Hi ed01 and ed02

Not a Liverpool related question but in light of Troy Deeney's comments that he believes that there is at least 1 gay or bi player in each football team how far do you think we are from seeing players come out.

More importantly what effect do you think this will have on the league. There is of course a stigma attached and everyone has their own beliefs but would this have a positive or negative effect on the league? Would players be more open to joining the Premier League if they felt they are able to express themselves for example.

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure what Troy Deeney has said but he may well be right - but I would doubt it is true of evey club. There is a stigma within sports in certain countries and England is no exception to this. The captain of one English side accused a player of being gay when asking if any of the players wanted to join him on a visit to a museum. There have been plenty of homophobic comments made by people in the crowd and by players around Europe. The United States has been accepting of those who have decided to discuss it openly.}

I never understand why people see it as important that a footballer come out in public as openly gay? They’re sexuality is a complete irrelevance. They might well tell their team mates (I would hope they feel in an environment where they can), but it is frankly non of the general public’s business, nor should they care either way.

{Ed002's Note - People don’t see it as important.}

Who cares if a player is gay or bi whoever's he plays for he's a human being earning a living anybody thinks otherwise is narrow minded.

I'd imagine it's the reaction from opposition "fans" that would stop some players coming out whilst they're still playing.

{Ed002's Note - And players.}

Clearly it’s important to a portion of people Ed2 because this subject comes up every now and then.

Again Irish, they shouldn’t have to divulge their sexuality whatever it is, it’s none of fans business.

{Ed002's Note - ll if it only comes up now and then it is not a big deal.}

Bang on shaq, it makes no difference who you decide to lay with in your private life.

I think years ago it was a bigger deal as there were less sexualities in the limelight so they wanted representation and naturally turned towards footballers who were among the most famous to lead the way.

I will never understand the clamour to declare your preferences as it matters to you and your partners only.

Like NBA legend and icon Bill Russell once said, "The question is not whether my team mate is gay or not. The real question is, can he play"?

As a gay man my self it is positive to hear other fans accepting of it. Frankly I don't care about football players coming out or not, however I feel the media are desperate for it to happen.
I think that the reaction of opposition fans and the close nature of dressing rooms being Hugh pressured situations and with the different cultures in there (some more accepting than others) are the reasons we have no openly gay footballers.
