Seeing a lot of people saying how Thiago is no upgrade on Gini. I love gini, and that brace against Barcelona writes him in folk law, but anyone who watches Bundesliga will appreciate how talented Thiago is and has been throughout his career. He is a world class midfielder, with a different skill set that arguably only firmino has at Liverpool. For me he is an upgrade on Gini, and if we can sell gini for a similar price to what we pay for Thiago, we should do it.

Thiago is better than Wijnaldum in my opinion. Gini works harder but nobody would've said that when he was at Newcastle. It is Klopp who has transformed a once lazy left midfielder into a hard running box to box ball winner.

If Klopp can get his hands on Thiago, he will mould him into the midfielder he wants. On raw ability alone Thiago is the better player. This would be the most exciting transfer we've made in years. Thiago was voted in the FIFpro World XI not long ago. He is world class.

That’s because you don’t appreciate how Wijnaldum fits the Klopp tactics. Or that Wijnaldum rarely gets injured, unlike Thiago who generally misses at least over a third of games a season with one injury or another. You don’t seem to take into account that Thiago doesn’t put in the hard work that Wijnaldum does and the impact that would have one the balance of our midfield? Besides, Thiago is off to PSG so you can stop wetting yourself over him joining.

04 Aug 2020 09:39:21
Looks like he’s off to PSG anyway mate.

04 Aug 2020 10:59:17
So you think Klopp purchased Gini because he was a lazy left midfielder? Not usually the qualities you look for in a new player.

04 Aug 2020 12:17:19
Wijnaldum has sacrificed his normal game to become the integral cog in the machine. He has played almost every league game these last three years and he’s more reliable than my Omega automatic Swiss watch. I challenge anyone to find me five more reliable and effective midfielders at what he does in the premier league than him. If Wijnaldum went I’d rather we went for someone like Donnie van der Beek than Thiago Alcantara as there’s more miles left on the clock and he’s better suited to the way we play.

04 Aug 2020 12:24:25
6 times, stop being so moody and touchy about wijnaldum. I never mentioned the tactics, obviously wijnaldum fits the tactics better, but Thiago is twice the player wijnaldum is. Cheer up, we’ve just won the league.

04 Aug 2020 13:07:09
Not true. 6 times is right. Gini isn't as flashy perhaps. But I remember reading on here that as youth players gini was more highly thought of than Mr messi. He is ultra skillful. You won't see a player (except perhaps Hendo) that can keep a ball under pressure as well. His game often goes under the radar. I guess he feels under appreciated, and who can blame him when fans are so blasé about him.

04 Aug 2020 14:14:59
Can thiago head the ball in the back of the net after coming on second half in a game when we are chasing a game 3-1?

04 Aug 2020 14:32:31
The thing is nobody knows. There's loads of things on paper and we can all look up videos of both players and point out our little tidbits of supreme wisdom.

I like Wijnaldum very much. But if he doesn't want to sign, it's his prerogative. And then it's the clubs prerogative to sell him.

If he does go and it is Thiago who is chosen by the club to replace him then I'm hoping he turns out to be the missing link (like a Fernandes at ManU) that the club has been looking for. So far, in recent history, Klopp has improved almost every player that has been bought. Only injuries have come in the way in certain cases. Wijnaldum was supposed to be lazy, Mane was supposed to have an attitude and Shaqiri was supposed to be a trouble maker. I saw none of that. And they've all contributed in various degrees to what is probably the best football club team on the planet. So I'd rather be optimistic.

Spot on ArAy.

04 Aug 2020 15:01:57
I'm confused by the people who say thiago won't fit our tactics. Surely the best person to judge that are the ones who set the tactics, i. e the coaches and kloppo. If they want him, they feel they can fit whatever tactics we're going to use.

04 Aug 2020 15:32:40
Spot on, Rugby Parker. If Thiago did not fit into our tactics, what in blazes would Klopp (who is a huge fan of his, btw) be doing tying to sign him? Exactly.

