in line with our recent celebration around the 2005 Istanbul champions league final.

how important was it to be in champions league back then, given we got to finals in 2 out of 3 seasons, would that of brought in anywhere near as much income as now?

i know H&G financially ruined us but did we squander away all those earnings?

{Ed001's Note - it brought in comparatively more as the TV income from the Prem was lower in comparison then. The problem was that we had 3 people with no idea about football in charge working with a man who had no idea how to manage a budget. H&G + Parry were a mess and Rafa squandered millions as well with his huge turnover of players.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Barcelona was absolutely incredible. But the miracle of Istanbul still stands out as the greatest night IMHO. There was a trophy at the end and we looked so out matched in the first half. Also on paper it should have been theirs.

For some reason Steven Gerrard doesn't seem to get the respect I think he's earned with some Liverpool fans. It doesn't bother me that he liked a drink and had a couple of fights. I reckon most working class lads, growing up I'm tough areas, have had the odd fight. And wasn't he sticking up for his cousin?
Anyway, forget all that. Gerrard was one of the most amazing players I've ever seen in any coloured shirt. I absolutely loved him. He took the team and games by the scruff of the neck on many times, not just Istanbul. Most players who played with him will tell you he was the best they ever played with. Torres for example. Who played with some great players, including iniesta, lampard, xavi.

What a player. I think he'd get in my Liverpool dream team alongside wheelan and mcmahon.

What we be other peoples midfield, of Liverpool legends? I'd be tempted to swap mcmahon for Barnes but also think I'd probably play Barnes up front with rush and Dalglish. That said I think salah could get in our front line as could fowler. So tough. No suarez, mane, Bobby, torres. Owen even. We have always been blessed with unbelievable strikers eh.

Hicks, Gillette and Rafa I agree with but Rick Parry does know what he's doing. Look at his track record.

{Ed001's Note - I was, he is clueless and inept. I wrote an article about it a few months back: Rick Parry: The Embodiment of the Peter Principle. He was truly awful for the club.}

ed I agree to some point with Rafa but he was all ways shopping at a lower level than the players he wanted. did he not want Dani Alves for £12m so they got jermaine pennant instead and he tried to get david Silva and David Villa. But he never got backed am sure them for would of delivered the prem for us.

{Ed001's Note - yes, but he still wanted ridiculous amounts of players every season because he couldn't man manage like Klopp or similar managers. Rafa wouldn't work to help a player settle and become the player he wanted, he would just want to replace them. If he had got Alves, he wanted him for right wing not full-back by the way. I like Rafa, but he is a chequebook manager and doesn't have the coaching ability to improve players, he just wanted to buy better ones rather than make a player better.}

Didn’t Rafa try and replace Alonso with Barry, he may be in Liverpool folklore but that was a mistake. Although it did push Alonso to have his best season with us before moving.
But Rafa wasted loads of money, aqualani being an obvious highlight.

Basically speaking yes, WY. There have been suggestions that Alonso was going to leave irrespective of Rafa's pursuit of Barry, or that Rafa had devised a system to use both of them, but when Alonso left Rafa did try to buy Barry having pursued him for over a year. And likely would have signed him but for the existence of Manchester City.

Worth noting that more Liverpool fans than would admit it later thought that replacing Alonso with Barry was a good idea btw. Alonso was 'poor' in 07/ 08 apparently.

Personally couldn't believe some of the transfer business under Rafa. Arbeloa out, Glenn Johnson in (for £17m! ) . Robbie Keane anyone? And ofcourse Aquilani. Yes, he got Torres but we never played an attractive style under Rafa - the players looked shackled and I agree with Ed01 in that he didn't seem to have good relationships with the squad. Bit of a school master type - not my cup of tea and I was pleased when we went for a change. Possibly a very competent manager but nowhere near Klopp's level.
