Can someone please explain to me why people take pre season games so seriously? it's about fitness and nothing more. A kick about, who cares if we lost EVERY pre season game? I don't lol, it is what it is, getting the lads fit for the new season and seeing what the youngsters can offer. It's really quite simple but many look into it far too much.

Agree8 Disagree0

I get your thoughts Salah and tbh the results don’t really matter although having said that it’s better to win the games than loose. I get it’s about fitness and seeing what the youngsters can do but on the evidence over last 4 games the players who have come in look a bit short of match sharpness and some of the youngsters are not ready. Winning games keeps the momentum going into other games and a good buzz in the dressing room. We play the League Champions a week today for a trophy, granted not a massive trophy to some but again one I want us to win.

28 Jul 2019 19:01:08
Fair enough but you should still be able to pass the ball 5 yards to a red shirt. People paid good money to watch that today and many of our players were completley sh1t. A few shots would of been nice for the crowd don't you think?

As you have never even been to a game, you never take the fans view into account.

28 Jul 2019 18:55:45
I would say its fairly important, this late into the preseason, we have something like 200 games to play next season, with the club world cup, the 2 cups and champions league.
We are going to have to rely on the bench and back up players, so this is probably the only chance they'll get when the season starts in like a week!

28 Jul 2019 18:55:56
You get into a habit of losing the same as you get into a habit of winning.

28 Jul 2019 18:57:54
It's also about getting your touch right, getting basic tactics in order. A pre season result is unimportant, but a shocking performance on all fronts 2 weeks away from the start of the season is something to be a little concerned about.

28 Jul 2019 19:04:50
Salah, I think most are not concerned necessarily with the results, it's the way we are conceding goals. the defense looks pourous. Just my opinion though. Overall, I'm not really concerned, but that may be what some are looking at. I'm not really concerned with the lack of production up front. Klopp is trying out a lot of youngsters and I think they've done pretty well overall. The goals weren't there, but they created opportunities and with more game time, they will produce. Mignolet was, well Mignolet so I do agree that an upgrade may be worth looking at for a backup to Alisson. I'm not with the group of fans who think we need a "creative" midfielder. I like our midfield overall. I do think we need some help in the back though. Just my point of view for what it's worth.

28 Jul 2019 19:10:54
Personally I think results don’t matter in pre season but performances do. Results only matter to suite people’s arguments. If we had beaten Napoli today then it would have mattered. Because we didn’t the result doesn’t.

28 Jul 2019 19:40:15
I have seen teams go unbeaten in pre season in the past, then lose 4 or 5 in a row when the league starts. We have also witnessed some players being outstanding in pre season then struggling for Liverpool, Grujic did well recently but it all counted for nothing.

Just see the difference when we play Norwich and the result matters. I am not interested in the pointless match next week either.

28 Jul 2019 19:41:10
My main point is that you should tend to set your team up how you want to start your season, and our front three (admittedly our main three aren't available) should not be playing together. We can't start the Norwich game with Gini, Origi and Ox up front. It simply doesn't work.

Lyon is the last chance that Klopp has to tinker his starting front three until the big guns return. I'm hoping he starts with Origi, Brewster and Wilson. And that it works, because we need it until Mane, Firmino and Salah return.

I'm not arsed about the result, but the performance from the front three was woeful, and shows no sign of ever really working.

28 Jul 2019 19:44:00
Salah I didn't know what you meant until I scrolled down enough to see all the posters freaking out. Lol
Of course these results matter not, it's fluidity and sharpness we're looking for and if anything these games make us aware of whatever issues might be lacking within the team/ squad. And I don't mean signings, I mean things to work on in training and get sorted as a group.
If anything, I would argue that it's actually kinda better to get beaten (by good teams) in these preseason games as preparation for the real thing.

28 Jul 2019 19:46:30
I’ve seen no one who can stand in for any of our front 3 preseason friendly or not! Mingo might be rusty but he’s still dirt!

28 Jul 2019 19:20:44
Mark since when have I never been to a game? what are you talking nonsense for again? I thought you'd of learnt your lesson the many times you've failed in the past, if you're going to come at me mate atleast state facts. My god, please continue mate, you continuously make yourself look stupid, my 12 year old speaks more sense. Scooby doo is less confused than you.

Fair points by the rest of you.

28 Jul 2019 19:21:23
"200 games" in the up coming season. That's a bit of an over reaction.

28 Jul 2019 19:32:12
Id rather not start the season losing 4+ 0 to Man city. Unless we improve 100% in one week, that is what we're in for. Results haven't mattered but we've been easily picked through so far. I'll say again, only one week till we play City.

28 Jul 2019 19:52:41
Whatever the result is, it would not have mattered as that is not the goal of preseason games. Even performances. It does not matter to a certain extent cos each manager puts things into the preparation for such games in order to see what they want to see based on the tactics and systems that they could like to see implemented in real game situations. Now, Klopp is trying diff. things and diff. combos. in all three phases of the team as in defence, midfield attack and if Klopp did not see what he wanted to see today then, the result doesn't matter. The issues are still there.

Also, do people even realize that you can play badly in a preseason game and still win? I haven seen that many, many times and had that happened today, I would not have been impressed cos I know the result is not what anyone who knows a thing about football would be looking at.

