Hi Ed001,

Have been visiting the site for years. Really appreciate all the work that you and the other Eds do.

Just wanted to get your opinion on something. If it has been asked already, please don't bother answer, I'll try search it up then.

England have two very good right backs now in TAA and AWB, but as both are at in Liverpool and MUFC respectively, there has been a lot of discussion about who's the better player. While TAA has an amazing goal contribution, AWB is considered to be a defensive rock. This leads to discussions that Trent is better suited to the right side of the midfield for England, while AWB should continue as a traditional RB.

Anyway, I digress. Basically the above discussion leads to my question about who you think is a better player (defender specifically)? Of course AWB cannot match Trent's goal contributions, but do you genuinely think that he's a better defender than Trent? Or is it more of a case AWB going in for the last min tackles that make him look like a more gung-ho defender?

Thanks again Eds.

{Ed001's Note - Wan-Bissaka is a superb one-on-one defender, there is no better right-back in the game (that I have seen) to face up a winger running at him with the ball. The rest of his game needs work, particularly the attacking side in comparison to Trent, but one-on-one he is brilliant. Overall Trent is light years ahead of him now, but that is because Trent has taken a huge leap forward over the last couple of seasons. Wan-Bissaka is little better than the player they bought from Palace. I would say that the coaching Trent gets is much better so it has helped him progress so much quicker. He is no longer defensively weak and is so good attacking that he is now at the level of the best attacking full-backs.}

Do England still play that 3 at the back formation? AWB would be a much better option than Walker as that right sided CB, and TAA should own that right flank as a wing back.

Cracking reply mate
Thank you.

Thank you so much Ed001. I really admire TAA, such a cracking player. Of course AWB is also an amazing defended. Good time for English right backs I guess.

{Ed001's Note - very good for right-backs, shame the rest of the defence is so bad!}

Great response, Ed01. I was going to say the exact same thing regarding the coaching AWB is getting at Utd. AWB is a very talented player. He is as you say, the best one on one RB in the game right now. He has great closing speed and even when beaten, his recovery speed and long strides allow him to recover and cut out danger via his solid tackling ability.

The issue here is the coaching in comparison to Trent. AWB is being coached by well, Ole in comparison to Klopp who is light years ahead of him so I don't think Ole is the guy to take AWB to the next level.

Also IMO, another reason TAA is better overall, is cos his position and the way he plays the RB position keeps evolving under Klopp and that will only benefit TAA going forward. As a result, it seems teams are more focused on stopping TAA than actually attacking him.

{Ed001's Note - until Wan-Bissaka improves his quality in the final third, teams will be happy to let him have the ball as he does not offer much threat at the moment. I am surprised he is not doing extra sessions on his crossing.}

I personally think Wan Bissaka is over rated defensively. He is very good at facing up the winger because of his blinding pace. I'd also say he's good at recovery sliding tackles.

The problem is, he is constantly having to make those recovery tackles because he's forever out of position. He's a ball watcher and you can literally see him drifting towards the play when he should be holding a line or marking his man.

Trent might not have the same physicality when it comes to one on one defending but our team is so good at playing the offside trap because all of our defenders have immaculate positional awareness. Also keep an eye on how many clearances Trent makes at the back post. He's hardly slow or bad at tackling either.

As an all round defender, Trent is better for me. Going forward there is not even a debate. United fans are clutching with this comparison. Trent is the best right back i've seen since Cafu. Wan Bissaka is probably only top 3 in the Prem from the current crop. TPereira and possibly Doherty are also better in my opinion but he is up there with those two. Good player but Trent is a generational talent and the comparison looks more desperate every year as Trent continues to go to new levels and AWB is still just a quick player strong in the tackle.

{Ed001's Note - it is not about pace that he is a good one-on-one defender, it takes a lot more than that. It takes concentration and focus, to be able to just watch the ball and not get distracted by tricks. It takes timing, to know when to tackle. You are being overly harsh. Yes he gets caught out of position, but a lot of that is the way he is asked to play and United not having cover the way Liverpool do from the midfield.}

ed001 I think Trent's defending has come on leaps and bounds and he gets made out to be a worse defender than he is. I don't think AWB will ever be great going forward but is great at one on ones but he does seem to get court of of position a lot. I think Reece James looks a better all round player than AWB and AWB is the oldest out of three.

{Ed001's Note - Wan-Bissaka was a winger, so it is odd that he is so poor in attacking areas! It must be remembered that he is also only a very recent convert to playing full-back, so he is still learning the position. He may be older in years, but he is younger in terms of time playing the role.}

HMB, I feel you on some of your points regarding AWB but I do not think he is overrated, man. As Ed01, that is harsh, man. The kid is legit, IMO and is able to play the RB position on a fundamental level. I also agree that people trying to make this comparison are desperate (esp. Utd fans) in a bid to bring down TAA cos well, that is who they are. That does not mean he is overrated.

Ed01's last point is also very important to consider. Utd play a system that does not get any of their FB's any help from midfield nor from the wingers ahead of them. For evidence, go watch the Utd game at Anfield where AWB was getting double and triple teamed (by Bobbie, Mane and Ox) and the kid was getting ripped at will and got NO help from the midfield nor more importantly, his tactically-deficient manager. And that is not the first time I have seen that happen to him.

I mean if I could see that could see that and I am sure other managers can see that and target it, what is Ole's excuse for not seeing nr fixing it? This is my point. Ole is the problem and if he does not improve, AWB will not improve his quality offensively and will actually start to regress, IMO.

