New signings are always fun, but I don't understand why people think the late arrival of a midfielder makes sense? Pre-season and months of acclimatisation with Klopp are key, and our midfield took us close to a quadruple last season. One bad game at Fulham, doesn't make them hopeless. I actually felt movement of our first half front 3 didn't help, and Fabinho often takes a few games to get into his stride after a break. I also think Keita will benefit hugely from Nunez.

I think we should sign Frankie De Jong. No idea if he fits our system or style of play but how much fun would it be after UTD have chased him for 13 weeks.

How will naby benefit? Has nunez some kind of miracle cure?

One of Keita's biggest strengths at Leipzig was his ability to break the lines behind an out and out striker. Then either link with them or slide a pass in behind. In his whole career at Liverpool he's never once played with a natural striker of any real calibre. Sturridge was finished and Origi was average.

It might sound strange, but it is certainly not outrageous to suggest playing with Nunez could benefit Keita. I still want Keita sold to clarify, just defending the OP's perfectly acceptable opinion from an obtuse response.

I'd imagine the OP is envisioning Nunez making runs in behind that Keita, as a progressive midfield player, could find.

Not sure myself as that on occasions when Naby actually does play well enough that you can tell what he's good at, his primary strengths appear to be his pressures in the final third and dribbling rather than his passing.

Not sure if you were joking JK23 but De Jong would be the perfect signing for us. Carries the ball from the back which we are truly lacking but probably over our budget even if we could find buyers for the ox and Naby.

We lost the title to City and CL to Madrid. Look at their midfielders Rodri Casemiro KDB Modric Bernardo Kroos Gundogan Tchouameni Foden Camavinga. Thiago is the only one we have who would get regular games for them and he’s too unreliable. At the back and up front we’ve got as good a set of players as anyone but our midfield is miles away from the other top sides.

Fabinho would get game time for me but its there depth in midfield that makes them great they make changes in midfield and strengthen upto the young lads to repay klopps faith and shut us all up.

Rodi is clearly ahead of Fabs. The way KDB ran all over him when we played City away was a worrying site.

{Ed001's Note - I disagree, Rodri always has another man alongside him because he is not as good, whereas Klopp can afford to risk one deep because of how good Fabinho is. Putting De Bruyne as the example is ridiculous, Rodri never faces anyone as good as him as there is no one else as good as him. I guarantee Rodri is run all over when he faces him in training. Rodri is good, probably about the same level as Fabinho overall, but there is no way he is clearly ahead - it is nonsense to suggest anything like that, but you always are more down on Liverpool players than opposition ones. Maybe because you look for weaknesses and see more of them than opposing players to spot the problems or maybe it is just your mindset, I have no idea, but it is definitely there.}

Some fair points. I mainly pick out the negatives because by nature this is a red tinted site. We can’t keep saying we have the best of everything and then consistently keep losing the 2 horse race. Fabs I feel is a touch overrated on here. IMO what happened last season was he played 3 games in 6 days for Brazil and was never quite the same last season.
Also Klopp ran him into the ground last season and didn’t rotate him and others enough. Fabs when fresh is top class but in the biggest he doesn’t do enough. But I am still raw from Saturday and Fabs dire performance is still grating on me.

{Ed001's Note - having the best individuals doesn't make you the best team and it doesn't win you a league when you have to play so many games. Having the best squad will win the league more often than not, rather than the best team and that is by far and away City. There is nothing we can do to compete on that front, so we can't expect to win, it should be seen as a great feat when we do so.}

Spot on, Ed. People seem to think that cos we are competing with City for titles and trophies, we are suddenly at the same level as them in spite of the HUGE advantages they have over us. City are the best team in the league and have been for about 12 years now due to the over 2 billion pounds spent on that team since the sheikhs pitched up. Shoot, Pep alone has spent 1.3 billion on this team alone yet he and Klopp started their first full seasons at the very same time in the summer of 2016.

The fact that NOBODY can compete with this City team BUT Liverpool despite it's disadvantages is stunning to me every time we do it and the fact that rival fans whose clubs can't hack it, are psuedo City fans cos they'd rather see us lose than their team actually compete with City, just shows how brilliant we are as a team. As someone told a City fan on a podcast, "Don't get it twisted. City isn't competing with Liverpool. Liverpool are competing with City". Many on here would be wise to know the difference.

