Good morning Ed001, and everyone. The best of Matip is better than the best of Gomez? Agree or disagree? It's a toss-up for me, but I finally went with Matip, just barely. Matip's height, and heading, over Gomez's speed. And I do like Matip's threaded passing into the front (even though it doesn't work out always) . (I know not many will agree 🤷‍♂️) .

{Ed001's Note - disagree, Gomez is good in the air too and has as good a range of passing. It is very, very close though.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Good debate question ArAy. Matip was playing unbelievably well up until his injury and so was Joe last season up until his injury. Joe has been brilliant the last few games and long may that continue. I think the key factor for both is they need a run of games to hit top gear, but Matip will have to bide his time like Joe did when he comes back as there is no way Joe will be dropping out of the starting 11 anytime soon with the way he is performing. Best thing for me though is what a great dilemma this gives Klopp.

Matip is also 6 years older and more experienced than Joe. At 22, you’d have to argue we haven’t even seen close to the best of Joe which is a scary thought. They’re so close in ability but so far apart in age, it’s Gomez all day for me.

{Ed025's Note - both average for me shaq, it all revolves around VVD who is pivotal to the whole defensive set up, you could put a 6ft piece of timber in place of either of them and they would still be difficult to breach mate.. :)

It's a real difficult one that, ra. I think I'd choose Gomez purely because he's a lot younger and he's already at a similar level, he has so much time to improve as well, we could possibly have 2 of the best CB's in the world with VVD and Gomez imo.

Matip though, fair play, when he first came it just wasn't working for him but he's stepped right up. Quality player.

It's useless but I wonder how good Joe would be now if he hadn't had all those long term injuries? I think the clean sheets we are getting now Joe is in the team may be a coincidence but for me I think he should play when fit. Him and Virgil could form a great partnership for years to come. Hoever impresses me and I hope he will be ready to be in the mix in a few seasons when big virg is getting on.

Ed25, isn't that the point of a CB Partnership? For one to compliment the other and vice-versa? Sure, VVD is amazing and can do tonne of stuff BUT so was to a lesser degree, John Terry who brought the best out of a pretty poor Gary Cahill. Even the same John Terry played his best football next to the brilliant Ricardo Carvalho who went on to play very well at Madrid and brought the best out of Sergio Ramos for a while there.

IMO, A CB is only as good as the system he plays in and the partner he has so for me, Gomez and Matip (and Lovren, btw) are very good CB's with very good ability already cos if they weren't, VVD would not be able to compliment them and bring their ability out of them. VVD can't bring out of you, what you don't have. That's how that works, mate.

{Ed025's Note - im not sure thats actually correct RM, before VVD appeared on the scene liverpools defence was basically a shambles, lovren imo is poor and lots of people on here wanted rid of matip because he was so slow and his decision making was less than acceptable, the improvement has been down to 2 men...klopp and VVD, you now have the best defence in the country mate and thats down to virgil and in spite of who plays alongside him...just my view of course..

04 Jan 2020 09:23:33
You crack me there Ed025😂😂😂.

04 Jan 2020 10:26:32
DVD is class Ed025,but to take away how well both Matip and Gomez have played over the last year by saying it's all down to VVD is just a lazy, hugely idiotic opinion. No offence though pal😉.

{Ed025's Note - DVD could break all the records JH :), look at the facts mate, lovren and matip performed like laurel and hardy before virgil came, he has turned them into better than average players imo..

04 Jan 2020 12:14:55
DVD did indeed break all records (LP's), Ed025, LOL. (Genius, by the way) .

If Lovren and Matip performed like Laurel and Hardy, I'd be curious to read your descriptions of the Everton defense. (Kindly make them them as "colorful" as you do for the LFC players and supporters) .

{Ed025's Note - ours are worse than yours ArAy, words cannon express how bad keane is mate..

04 Jan 2020 12:35:39
And Gomez? was a kid when Vvd joined. surely he can't be put into the category of "crap before Virgil". I understand your point to a degree but when Gomez makes one of his perfectly timed challenges or outpaced a Premier league forward easily should he jog over to Virgil and say "thanks for that mate"? .

