Ed's, do you think that Gomez's forthcoming renewal is more about protecting value than anything else? Some in the know names here have said that he does not suit our style, and so is unlikely to ever be more than a back up.

{Ed001's Note - in what way does he not suit our style? He is a ball-playing centre-back with pace, he is perfectly suited to our way of playing. He is also capable of playing all across the backline, which makes him a valuable utility player too.}

I still maintain you could make a strong argument that Joe Gomez is England's best centre back or at least in a back 2 or 3 for England.

Him an VVD I think was our best ever CB pairing in premier league statistically. This was not all VVD Joe was phenomenal at that time. And I know the injuries and there could be questions on where he's at now because he's barely played in 2 years almost. But when he has I definitely don't think he's lost pace which would be a main concern from those injuries. All in all has looked quite good as well maybe just needing more minutes which we couldn't really afford him last year fighting on all fronts with 3cbs who were all performing week in week out and not worth gambling getting Joe minutes. I think he'll play a lot more this year.

For me the season we where at our best defensively was when Gomez and VVD played together. Then injuries upset the partnership. Next season see more minutes for Konate and Gomez next to VVD and that suits us as we think about the future as well as the present.

I think Gomez has proven numerous times that he is suited to our style of play. He was very much part of the starting 11 in the years we won the league and CL.

Unfortunately he’s had a couple of very serious injuries and it’s taken him time to get back. But at 25 years of age he’s still got plenty of football in his legs.

Klopp seems to have lots of faith in Matip but we all know his injury record and there’s more chance of him breaking down this season than there is him going injury free so Joe will def get his chance in there and it’ll be up to him to impress.

I’d be gutted if we sold Gomez.

What "in the know names" would they be then?

For me a top club needs to have 3 top class CB's with efficient cover at a lower level if needed to keep all players happy and give enough minutes. For me those top class CB's are VVS, Konate and Gomez. matip is good but will want to start and is on high wages. Personally I would be starting VVD, rotating Konate and Gomez as appropriate (The former against opponents with quicker attackers and the latter against more physical opponents), selling Matip and keeping Phillips as suitable and proven cover, albeit at a lower level.

Ed0001 out of all are options at cb I would go Gomez and VVD over all the other options when everybody is fit. There record together was amazing goals conceded to games ratio must be right up there apart from that freak Villa game but an awful lot of that was down to Alisson not playing.

{Ed001's Note - they would be my preferred choice as well. They work really well together.}

Gomez came back from a really bad injury last year and not everyone is like VVD who hardly took any time to get back to his best. I feel Gomez will do well this year and long term he will be the best possible replacement for Matip.

Neil Jones reporting after the Gomez contacts tied up LFC’s next priority is getting Jota and Naby onto new contracts.

Gonna be emotional on here for some if that day happens.

ed001 I don't know so only what I have read but I did see after Gomez got injured and what I see it said his injury was worse than VVD. I cannot remember any other players with a patella tendon rupture on its own I think Ox did them all in his knee. lucky to have a 3 back I would love Ox to get back to his pre knee injury form ed.

Folks who claim Gomez isn't suited to our style have either had their judgement altered by transfer fever or simply don't have a clue.
For all the noise about Villa etc making bids, he was never going anywhere.
Chuffed to bits with this news.

OP, those who said Gomez does not suit our style of play must have either slept thru or were living under a rock btw 18/ 19 and 19/ 20 seasons where he was absolutely immaculate esp at the World Club Cup where he outplayed VVD comfortably in both games.

Gomez were it not for his injuries, is levels above the tripe that the likes if Maguire, Stones, White, Guehi etc. That England have been serving up of Kate. But again if you gave the Vest a fit Gomez, he wouldn’t know what to do with him, like he has no clue what to do with Trent.

I don’t think I’ve seen one person say Gomez doesn’t suit our style. I’ve seen people say he isn’t good enough, which is total rubbish but never that he doesn’t suit our style. Why do people just make stuff up?

All the fringe squad players will get more game time next year, because of five subs new rules, and the sheer number of games, including internationals, that's one good thing of Mane going we now have only Salah going for African Cup games.

Like everyone else including Jurgen i hope, one top class midfielder is required ASAP, then were good to go.

20.) 07 Jul 2022
07 Jul 2022 22:45:51
I think the 5 sub rule only comes into effect for us if we are cruising. If we are leading by a goal and the opposition haven’t shut up shop then don’t except Klopp to bring on 5 squad players to bring off 5 starters.

After all how often does Klopp ever use the 3 subs?

We might see more players getting the 89th min appearance now like Mino and Origi did.

We won't see an African Cup of Nations in 2023 (for obvious reasons) it's been postponed to January 2024.
