Just watching utd bayern replay. Hate to say it but utd were unbelievable in those days. As good as anything I've seen.

So I got a question for eds and reds. A hard one to answer I'm sure: if you could take any player from urd back then, who would it be? I'm going for stam.

{Ed001's Note - for what purpose? For this team now? No one. For our team then? Pretty much anyone in that team would have improved it.}

Agree0 Disagree0

You wouldn't swap matip for stam ed01? Objectively. I wouldn't because one is a utd player and one a red. But I'm trying to be objective. Or giggs for shaqiri?

It's a horrible question. I regret evdn asking it if I'm honest.

{Ed001's Note - I assumed you meant to go in the team, not to be reserves.}

28 Jul 2020 19:02:28
To be honest I did mean 1st team but was trying to save face mate. Surely Scholes gets in our midfield though?

{Ed001's Note - no, he can't press or tackle, he would not suit our current way of playing. He was of his time, the game has moved on. The only two possible places he could get in the team would be in place of Bobby or Fabinho and I would take the Brazilians over him any day. Great midfielder in his day, but it is no longer his day.}

28 Jul 2020 19:17:53
That's it isn't it ed01. Sorry for my attempted deceit, you're too good for that, apologies. Giggs was great in the 442 days and actually beckham looks better than I remembered. But it's 433 now and I prefer salah. That's why I went for stam. Gomez has the potential to become the better cb, but stam was one of the worlds best, if not the best in his day. Could he cope with the high line?

3 years ago it would be an easy question to answer - schmicheal.

{Ed001's Note - Beckham is not a bad shout actually, he has the energy and ability to play one of the midfield roles. I completely forgot about him. He would certainly be good competition at the least for Hendo and Gini etc. As for Stam, I have no idea if he could play the high line, he was excellent in his day and looks quick enough. Thinking about it, you have a point. The more I consider it, the more I have to say that, much as I love Gomez he has a long way to go to reach Stam's level on a consistent basis. So yes, Stam, I was thinking he played left side and so comparing him to van Dijk before.}

28 Jul 2020 19:35:06
He did play lcb didn't he, stam? But he looks right footed as far as I can see. I hated utd, of course, but I was going for them against bayern. My old man had a go at me for supporting the German team (he used to like sitting in the basement eating spam) but I admired teddy Sheringham.

28 Jul 2020 19:38:48
It would have to be with it a doubt schmeichel the best in the premier league that is until allison came along.

{Ed025's Note - alisson is a cracking keeper hunter but you cant compare him to PS just yet mate, if he does the business for another 5 years then yes, but at the moment your having a giraffe..

28 Jul 2020 19:46:47
Footballs a weird game eh. Hate utd. But am buzzing by goals from teddy and ole. I really wanted them to win. We hate utd over docking workers taking jobs. And now it's ingrained in us. But was holding my breath as the could've got 4 goals in 2nd half if not for but for PS. He won that game.

28 Jul 2020 20:44:43
Beckham played CM and was very busy. His passing is top notch and could read the game. The media make out footballers are idiot. And many of them are, we have a prominent striker with a law degree. Of I had a choice to bring it couts, thiargo or Beckham 20 years ago, I'd go beckham. Works hard and sees things. Georgious passer of z ball.

My old man tested me (Scottish hard man) "luke at deved Beckham. Is he a handsome man.? I looked and said" yes" he put his arm around me and said. Good, you're no poof"

My old man was a good person who had a very hard life. His left sided politics were gained at stone henge. So.

I used to like you Robbie, until you mention the words “ buzzing, Ole, Teddy and wanting them to win 😎.

United won everything that season but I don’t think it was their greatest team. We should have knocked them out in round 4 of the fa cup but a never foul free kick then a defensive collapse cost us. I think Dwight Yorke as a challenge for Firminho would be interesting. He’s the only one though. Just because I don’t think many of the players they had then would suit our current style.

28 Jul 2020 23:54:52
Even though Alisson best in the world, you could argue he’s not reached Schmeichels level
Stam > Gomez
Beckham > Gini
Keane > Hendo
Prime Yorke > Firmino.

In defence of Robbie. I remember watching that final and wanting united to win. English teams had been dominating Europe for so long and then suddenly we were out of Europe. Heysel and hooligans. For years after being allowed back we were a poor second to the rest of Europe. Remember Blackburn in Europe. United's win opened the door to the rest of England. Someone had to do it. Would we have gone on to win in 2001 and 2005, I don't know. In the same way LFC teams will find it easier to win the league with the yolk taken off, United did it for all of England. So for that one time only, I wanted them to win.

{Ed0666's Note - WTF?! You wanted United to win a European Cup final? Put the crack pipe down my friend and seek help. I’m not even sure you’re not a troll. I’m disgusted.

29 Jul 2020 05:43:34
Sorry Ed! It was when I was at art college so who knows what I was on. Not that sort of pipe though!

You look at the situation now though. English clubs reaching the late stages of all tournaments. I don't want them to win but I am happy that English football is strong. Which in turn means we can win a lot more. The last 20 years in Europe compared to the wilderness we were in before the United win. I believe it opened the gates for all English clubs.

Sorry, but I can't lie. Not a troll just a lover!

{Ed0666's Note - You’re a good person Potclay because I never want a rival English side to prosper. Is that bad? Maybe I need to go to art college to realign my moral compass. I could start by ordering a man Utd kit and hoping city win the champions league this season?

29 Jul 2020 07:50:37
I always thought Beckham was a better CM than a wide player. As for Scholes, he would not start in our midfield cos of the reasons Ed01 mentioned. That does not be he was a crap player cos he was a great player, no doubt.

29 Jul 2020 11:20:46
N btw, I was all in for Bayernnin that final. Like Ed0666, wanting Utd to win a European Cup final is complete blasphemy in my book. I’m not English so not arsed about the whole “Support the English side” thingy, I’m afraid.

And if people think Utd fans were going for LFC vs Milan Both times, vs RM and vs Spurs in our last 4 CL finals, there is a swamp down there in Florida that I would like to sell you.

29 Jul 2020 20:49:36
Sorry drogue mate. I was brought up to support your country in European games or international even. If utd played bayern tomorrow I'd be drowning in sourkraut and and wearing a bayern shirt. That night, everyone in the room I was at wanted utd to win and I was drawn in.

29 Jul 2020 20:51:53
In my defence I've bedn drinking. Don't remember writing dome of these posts.