I did say he was strong in the tackle. His pace helps him mask his positional errors but he still has to be good at tackling once he gets to the player. I'd say he's one of the best at tackling in the league. I just think he lacks in many other areas defensively.

Didn't mean to come across as harsh. As i said, i think he's amongst the best in the league still. However the fact that he gets compared to Trent means he is over rated for me. Over rated doesn't mean bad. Just means people think he is better than he is. Which is apparent whenever he's compared to Trent who would walk into any team in the last 10 years at right back. You need to go back to the days of Zanetti, Cafu and Lahm to find right backs at Trents level.

Wan Bissaka just isn't in that kind of discussion, and I doubt he ever will be working under Solskjaer. Top 3 or 4 in the league even at his tender age, but not worthy of comparison to Trent. Certainly not yet.

Modern fullbacks at the top level have to offer more than just defensive solidarity, I have no doubt that AWB has talent but he lacks in too many areas to even be compared with Trent. Playing RB at its ‘fundamental level’ is t that useful when the games moved on. He’s a good player but over hyped because he plays for Manchester United. If he was still at palace these TAA v awb Discussions wouldn’t even be happening.

09 Aug 2020 13:01:29
AWB is generally in a 2 vs 1 situation as neither our midfield nor our RW provides adequate support. On top of that Lindelof has to cover for Maguire most of the time so AWB doesn't get much support. Yet most of the chances conceded by UTD is from the other side.

TAA is one of the best player in the league no doubt and is ever improving with his defending but surely even L'Pool fans are smart enough to see that AWB is better defender than TAA.

09 Aug 2020 13:24:21
He's quite simply not, Deependra. There is more to defending than tackling. Maldini once said words to the effect of "If i have to make a tackle i have already made a mistake". Wan Bissaka is constantly making tackles because his positioning is so bad.

Please don't get me wrong, he is a good young player, but the Trent comparisons are genuinely embarrassing. Its literally like comparing Adama Traore with Kylian Mbappe. They're in different leagues. Trent got nominated for the Balon D'or already and he's actually younger than AWB. This is exactly what i mean about him being over rated. People genuinely believe there is a comparison to be made.

09 Aug 2020 13:43:48
Do you think England could do a back five of taa Gomez Maguire walker/ awb and then someone like chilwell and it will work? Seems we are so short of too quality centre backs and centre mids that this may solve it to a degree - sitting Henderson and one other in the middle - full backs have license to get forward and support Kane, rashford sterling Sancho whoever is picked.

09 Aug 2020 14:15:09
ed001 with the England full back talk what do you think of Ben Chilwell I think he is a good left back but very overrated because his English. I do like the look of Bukayo Saka and think he could turn into a world class talent there if he stays there.

{Ed001's Note - Chilwell is ok but no more than that and has his head up his backside thinking he is world class already. Massively overrated. Shame as he had the potential to be fantastic.

Saka is a winger and needs to play there.}

09 Aug 2020 15:42:13

Firstly if anyone is comparing the overall quality of TAA and AWB then you are right they are absurd. I have already said that TAA is one of the best players in the league (see I didn't mention a position) . He is hands down the best RB in the world currently IMO. But AWB is the better one on one defender. And I strongly disagree with the narrative in the media that TAA is a bad defender. TAA is ever improving as a defender and is one of the better RB as defender in the league too. But AWB is better.

As for your quote from Maldini firstly he has denied saying those quotes somewhere. Even then Maldini played in great Milan and Italy side that had one of the greatest defences ever. If he was always in a 2v1 maybe his outlook would be a bit different. AWB emerges with the ball more often than not as well so his tackling is fine.

Saying TAA is a better defender than AWB because he is a better player overall is like saying Iniesta is a better tackler than Arturo Vidal because Iniesta is better overall player. Incorrect.

09 Aug 2020 15:55:31
What do you think about Reece James compared to AAT AWB ed.

{Ed001's Note - miles behind the pair of them right now as he simply can't defend and has struggled in recent weeks. Very good on the ball, but I am not convinced he is a full-back, I think he is wasted there. He often plays in midfield and I see his future there unless he makes massive strides in the defensive aspects of the game.}

09 Aug 2020 15:59:52
Ed001 - just on Chilwell having his head up his backside - I could be totally wrong but I get that impression from a lot of the Leicester players, including the manager.
Rodgers, Chilwell, Schmeichel, Maddison, Perez - they all seem to think they’re much better than they are.

{Ed001's Note - it does seem that way, but Chilwell to the point he is starting to pose disciplinary issues.}

09 Aug 2020 17:56:18
Trent is literally better than Wan Bissaka in every defensive department except recovery pace and tackling.

He's better positionally, better with anticipation, better in the air, better at decision making, better awareness of what's around him, better communication, far less error prone, better at retaining possession under pressure etc. He's so far ahead mentally and technically and not that far behind in terms of pace or ball winning.

He's a better defender and a better attacker in my opinion. Even if Maldini didn't say that by the way, it doesn't mean it's not true. I'll agree to disagree mate. You are entitled to like your own clubs player.

09 Aug 2020 18:15:42

TAA is a much better player than AWB. I have been saying that all along. I am just saying AWB is better defensively than TAA. AWB also gets to show his defensive qualities far more than TAA because of the difference in the two teams' style and qualities.

We just agree to disagree then mate. You too are allowed to like your team's player more than others'.

09 Aug 2020 19:50:20
HMB, I agree with a lot of the stuff you are saying about AWB but like I have said, AWB still has a ways to go to get to TAA's level and I believe he can get there BUT with Ole at the wheel, it ain't going to happen. Cheers, mate.
