ed001 I was at the game last night I thought we should have won the game and if Alisson was playing am sure we would have done. I thought Oblak made some great saves. but I thought after we took the lead we should have just calmed down a bit and hit them on the break rather than still going at it like we needed a goal. As for them I did like the look of Partey he reminded me of Wijnaldum very strong on the ball with great control.

{Ed001's Note - Partey and Oblak are very good players, it must be remembered Atleti are an extremely expensively assembled side with the highest paid manager in the game. It is no shame to lose to them. Especially not after a performance like that.}

yeah we played great ed on another night it would have been 5-0 at full time. Adrián as not looked great since he came back in but I do think there was no need to carry sending both full backs and every body else but I think we have a young squad and hopefully we will learn from this I think may be the occasion go to them and when we went into the lead they just wanted to go finish them off.
but we are going to get the one all reds have been waiting for. I can't believe that I was 15 the last time and growing up that's all I can remember And as Billy Shankly said this is are bread and butter Europe has been great for Liverpool but we want to win the league all the time.
YNWA.

{Ed001's Note - I just think it was one mistake that caused deflation, rather than the way we played. We could have had everyone back, but Adrian's miskick would still have caused a problem and then failing to get himself set added to it. It is just the way it is. I can remember Grobs having some shocking games too. In fact every player does at times, but a goalkeeper gets punished for his errors.}

Very proud of the lads last night upset at the result but a lot can be learned from that game
When we are at it from the off there are very few teams in world football over 90 minutes who can live with us
On players I really hope we can all see how important gini is to our team as well
Man of the match easily for me yesterday.

Absolutely no shame at all. We've made the final the last 2 seasons an won the damn thing less than 12 months ago. Football is funny, this is the best we've been in the last 3 seasons yet we got further in the previous 2 😅

Last time we suffered a big blow in the UCL we won it the following year so don't be too downbeat.

12 Mar 2020 16:35:54
I thought Partey was excellent last night. Very calm in tight spaces and always wanting the ball, great player.
Grino. We didn't get much chance to calm down after getting into the lead. I also agree with Ed that Adrian's howler knocked the stuffing out of us and said as much last night. It was like all that effort to get our noses in front then that happens!? Up to that point we had all the momentum.

12 Mar 2020 16:38:30
Partey was amazing over both legs. Real quality player. Or maybe he just raised his game to play us. Or is he more consistent? If so we should sign him.

I was just a little disappointed with the response to their goal. We battered them all night, played some of the best football we’ve played for a long time too. In the league we’ve been patient and kept going to the final whistle but they just seemed to lose all hope and stopped doing the things that have brought us so much success recently, it really surprised me to be honest, there was still about 20 mins left.
That said, at some point we were going to lose a tie, can’t make the final every year, that’s what makes football so enjoyable and emotional.
At least we get another crack at it next year.

Ed01, I was in shock when I heard how much Simeone is on. Crazy stuff. As for the game, we did our very best, battered the so called "vaunted Athleti defence" defence to the point that you could see them gasping for air and clinging on. The mistake from Adrian is well, a mistake. Any other player could have made a mistake on the night and we still would have lost, even if Allison played.

We have been breathe-taking in Europe for the past 3 years and I'm just happy we made our dominance count by winning Ol' Big Ears and we have made our dominance count as well in the PL and no. 19 beckons. Oh, did I also mention we won the CWC and the European Super Cup? Had someone told you we would do all this would happen after the crap show in Kiev, you would never have believed it. So we dust ourselves up. Regroup. Go again and finish the season strong. next season, we are coming for the CL. Whoever has it from now will only be renting it from us, lol.

{Ed001's Note - we are lucky to have won what we have already, it makes people spoilt.}

I thought liorente was good. Changed the game for them.

Adrian's face was heartbreaking after his mistake. He's played damn well for us in the past so I won't be making a scapegoat of him.

I have to say, I have no idea how we lost that game. We battered them for 90 minutes. Yes gini was class. Salah was a bit of a disappointment. This is the first time I've thought that cashing in on him might be a good idea. If we could get 150mil I'd take it I think. Still think he's a great player but someone who can finish better and link up better would be ideal for mane and firmino.

The guys played really well against a high-quality, hard-working, well drilled side that have the capacity to stop anyone in Europe on their day.

Klopp got his gameplan spot on and the lads executed it well. Unfortunately, we just couldn't convert the chances in the 90 minutes and then Adrian scuffed a clearance and that killed us. Find me a player who hasn't done that at some stage in their career. The cost was just very high.

It's well shyte to be out at last 16 stage, but I just don't see any scope to hammer anyone.

@Robbie - Salah was our key player, imo. It was his constant movement and drawing opposition defenders (they basically had both Koke and Saul playing left mid at one point in the second half to protect Lodi from him), ability and willingness to get on the ball that made the space that we constantly exploited down our right. Yeah, he gave the ball away a couple of times, but that's a consequence of trying risky balls to create chances. It wasn't co-incidence that nearly everything good came down that flank.

