Hi ED001, hope you are keeping ok despite the crazy and sad situations of late.
As things are slower than normal, I just wanted to request if it would be possible to move the John Barnes player profile up on your priority list? No worries if it's not possible for you to get to at the moment. Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - I can do that for you mate.}

I'd like to see that player profile Probably my favourite player and rapper 😉

How do you think he would have got on if he'd been around as a player in this day and age? Pre and Post injury that forced him to change his game winger to centre midfielder?

I think. if he was at his peak playing days in this era, one of our front three would be struggling for game time and he'd be worth around £200 million.

{Ed001's Note - he would be up there with Messi and Ronaldo in this era. With no one trying to break him in half every time he got the ball, as you simply can't do it now, and bowling green modern pitches, Barnes would be unstoppable. He would suffer a lot less injuries, partially due to the lighter tackles, partially due to lower wear and tear on flatter pitches and mainly down to a more professional lifestyle he would have to adopt. Barnes would have to be in perfect shape all the time, rather than carrying a few extra pounds. His diet would be laid out for him etc. It would take his game to a whole new level.}

Yes Ed001 👍.

{Ed001's Note - he was such a special player.}

Loved Barnsey! also think formations now would help him. 442 would mean he’s was back in left back positions! Mostly got chalk on his boots as now he could still do that but also play inside, just off etc. more than he did.

Seriously Ed and lad's could you just imagine a John Barnes in his prime playing for Liverpool there would be no modern day defender that could live with him.

{Ed001's Note - he was strong as an ox as well, so defenders trying to tactically foul him would just bounce off him in the modern era or get themselves sent off trying to bring him down.}

My favourite Liverpool player of all time. 87/ 88 team played the most exciting football we ever played, in my opinion. We lost Rush and went to another level.
Barnes was always shackled with the "he never did it for England" label. I could never care less. Agree with Ed01, totally. Playing now on better pitches, different rules regards to contact and, as important, better understanding of diet, he would be up there with the very best.

Barnes did actually did it for England as he was brilliant in the 1086 World Cup so not sure what all the fuss was about, really.

{Ed001's Note - yeah but none of us saw that one, so we wouldn't know.}

I and so many from my neck of the woods support Liverpool due to John Barnes
What a player only rob jones Comes anywhere close to being my all time fave red but Barnes takes it
He would be near 150m in this current climate easily.

Ed01, come on man. You had to know that it was a typo and that I meant the 1986 World Cup, right?

{Ed001's Note - oh really? I would never have guessed ;-)

Thanks ED001, really appreciate it. I have always said Barnesy would be up there with CR7 and Messi so it's good to hear a similar endorsement from yourself. In terms of his qualities he could pick a pass, take a player (or a few on) as though they were not there, take a free kick from a goal scoring position, score goals (including 'rare headed goals'. strange as he seemed to score a few with his head), take pens, had power, pace, reinvented himself to play in the holding role later in career but still made it a success. I'm not sure you could match his attributes to any footballer of this era. ED001 have you ever met him? I have a Crown Paints jersey with 10 on the back. Would love him to sign it one day!

{Ed001's Note - a few times actually, he was always out and about in Liverpool and lived in the Albert Dock for a while. Maybe still does? Always a nice guy and always happy to stop and chat with fans in my experience.

One thing you missed out was his ability to defend set pieces. He was the guy at the near post and cut out probably 50% of the balls played in before they reached anywhere dangerous. Barnes was excellent in the air.}

Thanks ED001, good point re his defensive qualities.

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate.}

Didn’t he score a header from outside the box maybe against Watford or is my memory playing games.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate, I don't remember that.}