As for whether he is better than Gini or not, that is based on opinion only and nothing more. Hence IMO, those saying Thiago is better than Gini based on what Gini actually does for us, are not being fair to him. To those of us who watched Gini way before he signed for us for club and country, he is one of the best midfielders I to ever play for us, talent and ability wise

I mean, I have watched him play the 6, the 8 and the 1à for both club and country and you would think he has been playing these positions for ages if you did not really know him. Not sure Thiago can do that. In addition, Gini is able to patent his game based on the occasion and on what the manager wants from him. Not sure Thiago can do that. So IMO, Gini is the better player as he has more arrows in his quiver than Thiago.

The missing link? Stop talking like you're in 2016. Do you mean the missing link that will bring european success? Premier league success or just world cup success?

We are on top of the world. We don't have a missing link. If gini goes then we may have one. And I will back whoever comes in to the full. Pull on the red Jersey and you have my backing 100%. But I'd rather keep the 1st team players who have taken us to this point.

I'm sure thiago is a great player. But he's a bayern Munich player so I will not be wetting myself over him. If he joins, I will love him. But my football love only goes so far as Liverpool players. And gini is one of our best.

04 Aug 2020 16:20:05
Well said red meister.

04 Aug 2020 17:15:52
It is all academic anyway, Alcântara will be going to PSG on the basis that they have a bottomless pit of money and we don’t have a pot to p*ss in.

04 Aug 2020 17:24:53
Robbiesline, spoken like a true keyboard warrior. Gee I'm bedazzled and bewildered. Impressive rebuttal.

The missing link I'm referring to is having enough to stay on top. It's easier to get to the top than it is to stay there, as I would like the club to do. We'll wait a few decades for you to grasp that concept. A key player who is not committed to the club and doesn't show interest, will leave a missing link behind. Get it, Einstein?

04 Aug 2020 18:00:19
Sorry aray. My comment about 2016 was a bit harsh. I'm just annoyed about people writing off gini for a bayern Munich player. As a reds fan I see the other European giants as enemies.

I didn't read to the bottom of your post mate, and I apologise. You're a sensible poster and I've got a lot of time for you. I should have taken the time to read to the bottom of your post.

And you're right. We are brilliant but we could be better. I don't think it's the midfield that's the problem, and obviously not the defense and gk. I think the cohesion of the front three is not as smooth as it was a year or two ago. I don't know if it's an ego thing with salah and mane or what? I'm not saying they're poor, they're brilliant and I don't think we need to sign another forward in place of the 3 musketeers. I think salah needs to take his eyes off real Madrid and pass more. Its probably as simple as that. Mane isn't the only one to get frustrated with him not passing. The Ox has and so has bobby.

Soz.

04 Aug 2020 18:19:43
Im not sure Thiago would come in and hit the ground running. I think it more likely he would need to be bedded in over a few months as we saw with Fab and Ox. On that basis I would rather we kept Gini as our midfield will miss something at least in the first half of next season which I don’t think we can afford. I’m sure Thiago is a great player and would be a fantastic option to replace Milner if he left (although we would then also need a LB although we could always put keita there 😉) and would push Gini for his spot but I think we should do everything to keep our starters and replace fringe players with better players who will push the starters more no?

04 Aug 2020 19:33:48
Ask anyone who isn't a Liverpool fan who is better out of Thiago and Wijnaldum if you want an honest answer free of bias.

I'm not even going to argue with know it all trolls wearing red tinted glasses.

04 Aug 2020 19:42:00
We're cool Robbiesline. No offense taken nor intended on my part either. Football is a game of passion and sometimes one can be swept up by it without any bad intentions. 😉.

04 Aug 2020 21:15:20
So you think a fan supporting say Everton, Man Utd, Chelsea for example wouldn't be free of bias when it comes to comparing a player from Liverpool?

05 Aug 2020 11:29:10
I agree with what you say. Although I'd like Gini to stay as he's also a very good player. Great energy and fitness levels. And does another of the hard work, some fans take for granted. But feel club need to take the lead and if hasn't signed new deal by a certain date. Then try move him on for best fee possible. Thiago as you say is a wonderfully talented player. And would welcome him with great excitement.
