Ed01 if you're about mate.

With some supporters crying over who we might miss out on this summer (instead of trusting Jurgy and the lads) I was wondering if there's anyone that particularly stands out to you in your life time that we had reportedly had interest in that made you think "Ah I wish we had signed him? "

Maybe wishing that we actually made a move for Simao in one of those 16 summers we were linked with him?

Or maybe wished Thommo hadn't dismissed Ronaldo due to weaknesses?

Or maybe you really wished we had stumped up the extra wages Lucas Neill was wanting?

I'm not sure how much we were actually interested in him as I seem to recall Arsenal and Utd being the main parties involved, but as someone who's of the same age and from the same area, I wish we had picked up Aaron Ramsey. Yes I am slightly biased, but I do think he's underrated, he's scored plenty of goals from midfield and would suited breaking forward in some of our teams. Technically excellent, his goal away to Galatasaray from 35 yards with his weak foot is still up there as one of the best goals I've seen.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy a different question to the usual "when's Thiago signing? ".

{Ed001's Note - David Silva. Rafa wanted him and Villa and they have shown themselves to be class players. Silva is one of the best of the Prem era.}

Imagine if Rafa could of had the team he wanted?! I seem to remember he wanted Dani Alves before his move to a Barcelona and we ended up with Glen Johnson instead?!

Imagine the team we had with Rafa plus those guys - Reina, Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano, Dani Alves, Villa, Torres and David Silva 😅.

Torres
Villa - Silva - Gerrard
Alonso - Masch
Aurelio - Agger - Carra - Arbeloa
Reina

What a team that would've been.

Leonardo Brazil left back at 1994 World Cup
I think he is still at PSG in the boardroom now
The first fullback I ever saw who was better then some full fledged wingers.

Torres in goals and Reina up front Zpecialone dunno if that would work🤔.

Man, the fact that we wanted David Villa, David Silva and Dani Alves and instead ended up with Glen Johnson, Ngog and Riera makes me want to cry. We would have won at least one UCl and a couple of league titles if Rafa had gotten his first choice targets.
I hope we don't make the same mistakes going forward now that we are back at the top of the ladder.

JJ, That is cos Leonardo was a creative midfielder playing wingback. At the time actually Leonardo was a CM at Sao Paolo but at the time Brazil often played midfielders at wing back hence, Leonardo’s ability was top class.

01 Aug 2020 09:34:43
Ed your having a laff right?

Kromkamp, Josemi and dossena where class signings! That’s without mentioning kyriakos, Pellegrino and Nunez!

Johncrow, Leonardo was actually a No.10 in his local club, and he was simply played by Tele Santana as the LB for that team. I've seen that happen a lot in Brazil with the national team. Their 1970 World Cup team had four No. 10's; Pele, Rivelino, Tostao and Gerson, all playing across the front and midfield. But you're right about Leonardo. Amazing player.

ArAy1969, you know your history regarding Brazil, man. Even Roberto Carlos was a left midfielder before he went to LB/ LWB. As for Leonardo, he signed for PSG after that '94 WC and played the no. 10 role and is a PSG legend. Remember when they knocked LFC out of the Cup Winners Cup semi final in 1997 where Leonardo ran the show in that first leg?

Some great shouts there Ed!

Totally forgot we were linked with them 2!

{Ed001's Note - more than linked, the deals were all agreed before Prick Parry pulled the plug.}

01 Aug 2020 14:13:17
if we had David Silva and David Villa, we would surely have won more silverware and not struggled as hard when Alonso left.

Alonso is awesome, but a midfield of Gerrard, Silva and Lucas in the Rafa era would surely have been solid enough.

01 Aug 2020 15:01:09
Yes, I remember it Red Meister. And he's supposed to be very competent upper management material too. Even though controversy follows him everywhere. Chased out of Milan, then chased out of PSG, and back now again after running a restaurant for some time in Brazil.

Were Silva and Villa that close ed? Shocking from Parry if so. Aimar always seemed on the cards and never got over the line. Was there anything in that? Also I vaguely remember Lucas Neil not happening because he broke Cisse leg. Or have I made that up?

{Ed001's Note - it was Parry that also nixed the Cristiano Ronaldo deal and nothing to do with Thommo thinking he was weak. It was Parry that refused to spend £3.6m on a teenager! Guy is an imbecile and it is no wonder the EFL is a shambles with that bell running it.

Lucas Neill didn't come because he got offered more money elsewhere and he was only interested in the money despite claiming to be a Liverpool fan. He was not good enough anyway, no idea why we were trying to sign players like him back then. Embarrassing the amount of dross we went for, like that racist piece of **** Lee Bowyer.}

01 Aug 2020 15:21:04
Good god I totally forgot about Bowyer too. Didn't realise Parry was working with the EFL now. It's no wonder we fell so far behind really is it.

Was Aimar ever really a possibility ed?

{Ed001's Note - no mate, he was constantly linked because he had been key to the way Rafa's Valencia team had played but he wanted to buy Silva for that spot, rather than Aimar. The pair had a difficult relationship, so there was little chance of them reuniting at Liverpool. Gerrard ended up filling the speck in the end.

Prick is the chairman of the EFL now. It is like some kind of cosmic joke that such an inept joke of a man is still working in the game.}

01 Aug 2020 15:58:23
What a team we missed out on because of that one man. Embarrassing really and like you said mind boggling how he's now chairman of the EFL. He must have dirt on someone!

{Ed001's Note - he was managing to get himself work as a football consultant after leaving us. The only thing I can think is that people brought him in to ask what he would do and then immediately rule that out as an option....}

01 Aug 2020 19:39:36
surely, £3.6m for a young CR would have been worth it even back in the early 2000s. the desire and talent was clear for all to see, and i remember him playing against us in a pre-season friendly and looked really good.

how then could he justify spending about £4m on the pair of so called French jems (Le Tallec and Pongolle)?