{Ed025's Note - yes he should jadon, what you have to remember is that gomez is to VVD what andrew ridgely was to george michael mate.. :)

04 Jan 2020 13:34:25
Gomez and VVD are pur best center half partner ship think start of last season clean sheets in the league where with them and then again last 5 league matches

Gomez didn't always have good games for lfc but in my opinion that's because he isn't a right full and should not be played there

William's Hoever or sign someone good enough to cover right full and leave the clean sheet centre half pairing alone.

04 Jan 2020 12:56:51
Sordid musical tastes, Ed0025, 😒.

04 Jan 2020 13:48:10
Think you're just being a Bad Boy there Ed025, just like you were Last Christmas. It's lovely to see our Young Guns like Gomez playing with so much Freedom, they take me to the Edge Of Heaven with each game. I've had enough of your Careless Whispers already so don't Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.

{Ed025's Note - good stuff johnny..

04 Jan 2020 15:15:03
Van Dijk and Alisson were the catalyst for Liverpools defensive improvements and Edo25 is right that Van Dijk improves anyone who plays alongside him. It used to be a back 3 of Mignolet, Matip and Lovren which meant no communication or leadership skills and a nervous, error prone defence.
Matip and Gomez are decent defenders who have improved by having top quality alongside them. I cannot think of 1 defender who would be a definite improvement, as there is a dearth of decent centre backs in world football.

{Ed025's Note - i will have all of that greenflash mate..

04 Jan 2020 15:50:38
just responding to get at Ed025 a little.
i'm glad that Gomez is at least comparable to 6th timber that won't drag VVD down
cause i'm actually of the opinion that if VVD had to pair with any of Everton's defenders, he would immediately drop to the level below Lovern and i'm not even trying to be mean. at least not yet

but glad that you finally got a decent coach who ensure PL survival, just hope you won't be leading games at 3-0 by half time, otherwise we all know what may happen =D.

{Ed025's Note - VVD would even make keane look good next to him sg (slight exaggeration), gomez and matip would be the new mina and keane in our side because they are both mediocre and lovren would not get in our U23 side mate, your 2 full backs are good though i must say..

04 Jan 2020 18:06:29
Gomez for me because of his recovery pace. He is rapid and perfect for a high line.

04 Jan 2020 19:19:38
Ed25, you are making my point for me. Before VVD, we had Lovs and Matip indeed and they did not play well as a partnership cos both lacked communication, concentraton, leadership skills and could not marshal a defence. Did they have pother qualities? Of course cos if they did not, they would not have been putting in the performances they have been doing WITH VVD next to them and would have been sold already.

Therefore, they lacked those qualities and Klopp saw that so what did he do? He went to get a guy in VVD who HAD these qualities so now playing next to either Lovs, Matip or Gomez, they don't have to worry about being a leader or marshalling the defence. VVD will take care of all that and cover for them while they focus on what they are actually good at which is defending on the front foot, marshalling the opposing attackers and suffocating the opposition. As for Lovs, the guy shut down CR7 in a CL final. If you have no ability and are poor as you say Lovs is, you simply can't do that. It's that simple. Just my opinion.

04 Jan 2020 21:50:00
Johnny, you forgot to mention "I want your sex". 😂.

{Ed025's Note - hey...this is not a dating site ArAy.. :)

04 Jan 2020 22:46:25
Red Meister, I think the truth is somewhere between you and Ed025s' opinions. Van Dijk and Alisson are world class, so Matip, Gomez and Lovren will feel more assured knowing the calibre of defensive partners they have next to them.
Lets be honest, none of us were ever confident on corners, crosses and set pieces with Mignolet in goal and our 2 defenders nervously playing in front of him, in fact we were garbage. Stick 2 world class leaders at the back and its job done.

04 Jan 2020 23:49:18
If matip and gomez are average what does that make keane and mina? There wouldn’t be a word for it. How’s that boddingtons Ed?

{Ed025's Note - ours are definitely worse lerchy but there is a word for it...honesty, we dont butter up our players and label them as "world class" mate...especially if they just being dragged along by a player who is, but i do refute the bitter tag..i tell it like it is with maybe just a hint of blue bias my friend..
