Who's the better captain Stevie or Hendo? got to go for Hendo.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Feb 2020 06:58:33
Why is Hendo the better captain?

10 Feb 2020 07:05:08
2 very different captains for me.

Hendo is a leader through his work ethic and the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch.

Stevie was amazing in that he could single handedly drag us through a game with moments of brilliance on big occasions.

No need to compare, just enjoy both.

10 Feb 2020 07:23:23
Uncomparable. Both class.

10 Feb 2020 08:16:28
Both class but hendo for me, selfless .

10 Feb 2020 08:48:32
Worlds apart.

10 Feb 2020 08:49:52
Better player: Gerrard, obviously. Better captain: Henderson. Captain is all about team first. Gerrard dragged the team forward and everyone followed. Henderson pushes the team forward. Both are/ were leaders, but two different types of leadership.

10 Feb 2020 09:43:13
Gerrard was a great leader on the pitch because of how good he was and his never stop attitude. However he was helped in the dressing room by Carra. I feel like Hendo does a good job on and off the pitch.

Really hard to compare them though. Different teams, different managers to work with.

10 Feb 2020 09:51:05
Love Hendo. But Steve's my hero. Has to be him.

10 Feb 2020 14:12:59
18 months ago I would have said Gerrard but Hendo has grown into a great captain. He does a better job off the pitch and when he lifts the pl title it has to be Henderson.

10 Feb 2020 14:22:39
I love Henderson, but come on. Gerrard carried this club for years and it's just a pity he never got to play in a team as good as this one. Gerrard was just on a different stratosphere to Hendo.

10 Feb 2020 15:26:53
The question was who is the best captain, the question was clear. You don't see Henderson on the front pages, or hearing about him being a bully etc. Plus Gerrard who was a great player for us but he had a couple of chances to win the pl and he couldn't get us over the line.

Hendo will be the one holding the trophy and so for me he is the better captain.

10 Feb 2020 16:11:45
Henderson's a good player, and a good man and I'm happy he's finally being appreciated but being a good man shouldn't lift him to heights which he's not at. Whether you think Gerrards a bully or you think the fact he never won the league means he wasnt great for us there's no denying that Gerrard is in the top handful of people to ever play for this club. Hendo, for all his good traits would be lucky to be in the top 50.

10 Feb 2020 16:43:04
Again sorry to bang on but the question is WHO IS THE BEST CAPTAIN. Of course Gerrard was the better player but again that is not the question. I never said Gerrard wasn't a great player, in Liverpool's top handful of all time no argument. Henderson is some way off an all time 11 but Gerrard probably gets in.

Hendo though is becoming a great LFC captain and by the end of the season will without question become a better captain than Gerrard.

10 Feb 2020 16:58:00
Hendo has been brilliant, not because he is captain or because he has evolved into a world class player, but because he has quality players around him, and as a team they are getting the job done. But what makes a good captain anyway? If we are talking about someone who can drive the team then Stevie is the better captain. If we are talking about someone whose behaviour is exemplary both on and off the pitch, then Hendo. For me, a great captain is someone with both of these qualities. Virgil would make a great captain for example, but Hendo is doing a fine job. To be fair, you could probably give the armband to any of our lads and we would still be flying, purely because we have so much quality in the squad.

Red-Rum.

{Ed025's Note - hendo is a very good captain and has been outstanding this season red rum, but lets not tag him as world class mate, it makes you sound foolish and does jordan no favours either..

10 Feb 2020 16:58:31
Ok Mark, in my opinion it's not even in question. Gerrard is on another level, AS A CAPTAIN.

10 Feb 2020 17:25:43
Give your reasons as to why Gerrard is a better Captain.

Gerarrd was a bully to some younger players. Gerarrd put himself before the team on numerous occasions, he would empty midfield in search of personal rewards. Gerrard was done for fighting off the field more than once, he was involved with some gangsters at one stage. He liked to go out drinking around liverpool that sometimes got him into trouble. He got sent off a lot more than he should have. Gerrard never won a Premier League title.

Hendo doesn't drink, doesn't get into trouble, he is great with the kids, and he will lift the PL trophy. As you say its not even a question.

10 Feb 2020 19:49:55
I measure how good a captain is by how he inspires on the pitch, I support this club over 35 years and Gerrard is the biggest driving force and also just the best player I've ever seen play for us aswell. Hendo couldn't have put in that 2nd half performance in Istanbul, he couldn't have done what Gerrard done against West Ham in 06'. And that's just two instances of which there are hundreds. hattricks in Merseyside derbies, the man lifted this club on his shoulders for years. im sure Hendo is the better role model off the pitch, its just not what I find most important in a captain.

