Ed001 in your opinion who was the better player Maradona or Pele, and how does Dalglish compare to them two? Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - Pele was before my time, so I have not seen as much of him, which makes my choice Maradona. Dalglish is a fair way off, brilliant as he was, those two are a whole different level, above anything Dalglish, or Messi and CR7 for that matter, could do.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I did not watch Pele play in real time and the little I saw of him, he was way ahead of his time in the things he was doing. Bobby Charlton once said that Pele, was the most naturally gifted footballer he had ever seen BUT having read one of his many books, Pele worked HARD on his game and was always finding ways to get better cos his dad Dondinho (who lost his pro career due to injury) rode him hard.

As for Maradona, I did watch him play in real time and they call him the god of football for a reason. He was simply amazing. Hi ability was a gift from the gods IMO, plain and simple. That 1986 WC was the stuff of legends at the time (I was 10). The reason why people think Diego was better than Pele was that Pele played in a star-studded Santos and Brazilian team with legends alongside him.

On the other hand, Maradona had average at best, teams (for club and country) around him and STILL led his country to two WC finals, winning one. To conclude, the ONLY reason we know who or where Napoli is on a global map is becos of Diego (won the league and UEFA Cup with them) . He made Napoli relevant till this very day. IMO, CR7 and Messi are not fit to carry the boots of these gods of the game. not even close.

I watched Pele live only at the 1970 World Cup, and then subsequently been reading up on him and watching tapes and videos of him for years and years. Saw Maradona play for most of his career.

For me it's Pele, the best player ever, any day of the week.

I watched Maradona live at the 86 world cup and I also watched the documentary the other day. What a player, if you are in any doubt then watch some highlights. He was magical with the ball. There is no one even close. A joy to watch, if he was around playing now then he would be able to show his skills even more, as he was hacked to death! Class.

ArAy1969, I can fully agree with your choice of Pele cos there is a more than strong argument for that. IMO, there is no argument to be made for Ronaldo or Messi to be the best of all time. Not after watching both Pele, Maradonna or even Ronaldo 9 (the best CF to ever play the game, IMO) .

While Ronaldo R9 is my favorite Brazilian CF, I would rather say that Johann Cruyff would be No.3 on my all time list, Red Meister. The first and original "Firmino type" player in the sense that he was all over the field wherever he was needed and yet scored enough goals as the CF. The first "complete " player I ever saw play the game of football.

My main issue with Maradona was that despite all the superlative performances and achievements on the field performances, he would cheat, play dirty and his lifestyle was hardly that of a model citizen. Theoretically, the off field part really shouldn't play a part in judging a player, but it ends up doing it even at a subconscious level.
