Can anyone give a a insight into Thiago I don’t know anything of him and can’t judge on clips of him?

Agree1 Disagree0

The fella have been around for years mate
Top player it has to be said.

04 Jul 2020 15:34:26
He’s good at passing the ball sideways and doing fancy flicks. Terrible at tackling and not what you’d describe as a hard-worker in the middle of the park. Has all the physical presence of a carrier bag blowing in the wind and is made out of crisps he’s that injury prone. At 29 he’s neither going to get better less injury prone.

If you believe the Echo they have just put the rumours to bed saying the story is unfounded. Coupled with what Ed002 has explained I think we can put this one on the scrap heap.

Nice and positive review of his attributes there 6 times.

The rumour makes absolutely no logical sense. It deserves to be in the scrap heap.

I take it you don't rate him then 6Times?

Thiago is a top class player. Always looks to turn on the ball, great awareness of his surroundings, superb vision, great range of passing, composed in the final third, deceptively athletic, very strong on the ball, and can control the tempo of a game.

He can be late to spot danger and (a bit like Matip) he seems to have different top speeds depending on whether he's running forward or backwards. Thiago also seems to miss a month of every single season injured. He'd be a very good replacement for Gini or Keita in my opinion. He's ran the show at Bayern for half a decade.

Also worth noting he has never had a good coach. He's had to work with chequebook managers like Guardiola and Ancelotti for most of his career. So i'd actually argue that even at 29 there is every chance he could improve under a proper coach like Klopp. Milner did.

6Times trotting our the same old garbage every time a player he doesn’t like gets linked. 35 games played this season, 42 last season, he’s hardly ‘made of crisps’.

04 Jul 2020 19:08:06
He’s only started about 20 league games this year and missed about a third of the season with injuries . He’s been hit by a lot of injuries this last 2/ 3 seasons. He’d get found out pretty quickly in the premier league as being lightweight and injury prone.

If it’s true (and I sincerely hope it’s not), then it would be an incredibly poor bit of business, particularly given that we would appear to be happy to spaff 30/ 35 million quid on an over the hill has been midfielder.

Thiago doesn’t have many miles left on the clock and really should be left to some other mug punter.

6 times I disagree completely tbh with how you view him. To say he offers little defensively is unfounded considering he ranks 9th in bundesliga for number of successful tackles and interventions. That is more impressive when 6 of the other 8 are defenders and it's not common for a player who plays with a team who have so much possession to be that highly ranked. He's very strong at passing between the lines and carrying the ball forward so never can be considered as someone who just goes sideways. Only just turned 29 recently and many players similar in his style can be quality for many years after that age. Kroos, modric, Alonso, pirlo, David Silva, xavi, moutinho have showed that playing in that role into their 30s is not a big issue. Look at gini and hendo who have enjoyed their best form ever despite being older. For 30 mil I think it would be great business for us.

6Times, Klopp has said repeatedly that Thiago is a player that he likes very much, per Ed02. This means that regardless of your perceived flaws, he is a Klopp type player and we all know what Klopp type players are like. Smart, intelligent, talented, hard grafting and out of possession.

Now does that mean we will sign him? No IMO, cos the deal at a business level, makes no sense at all after Ed02 broke things down and also on a football level, why pay a 29 yr old 250k in wages with no sell-on value?

04 Jul 2020 22:13:06
It is quite obvious 6 times has just reeled off the usual comments about players he doesn’t rate
He had not looked at any stats or actually watched the player this season I’m sure.

Regardless of Thiago's talents or failings it was a non starter from the beginning. In the 10 years that FSG have owned the club, I have seen them buy someone from that age group only twice; Caulker and Rickie Lambert. And we all saw how that went. Klopp will continue saying nice things about players. It means nothing in the conference room when deals are being done. And I don't see FSG ever considering a player seriously when there is no sell-on value. Otherwise I would recommend Willian who would be a perfect backup for both Mane and Salah. But it would never happen.

I don't think every signing should have to have a so called re sale value to be deemed smart signing. For 30 mil in this market if you could get a player to add 2 or 3 seasons of impact then that is good return. We're not realistically going to make money back on VVD but he's been invaluable in terms of what he can bring to us on the pitch in his peak years. Would you not sign Salah, mane, Henderson currently for 30mil if they were available just because of their age? Arsenal spent far more on aubameyang, Barcelona are paying 60mil for pjanic who's older and not even better than thiago. City have had joy after spending big on mahrez, wolves spent 30mil on 29yr old jimenez and moutinho also worth every penny for them. If thiago wasn't into the last year of his contract then he'd never be available for less than 50 or 60 mil when the market sees midfielders like Fred, jorginho, pjanic, sigurdsson moving at those prices while often at late 20s. 30mil today sets the price for many average transfers. If we could get anything above 20 mil for each of grujic, Wilson and shaqiri than why should it be bad to invest slightly more on a proven top class player who can suit or system and play in any of the midfield positions, a Bayern Munich regular for 7 years after playing in a quality Barcelona team at their peak and a Spanish international who's won titles his whole career and just turned 28 to 29 recently. For that price it's not a terrible risk to assume he can't give us value for money with a few years of class in our team. Lallanas 100k+ and clynes wages off the books wouldn't surpass offering him a 170-180k salary for 3 year contract.

I'd wait til next summer to see the situation of adding midfielders to take over when we might know more of the timeline in which hendo, gini, and obviously Milner will have to be upgraded. Keita, OX and possibly Curtis Jones may become more influential crucial players in that time and a younger promising player I think can wait just now.

The chance to bring in a proven top class midfielder in the prime years for his type of player while we're currently strong and looking to keep up this high level can't be a bad idea. Fergie and other league winning managers would use these signings at times when they needed a little strengthening to stay at the best level. I'd like to think our recruiters are not so robotic to not consider the possibilities of this type of deal maybe being positive.

05 Jul 2020 02:15:52
Klavan, Milner, toure were all similar to caulker and Lambert like you mention. I know they cost little to nothing and were coming in to weaker sides back then but the money spent on Allison, VVD, AOC as examples is not with the expectation that we will eventually sell on for a profit, sometimes you can be willing to invest in getting a player who gives you quality on the field for a period of years at his peak and will never recoup that investment when his best years are passed. So it's not simply nonesense to consider that 30mil for a quality midfielder who may add 2 or 3 years at least of top level performances would be anything other than good business.