Personally, I'm not bothered about the game and the result cos I'm sure Klopp and his staff and players have gathered the info they need for the next game. As for the Community Shield, it is nothing but another glorified preseason friendly. Nothing more, Nothing less. Regardless of who wins, it won't mean a damn thing going forward for either team. No markers will be laid. Nothing BUT I'm sure people will be ready with their well-sharpened knives should we Heaven's forbid, we lose a glorified preseason game.

28 Jul 2019 20:03:37
I suppose after losing only one league game last season and our defence being so strong, it’s all rather a shock to see so many goals being conceded in defeats.
There’s an awful lot of games to come so I suppose it’s better to start slowly.
I still think that there’s room for a top player to come in though, we’re not that good yet.

28 Jul 2019 20:11:28
Just a bit of a joke Everest! glad you got it.

28 Jul 2019 20:20:25
Only thing you can draw from these games is we are heavily reliant on our front three who wouldn't be! ) and Alisson in net. If we are ever in a position where we are without the front three I'd panic! First game we can draw any conclusion from is Norwich. Keep the faith boys these are our champions of Europe after all.

28 Jul 2019 20:32:23
1 poster said that mate and he failed dramatically so bringing that up is irrelevant lol so you really want me to post the news article? When I get home ill be happy to. Just let me know, I'm happy to make you look stupid for how many times now? Yeah, I've forgot too.

I don't always agree with Eds opinion at all mate, he knows his stuff but we've not always agreed. Tell me one time please, just one time, that I've had an opinion and Ed1 has had one so i've then changed mine? I await for your reply but you're one of them, can't ever back yourself up mate.

I didn't post the above because of what Ed has said, I have always said the same about pre season games, if you read posts you'd know this.

Now, stop spouting nonsense and get facts right before you continue because you're making your self look silly. One day you young ones might learn to engage brain before mouthing off. Still didn't answer my question did you? Laughable.

28 Jul 2019 20:23:24
I wish people wouldn’t say that the Community Shield doesn’t matter though.
Back in the day I can barely remember us losing one.

{Ed025's Note - i remember keegan and bremner fighting in one juicer which made it interesting, it means very little nowadays but i suppose if your that desperate for a trophy you should go all out to win it mate.. :)

28 Jul 2019 20:50:30
i don't understand the shots at one another. Salah started a legitimate post. Why take a shot? I get that this is a banter site, but the vitriol is of no value at all. All opinion should be respected, but the cruelty at some of the responses are very sad. No wonder some of the Eds get fed up at times.

28 Jul 2019 20:49:27
Winning gives confidence to players and supporters, Losing gives doubt/ self doubt to players and supporters. All the players would of wanted to win these games so will probably be feeling down about the results. Then there's the players that wanted to impress that will feel that they haven't and missed a chance.

28 Jul 2019 21:25:52
ashy77 so we should have planned our pre-season games against sub-standard teams like Gilligham, Yeovil, Forest Green and Man Utd?

Klopp has already stated that he planned for these games to be tough for a reason.

28 Jul 2019 21:26:42
I mean we've had some excellent preseasons over the years and our PL count is still zero, winning preseason wins you nothing.

28 Jul 2019 21:50:13
Charity Shield might be a damp squid trophy but it’s a day out at Wembley for our supporters! We’ve not exactly been blessed in that dept recently.

28 Jul 2019 22:41:09
when we win in pre-season - ooooh we are looking good

when we lose - it's only pre-season

the reality is a bit of both, but I would focus more on the performances rather than the results. We look a step behind where we could be performance wise at this stage but there isn't too much we can do about that now really.

28 Jul 2019 22:58:34
The one thing to remember is sometimes you can learn more from your mistakes, players won't be afforded by klopp to be complacent when season starts. Also remember allison salah firmino return tomorrow. Our likely front 3 against Norwich will be salah firmino and origi. Fully fit defence, ox and wiji will be options for midfield instead of playing as forwards. We are overreacting with worry. People fearing city next sunday who have aguero Jesus ederson fernandinho otamendi mahrez also just returning. Let's not panic, take the positives. Brewster and origi gaining confidence, larrouci looking bright, AOC and Gomez getting minutes under their belt. Shaq and keita back training, no major players injured aside from clyne. Let's be optimistic guys.

{Ed0333's Note - I love this post Har, some much needed perspective on this site which seems to be lacking recently. Yes everyone wants new shiny signings me included but we have a girthy squad and need to sell before we buy. Also we have renewed lots of contracts for first team players which is a super expensive cost. Furthermore some like Lalana is on £100k plus a week and plays very little do you think it’s feasible to sign players on high wages for them not to play? This ain’t Man City people. Maybe it’s time for the kids to stake their claim. Brewster & Larouci take a bow?

29 Jul 2019 03:11:19
Yeah agree completely ed. Lallana has not been needed for 2 seasons now, with ox back he's even more surplus so he wouldn't even need to be replaced if sold. Brewster and larrouci/ Lewis would for sure be smart options. Used instead of sturridge and Moreno they can only be an improvement and also much less in wages that sturridge and Moreno had. The likes of lallana and clyne could be moved on next to save on paying big wages for players who are not needed. Sturridge lallana clyne Moreno probably costing 350-400k a week for last 4 or 5 years. Why not use youngsters as alternatives for those 4 players who haven't even been needed for last 2 seasons.
