them out.

Also like United, Chelsea seem to of been ahead of us in the sponsorship game as well. Only now does it feel like we’re not catching up what with the Nike deal and all.

Speaking of Nike, I grew up in Liverpool and we pronounced it NYK. But here in the states it’s Nikey? Does anyone know, or should I submit this question to Mt Olympus?

Chelsea have an extremely rich owner (questionable as to how the wealth was gained) and they have made an awful lot of money from sales, we haven't. Two completely different models of how to run a club.

Spend and net spend over the last 3 years

LFC 129, 46
MU 426, 336
MC 402, 250
CFC 365, 65

Chelsea have raised significant amounts from sales that have enabled them to invest and have a net spend similar to us. It’s a bit like when we had the pipco money.