10 Feb 2020 20:04:05
Ok mark, would hendo of lifted the pl trophy in the same team gerrard was in if you swapped them? I would say he wouldn't, but gerrard probably would in this team as the team as a whole is better all round.

10 Feb 2020 20:13:06
Wow, I never thought a day would come when we'd be so bored that we're comparing Gerrard vs. Hendo! Really?

11 Feb 2020 03:01:27
I'm not going to pick one or the other as it's a question with way too many variables. Both have been great captains that's it. Henderson mightnt have led us to glory in Istanbul or single handedly won the fa cup in 06, or olympiacos game. Gerrard regularly hurt United and Everton our 2 biggest rivals and Gerrard would probably do just as good in captaincy this season as hendo is.

But to claim Gerrards personal life as a reason you don't think he was a good captain is rubbish. John Terry, Roy Keane, Tony Adams arguably 3 of the best "captains" in premier league era. One was often in trouble off the field and always on front page of newspapers, one was renowned for being harsh on youngsters and critical of teammates and one was an alcoholic who drank heavily but these are reasons you tarnish Gerrard in a debate about captain performance solely. Both are very different people and players but both have been unquestionably superb captains.

11 Feb 2020 08:58:29
What are you talking about Har. People need to read posts properly. Who said Gerrard was not a good captain? I am not sitting on the fence I said Hendo is the better captain because he has no weaknesses purely as a captain. He has grown into the role and taken it to a slightly higher level. His all round capaincy is a level above, look how he handled the Gomez, Sterling situation as an example, selfless.

If we are talking about performances, what about the semi final v Barca? Hendo played better in that game than Gerrard did in the 2005 final. We were lucky to beat Milan we weren't lucky to beat Barcelona and Hendo was the best player on the pitch. Who was the best player in the CWC Henderson.

11 Feb 2020 01:12:32
Ed, you misunderstood what I was saying mate. I was saying that Hendo has been brilliant not because he is world class *as people are saying* (because he is not) but because he is surrounded by quality. In other words, the players around him have made him appear better than he is. I should have reworded it.

{Ed025's Note - i dont disagree with that red rum, i just dont like the words "world class" being bandied about willy nilly, imo there are only 2 players at this time that come into that catagory...messi and ronaldo, because of their high performance levels over a prolonged period of time mate..

11 Feb 2020 16:08:48
Ed, my point was that Hendo is not world class; the players around him make him look better than he is. But he is doing a fine job as captain.

{Ed025's Note - he is doing an excellent job mate..

11 Feb 2020 23:27:51
Don't back track red rum. You were right mate, hendo has been world class this season and last. Wc isn't just playing pirlo like passes, or dribbling like ronaldo. Hendo is a complete midfielder. No one has been able to touch him this year. He is going to win pfa player of the year, going to lift the Premier league, having lifted the cwc and super cup and who knows, maybe ANOTHER European Cup. He's going to captain a very good England team in the euros. The lad is world class now. I won't be moved on this. Ed says its embarrassing but I'm starting to find the rebuttals annoying and just sounding like denial. I trust you have been watching him this year ed025. How isn't he world class? And hope I don't sound too rude mate, that's not my intention. He's just been so amazing. The driving force behind the best team on the planet. How can ge not be world class? Come on man.

{Ed025's Note - as i have said robbie he has been excellent for about a season and a half now, before that most of your supporters wanted him dropped because of his negativity of sideways and backwards passing, a "world class" tag comes with being consistantly good for a number of years at the highest level, at the moment this is an indian summer for the guy but who knows if it continues for another 8 or so seasons then he could well be mate..

12 Feb 2020 12:56:08
A fair point I suppose. But sideways passing isn't always negative. I see hendo keeping this level for another 2 or 3 years. If he does would you say he's world class?

12 Feb 2020 18:39:31
I wasn't back tracking Robbie mate. The whole point of my post was to say that Hendo has been brilliant but not because he is a "world class" player as people are saying - He isn't. Hendo has looked good because he has quality players around him. As I said in my first post, Virgil is a better captain because he drives the team and is genuinely world class. Hendo is doing a good job as captain if we are judging by his attitude both on and off the pitch, but if we are judging on ability then there are many players in the squad that would be before him. He has improved a lot recently but he is not world class.
