Hi ed 001 do you reckon vegard heggam and John Arne riise would have been able to hold down places in this current Liverpool team at fullback injuries permitting of course
And do you reckon Karl Heinz riedle would have been able to play the firminho role up top?
Would love your opinion please mate.

{Ed001's Note - god no. Riedle was a target man for starters, very good but not at the level we are at now. Riise was a very average left back and a poor left mid. Heggem could do something incredible one minute but then make 25 silly mistakes over the next few weeks to make up for it. None of the 3 are good enough for the current team, though Riedle at his peak would be closest. It just shows how bad we were that people actually rate Riise because he looked good compared to his team mates.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Never got the hype over riise he’s a good strike on him that’s all for me and seemed a sound lad!

{Ed001's Note - spot on mate.}

Thank you for reply Ed much appreciated.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome mate. Nice to have something to talk about!}

Ed maybe a crazy one here but at their full powers and peak who do you think is a better player and more importantly would be suited to our firminho role
Jari litmanaen or del piero and could either of them be a better fit for the firminho role now instead of Bobby.

{Ed001's Note - Litmanen was magical and would have been very close to Bobby at least, maybe even better. Del Piero was good, but at his best he was better at using his pace to get into dangerous positions, rather than dropping off to create space ahead for other runners. Houllier's criminal lack of use of Litmanen was what killed off his career with us. The team should have been built around Litmanen but Houllier barely used him and didn't seem to know how to use him either.}

I loved him Ed from his Ajax days when we signed him I thought Liverpool finally get their world class striker and then he got used so poor it was a joke
Thanks for the reply Ed.

Ive not forgiven Riise for that own goal in the 07/ 08 champions league semi against chelsea. Cost us another final appearence.

24 Mar 2020 11:12:02
Riise was never a small guy, but he seemed to bulk up big time around 03/ 04 (not fat, just bulk. Too much time in the weight room? ), lost a bit of pace and then it became apparent that he wasn't that good a defender without recovery pace, and had no way to beat his man as a winger.

Aurelio was far better.

24 Mar 2020 11:21:05
Oh Fabio Aurelio.

We would have had no left back troubles throughout the mid to late 00's and early 2010's if only he could have stayed fit.

{Ed001's Note - or if he could have got up to speed without needing so many games to get there after each injury. When he got going he was brilliant though.}

24 Mar 2020 11:22:40
Loved Litmanem, all my mates (not pool fans) mugged me off for it! he's actually one of my favorites over the years!

Arullio, class i thought, touch fragile, but ed 001, surly hed get in our current side? even if not every game.

{Ed001's Note - Litmanen was an incredible player, he was a world class player that Houllier had no idea how to utilise. Such a waste of one of the truly great players of his generation.

Aurelio hasn't the pace or the workrate to get up and down the touchline for 90 minutes mate. Fantastic player but he doesn't suit the style of play. Ability-wise there is no question he would push Robbo and Mane on the left but fitness and mobility are just lacking.}

24 Mar 2020 11:43:48
thanks. i remember him Aurellio featuring in centre midfield at times if my brain is right.?

{Ed001's Note - I don't remember him playing in the centre, again though mobility would be an issue, unless he could play the deep role.}

24 Mar 2020 11:50:43
Fantasy football now,
What about Ruud Gullit in the Firmino role? (I wish I was young again (period) and not only obsessed with Van Basten in those teams. )

24 Mar 2020 16:54:05
Aurelio played in the center a couple of times in Rafa's last season, most notably against Fiorentina when we were absolutely shyte and Rafa came out of the dressing room visibly red faced at the start of the second half from an uncharacteristic bout of using the hairdryer.

As you say Ed001, just couldn't get time on the ball to use that wand of a left foot.

{Ed001's Note - it is such a shame that we never got to see enough of him. He was decent defensively as well as having that demon left foot.}

Fab Aurelio was one of my fav. players. Knew him at Valencia where he was class and was chuffed when we signed him. Tho he was not mobile and was severely injury-prone, the guy had one of the best left fots I have ever seen. He was also a dead ball genius. Watching that peach of a free kick at OT in the 08/ 09 season in the 4-1 drubbing of the mancs, never gets old.