I think our squad is deeper than City. If you look at Their bench last season there were plenty of kids. Our second keeper, 4th cb, 5th forward I take over theirs. Even in midfield Curtis is 8th choice, which is more than good enough. It’s the performance of our so called world class players in the biggest games that is the issue for me. Against City and Chelsea in the pl very few played well.
It’s going to be an amazing ride again. The 5 sub rule should help us massively so we should be confident.

I think we have players in the squad and certainly other squads that can give a steady 6-7 week in week out.

And then there's players who can be 8-9 for weeks or months and then hit a bad patch (by their standards) and not be as World class ie Salah and KDB (to name 2)

And then you have Fab who will play 15-20 games with a rating of 8 and then out of nowhere when he has a bad game he has a very bad game. There's like no in between for him. Either he's excellent or having a stinker (could say similar for Thiago maybe) .

This isn't a dig at Fab because the great thing about him is the bad games are few and far between and his good games far outweigh his bad.

One thing though is i think if he is having a bad game then its better just to bring him off than him try and play himself into form as Klopp did on Sat.

Our midfield didn’t really get us that close to a quadruple in reality. Couldn’t lay a glove on Madrid when it mattered and wasn’t good enough to overhaul City over 38 games, those are cold hard facts. The same group will probably fall short again for the same reasons it fell short last time. I also can’t see that Nunez will help get the best out of Keita, some players aren’t up to the Premier League and Keita is one of those players regrettably.

Einstein once said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, I’m inclined to agree with that in respect of our midfield.

I agree with you on Fabs JK. Maybe Klopp has to do better in keeping him fresh. IMO the 5 subs will give us an advantage over City.

{Ed025's Note - have you seen city’s bench mark? They can bring on the likes of mahrez and bernado mate where you are bringing on Elliot and the Fulham kid..

Ed001 any chance of doing a City / Liverpool squad comparison or even just a thread.

Both squads are quality for me and i think unfortunately for us we just ran out of steam last season in the Spurs and Real game.

As great as it was to win the 2 domestic cups i honestly believe we would have won the League and CL if we had not gone as far in the domestic cups. Both finals went to extra time and the Semi's and Quarters resulted in a fixture congestion for us which meant we ran out of steam in 2 games where we needed to find that extra gear.

The last 10 games we didn't need to get out of 2nd to 3rd gear to win them but the Spurs, Real and even Chelsea FA Cup game we needed to find that world class final gear to get over the line but we just didn't have it in our locker.

I think the last time we hit that gear was City in the semi and that game probably drained the tanks.

{Ed001's Note - I will try and put something together either tonight or tomorrow mate.}

Ed025 the Fulham kid? Is he any relation to Billy the Kid?

{Ed025's Note - I just can’t remember his name JK. Old age mate..

18.) 09 Aug 2022

Ed25, City's has ONLY 5 midfielders (Rodri, Phillips, Silva, Gundogan and KDB) with Silva prolly on his way to Barcelona which leaves them with 4 if they don't sign anyone. They have ONLY one rB and one LB (who is actually a RB) and NO natural LB's while we have 5 FB's overall at our club. Oh and Jota would have come on vs Fulham had he been fit, not Carvalho.

And at least, we can bring on our kids like Elliott who is brilliant (and helped change the game vs Fulham) as well as Carvalho. What kids can City bring on? I'll wait.

{Ed025's Note - jury still out on Elliot oli and cavalho for that matter. I like the look of them though but they have proved nothing yet mate..

Ed025, hello mate hope your keeping well. I agree that City have 3 or 4 to bring on who are class. If they keep nearly everyone fit they will be very very difficult to stop. I do think our squad is deeper. We brought Nunez off the bench and Jota will be back in a few weeks.
I am still hanging my hat on Silva going to Barca.

{Ed025's Note - I have to say mark that Jota should never start a game mate. Bring him on in the desperation stakes but I think he’s awful mate..

I think if fit Jota would have started against Fulham not come on. Nothing against Bobby but his starting days for me are behind Jota and Nunez.

We’re running a risk of letting sentiment get in the way of truth with regard to Bobby. I hope Bobby proves me wrong but I wouldn’t put money on it.
