The team last night equalled Shankly's 1972 side for the unbeaten at home run.
That 1972 run led to the league championship in the following year, not surprisingly.
Amongst it was a slightly fortuitous win against Stoke City in October 1972. They had a good side at the time, with the great Gordon Banks in goal and he repelled everything that Liverpool threw at him.
Stoke took the lead on the counter and it wasn't until midway in the 2nd half when Banks was bizarrely penalised for taking too many steps that the Reds equalised with an Emlyn Hughes rocket free kick.
Wave after wave of attacks followed, the Kop in full voice. In the last minute a huge deflection off a speculative Ian Callaghan shot beat Banks for a dramatic win.
Last night sort of reminded me of that, the good fortune mixed with relentless pressure, and the crowd desperate for a goal.
Thankfully it wasn't Gordon Banks in goal yesterday!
PS that was his last game before the car crash that blinded him in one eye.
