Ed's and fellow Reds, I'm curious how/ where you'd rank Henderson as captain? He's delivered Champions League, premier league, and world champion trophies as captain. Not a bad resume at all. I think he's a strong leader and there's an argument for him being a better leader than Stevie. Thoughts?

Love Henderson. A great roll model for the younger fan's and will be very sorely missed when he hangs up his boots.

{Ed0666's Note - well said Larry

Might be an unpopular opinion but for me it’s evidently clear that Klopp is the leader that has brought all this success.

But hats off to Hendo he has been one of his generals on the pitch.

But without Klopp none of the names success would have come these last few years.

agree barry. I think there's an argument to be made that the reason we didn't win the title under Rodgers was that we were missing Henderson for that Chelsea match, but I guess we'll never know.

For me personally, nowhere near Stevie as a player or captain but dats no slight because for me Stevie is the best player allround that played for us in my memory of being a fan (barnes, Robbie nd Salah close) . I think Hendo is struggling more often than he puts in good performances these days and his time as a nailed on starter may be coming to an end but that shouldn't take away from the great job He has done for us. Has being a terrific player and person at the club for the last decade.

Theres no denying that Stevie was a brilliant player and inspirational on the field. But if some of the stories are true about his off-field behaviour (eg pressuring players into going on the lash) and his unwillingness to sacrifice himself for the team (eg unwilling to play certain roles on the field) then Im not entirely convinced he is that great a captain. IMHO I reckon he could have been just as inspirational without being captain. Having said that, you could make a strong argument he was the best suited to that role then but Hendo is the best suited to that role now.

I think it's hard for fans to rate how good a captain a player is unless you're a fly on the wall in the dressing room. As a player, he's been very good but honestly I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as Gerrard or Alonso when comparing him to other Liverpool centre midfielders of my lifetime.

Pressuring players to go on the lash? are you serious? these are grown men, i sure the sentence"thanks for the invite Stevie but i'll leave you to it"wasnt beyond them. the term would you jump off a cliff come to mind. The bloke carried us for a decade, that's good enough for me.

as a leader maybe yes
but as a player he's average.

Henderson? Average? Man, what are you people watching lol.

Jadon there have been numerous rumours about the bullying of foreign players during Gerrard's time as captain. These have come up on this site several times before. Obviously it's up to you whether you believe them or not as there is no official evidence. Personally I do tend to believe them as I am well-acquainted with someone who is friends with someone who was in the Liverpool setup during the 90s and 00s and he has told me the same as what I have read on this site.

Not a better player than Stevie but a better leader and captain. It will be every hard to replace Henderson the captain, he is surely a role model for all young player.

Personally I rate Hendo as a great captain. He seems to be the kind of person who holds his own standards both on and off the pitch to a high standard and expects everyone to do the same. As for the SG Hendo debate I see it like this…
SG had the ability to single handedly win a game, come up with the insane volley and score the goal, Hendo seems to drive the team as a collective, keeping everyone focused getting stuck in to get the rest to push harder.

Milner is just as important as Hendo. Milner does most of the important speeches in the changing room.

Having an armband doesn't really win you many more trophies but ability does and there is no doubt in my mind Gerrard definitely had more ability. that's not to say Henderson wasn't a good player, he clearly was but he had a better team around him and off course Jurgen Klopp.

Really difficult to gauge this because there is so much we'll never see or know.

On the pitch, Stevie clearly the better player in terms of raw stats, individual honors. They've lifted the same number of trophies as Captain - isn't that crazy to say lol.

Off the pitch, hard to know so don't want to split hairs there to be fair.

Would Hendo have been as influential a Captain in the same teams Stevie played in at his peak? I find that difficult to believe that Hendo would have lifted the lads in the 2005 CL final like Stevie did, or in the FA Cup vs West Ham.

I don’t think you can compare him and Stevie obviously Stevie was a lot better player but they are playing in totally different teams with totally different managers. Stevie had his faults but playing in some pretty average teams at times carried us and he just started his career when drinking was part of the times would he have got away with some of the stuff under Klopp I don’t think so.
Jordan on the other hand 100% professional that had made more of his talents than they are but he has played with far better players under a manager that is miles above that of Stevie’s.

A great player and a fantastic captain. Hard to really compare the two but yeah I'd say Hendo is the better captain hands down.

There was a video of a no fan match in lockdown that just focused on Hendos encouragement and organising of the team, Jesus he never shut up, he was brilliant.

@Markp, is being a leader all about making speeches in the dressing room then?

I think Hendo is a better natural leader than Gerrard although Gerrard is a clearly better player. The trouble with Gerrard is he is not a very pleasant individual as I witnessed first hand on a couple of occasions in the late 90’s whilst out with friends. Hendo exudes being a responsible adult, from what I can see at a distance. Gerrard didn’t from, as I say, first hand (though limited) observation.

You don’t have to be the best footballer to be a great captain of a side, I can only think that Souness was both (Hansen is on record as saying the others would run through walls for Souness, he was that respected), personally I see Henderson as a Mike Brearley type captain (if you’re familiar with cricket you’ll know who he was), though not the greatest in his sporting field, he was fundamentally a great leader on the pitch and understood the game better than most, that’s where I see Henderson. And the fact he was captain when we became of England agaib puts him in that category of being a great at the club.

14 Feb 2022 17:08:38
That goal against west ham to win the cup. Has hendo got any such moments lol. Gerrard carried a team of Baros and koncheskey for a decade.
Steven Gerrard was a gem. Could score all type of goals. That header against Milan at Istanbul.

{Ed025's Note - and he won personality of the year, and got an award for continually smiling i believe.. :)

24.) 14 Feb 2022
14 Feb 2022 17:10:49
VVVV
if Gerrard had Klopp near the touch line, Salah in the right, Mane on the left and Bobby upfront he would actually win the World Cup. Other than 08/ 09 he never had a proper team and his managers 😂 were Roy and Brendan.

25.) 15 Feb 2022
15 Feb 2022 04:38:03
@Transition with Klopp as coach and a midfield of Masch, Gerrard and Alonso and a front three of Salah, Firmino and Mane up front I would have flown back home from Australia to watch them live. Chuck in VVD and Hyppia at the back and I’d have paid double - now Sami was a natural leader if ever there was one.

{Ed0666's Note - Sami was a bit quiet for my liking. He needs to be more like my wife…Vocal

As for my opinion, everything Barry said and then some.

15 Feb 2022 14:32:39
Gerrard was indeed a gem, could score all types of goals yes but he hasn't done as much as Hendo has. Enough said, different managers, different times of course but that's just how it is lol it goes on who brings home the bacon. The happy crack is below Hendo in terms of captaincy.

Barry, I mean Larry, is wrong.
Henderson is a role model not a roll model.
