*This will be in tomorrows (Sundays) Independent*

The Premier League are considering finishing the season between July and September and then shortening the 20/ 21 season so that the knock on effect isn't as great. One of the options being considered to free up time next season would be to only have one domestic cup competition. It is now widely accepted than the April 4th day was simply to buy time and that it looks like the extensions will need to be increased by months rather than weeks.

The problem with losing one of the domestic cups next season, is will that cup come back the season after?

So the 20/ 21 season will be inconvenienced to finish this one? Hmm.

That makes complete sense WRD, we are 75% through the current season, and as HSF has said above gives them a chance to trial a season by dropping one of the domestic trophies.

Hopefully not hsf. The League cup is dated now. We're the only major European league with 2 domestic cups. Really, the long term goal should be an 18 team Premier League and the FA Cup.

I want it gone not only for next season, but permanently. English football is always behind the curve. We took on VAR a year late and look at the state of it.

BeckersGloves, I posted my opinion on Friday, which is on the discussions page. It was my view that this season should be played out even if it meant next season starting late. I suggested that both domestic cups be dropped, for one season, if there was no other way of getting fixtures in. Ed2 said that this wouldn't happen. Things are in such a state of flux at the moment that no one as a clue how things will pan out. I repeat what I said on Friday, in the scheme of things, football really isn't important.

I have been reading a couple of articles (one in the Saily Mail) whereby it has been indicated that one of the rules for this PL season states that,

The season is defined as 'the period commencing on the date of the first league match on the fixture list of the League's first team competition and ending on the date of the last'. That's the season. It further says in the rules that the season is every team playing each other home and away".

If the seasons is cancelled the article writes, relegation teams esp. could sue for damages cos the PL would have violated its own rules. Not sure the PL and FA want to deal with such law suits esp. since according to the author, these clubs would have legal standing in court. Therefore, my opinion is that the season be played out however way it can be and worry about next season later.