12 Mar 2020 19:14:34
It wasn't coincidence, it was trent and the ox rather than salah.

I just think if we want to remain one of the world's best teams we need a more clinical finisher. Salah is never going to be given the space he was in his 1st season and if we can get a huge amount for him I think there are better players.

{Ed001's Note - it was not just Trent and Ox. It was a combination of the way we played. It was also Bobby pulling Thomas away from the area and Salah's constant movement towards the centre forcing their centre backs to hold away from the area too. To suggest Salah had no part is just ludicrous, especially as he tormented Lodi all game.}

After chance to reflect on last night's game. I'll still say we need that extra spark in midfield, coutinho maybe and definitely a new top striker. Absolutely love firmino but let's be honest he hasn't scored a goal at Anfield all season. that's bad really. Fowler and owen would of had 25 to 30 goals this season. Not saying get rid of bobby but he needs competition for his place. Haven't really seen much of Werner but everyone raves about him. Worth a punt?

{Ed001's Note - wait what? Did you not see the game yesterday when he scored, at Anfield...}

12 Mar 2020 19:19:16
Salahs treatment on here always baffles me. He was by far the best performer of the front 3 last nite yet still gets stick. i actually thought Mane had a stinker (even allowing for Trippier doing a good job on him) and firmino only woke up after an hour. i know it does be well discussed on here that Salah does be looking for a move and I think that influences people's opinions. He's been head and shoulders ahead of Mane and Firmino since Christmas. He's chasing his 3rd golden boot in 3 seasons for christ's sake.

{Ed001's Note - Firmino did not wake up after an hour, he was busy giving Thomas the runaround and keeping him from breaking up attacks.}

12 Mar 2020 20:16:07
I really think Salah's brain is a big problem in his game when he plays on instinct and under pressure and not given time to think he plays better but when he has time I feel he over thinks his movements looks for a pass when shooting is his best option and shooting when he has a pass on a lot of this failing is down to us (myself included) as fans getting on his case he is to greedy he should have passed e. t. c it's taken an effect on his game. I do think he got to big for his boots at one time but I think he has gone to far the other way now he just needs that middle mentality level.

12 Mar 2020 20:18:42
Not on about his movement as much as his actual basic ball control, the ball was constantly bouncing away from him for the whole of the first half. Everyone loves bobby and the work he does for the team but sometimes it seems he's above the slightest criticism. And for me watching the match last night as a fan not looking to criticise players but desperately wanting us to win he seemed well below par for the first 60 mins.

12 Mar 2020 20:26:38
"Salah was disappointing". Good grief! I am not sure if people actually watch us play cos some of the tosh I read on here about Salah and Bobbie for example, is just mind-blowing. Salah had easily 2 sometimes, 3 players on him on the right side YET was able to be a constant danger all game.

People say Ox had a great game and boy, he did. How did he get so much space on the right to operate? Could it be due to Salah and Bobbie drawing attention and leaving space and gaps for Ox and TAA to run into? I'm not a scout or analyst and even I could see that.

Bobbie did look like he was struggling BUT if people actually watch games, you would see that he was dropping deep and to orchestrate and draw players out of position for our boys to run into. He was doing a lot of off-the-ball work that one can't see on the stat sheet and as soon as his chance came, he took it.

Mane did struggle a bit and that was due to the way AM played him. It seemed like they decided to focus more on stopping Mane (even tho, he was excellent in other phases of the game that helped keep the pressure on) and let Salah have more space, IMO. Even then, Mane still created space for others and his pressing and tracking back helped us win the ball back high up the pitch. IMO, I think our front three were again brilliant under the circumstances even tho, they could have scored more.

12 Mar 2020 20:29:35
Meant the league Ed's. as I said I love firmino for what he brings to the team and his work rate is sublime. Just Needs competition from another striker in my opinion. and origi isn't the one to push him is he. Werner to sign soon I reckon.

13 Mar 2020 00:18:49
That was one of the best performances I have seen form our lads in a while. We were a cut above atleti, but thing is, in football you can do what Atleti did and squeeze a result.

The guys put so much passion and energy into that game, when atleti scored their first goal that would have deflated whatever energy we had left. And then the rest is what it is.

12 Mar 2020 22:14:25
I didn't suggest salah did nothing ed01. He had a lot of the ball. Thing is he didn't do much with it.

He's been absolutely amazing for us in these 3 years, but his stats have gone down progressively. His assists and goals that is. I think a more clinical finisher would have put us through last night.

I think there are better players out there. Then again, him being left footed is a big asset. Buy he only seems to pass in the area if he's receiving it again.

{Ed001's Note - I can't be bothered, this is pointless. People only see what they want to see, which is about 3% of what actually happens, then they slag off players over it. You carry on I am done.}

13 Mar 2020 10:54:14
"There are better players out ther". Robbie, give it a rest, man. It's getting boring constantly xpouting the same things and even in the face of things being broken down to you as to how we play and how well Salah is fully integrated on that, you keep spouting the same stuff.

Of course there are percieved better players out there. Have you ever bothered how they would fit into our current front three who have been playing together for 3 seasons now? Will that player provide the movement and intelligence needed to still allow Bobbie and Mane to flourish the same way they do now? Like I said, give it a rest, man.
