Maybe a blessing in disguise, I'd tend to agree with ed1 that gomez is vvd best partner. And I mean that with all due respect to matip who I like as a player.

I tend to agree with Ed001’s assessment on Gomez. I think he can lack assertiveness at times but i just don’t feel as nervous with him at the back as i do with Matip. I think him and van Dijk bring out the best in eachother, whereas Matip and van Dijk can occasionally lull eachother into a lackadaisical state of mind. I think his pace is far more suited to our high line than Matip, I can only hope the injury hasn’t taken it from him.

@Thunderbird, correct - one of our CBS gets injured (Konate) and we replace from within the squad (Matip) . Matip gets injured and we replace from within the squad with Gomez. If Gomez or Van Dijk pick up an injury we have Phillips and / or Van den Berg. If they get injured we have Quansah or even Chambers who has played CB. If they get injured at a push we have Fabs. As you said Hailstones was correct ?.

So Gomez hasn’t played CB in PL for us since Nov 2020 but should start ahead of the CB who was there last season when we nearly won 4 trophies. The midfield can’t be questioned because we nearly won all 4 with them but Matip can? Wow, if you are Jota, Matip or Keita then on this site your name is dirt, unreal.

There is so much praise for our transfer strategy but I think one thing we do incredibly poorly is buying players with a known history of injury problems. Thiago, Konate and Ox all had well-documented injury histories and we still bought them. Ox has been a complete waste of money and Thiago has been a pointless signing. He was 29 when we bought him so we won't have him for very long. If he is going to keep getting injured, what's the point? We would have been better off signing a younger midfielder who will be with us for longer and is more readily available.

Faith I’m 100% with you there and in all honesty I have no belief we will buy a player in this window and I don’t think I’ve mentioned once that we will but I have no problems with people posting about transfers and players as to be honest I find it interesting to then see Ed’s and posters opinions on such player.

In fairness to those posters though it’s not like they’ve only just starting saying we need a midfielder because of injury they’ve been very vocal about it since the start of the window.

Posters in Jan were getting on their high horses about other posters saying we didn’t need a transfer and then with a few days to go we brought in Diaz. And the posters who were so against signing anyone now have him as their poster boy.

Our opinions have no outcome on transfers but we lost a league title 2 seasons ago to an injury crisis and with 4 of our 8 midfielders currently out 1 game into the season and all of them having missed game time (some significant) over the last few seasons I can understand why some are twitchy.

It’ll be interesting to see how many posters are the same ones who think Jones, Ox and Naby are not good enough to be with us and Milner is too old are the same posters who then think we have enough midfielders because they hear we have 8.

All in all it’s an opinions game and my original point stands of why posters get so triggered on “not a transfer page” but a fans “opinion page”.

JK, Diaz was bought early because if we didn’t he was going to Spurs. I assume that Mane was due to leave this summer and Diaz was the target to replace him. If Mane had gone before we bought Diaz then more people would have said we needed a replacement.

Klopp obviously knows the size of the squad he wants to compete and works to it. From the outside looking in, as Babbity mentioned above, I don’t quite get why we seem to go for players with poor injury records. I get taking a risk on one or 2, such as Ox and Thiago, due to the size of the squad and what they can bring when fit and in form, but at the moment we do seem to have a lot of players who miss a fair few games every season.

I guess we’ll find out if it’s enough at the end of the season. If we’re competing on 2 to 3 fronts again, as usual, I’d argue it is.

Footyfan but the Diaz signing worked. He gave us more strength in depth rather than come in after Mane left. Looking towards next summer we might have to replace Milner, Ox, Naby and Thiago and a Hendo will be 3 years past that dreaded 30.

I'm firmly in the camp that if Klopp and company give us a shiny new toy then great. If they decide for whatever reason to go with what we have then that's their decision and there's nothing I can do about it. Saying that if people want to vent their spleen over it then that's their right, Eds won't let any old rubbish through, and if I don't like it then I scroll on by.
