Whether or not he gets the nod, I think it's fair to say that the Rangers job is Stevie G's audition for the Liverpool job post-Klopp.
While I'm not debating whether he deserves it or not, it is nice to see Gerrard's Rangers set up and try to play like mini-Liverpool! I know it isn't easy to replicate our high intensity and organized chaos, but you can see Gerrard is clearly inspired by it and is trying to replicate it. The fullbacks are bombing forwardand being deliberately creative, like Robbo and Trent, albeit against a poor opponent. We'll see how consistent the team is over the course of the season.

I know what you mean but I don’t think you’d find a single Rangers fan, or indeed Gerrard himself, that sees it that way.
It is all about preventing Celtic getting 10 in a row, and Gerrard finds himself at the cusp of history.
It’s a huge challenge in itself, regardless of any other possible future considerations.

I think Lijnders will get the nod before SG.

12 Aug 2020 22:14:05
I hope you're right Longthing76.

12 Aug 2020 22:40:04
Yup longthing, I think he'll be our next manager mate.

Stevie g has done nothing with rangers. He is no where near klopps level great player he was he is not a great manager, teams constantly loose focus under pressure, poor tactics, and him speaking to people after games are often terrible. He won't be lfc manager in my life time!

12 Aug 2020 22:44:16
Definitely Lijnders👍.

12 Aug 2020 22:50:58
I hope neither get the LFC job. This isn't a job for potential managers to cut their teeth. When Klopp leaves go out and get the very best manager we can. That's my opinion.

12 Aug 2020 22:57:28
It's possible Ljinders will get the job ahead of Stevie G. But can you say "definitely "? How can you know that right now?
Either way, I was only commenting on the style of play. I know Gerrard's credentials as a potential Liverpool manager is a big issue on this forum, and it's anyone's guess right now who succeeds Klopp.

Really have to stop being sentimental when it comes to great players becoming managers. I can't think of a single great player, aside from Johann Cruyff, that had as great a career as manager or coach. The species doesn't exist yet. You could perhaps argue for Dalglish, or maybe Beckenbauer even, but I would say the managing careers were too short. At best you have so-so players who can become great managers (Guardiola, Klopp, Ancellotti, Capello, Conte, Pochettino for example) . And there's a long list of great players who were failures or just so-so at best as managers; Maradona, Shearer, Matthaus, Gullit, Van Basten, and others. Even players from that ManU dynasty have failed miserably; Neville, Scholes and Keane. Maybe Vieira and Lampard will prove me wrong. Who knows. Gerrard is not exactly doing wonders with Rangers.

Clearly you need a completely different skill set to become a great manager from being a great player. Knowing how to kick a ball well does not translate into coaching or managing others to do it just as well, it seems.

He want succeed klopp - gerrard . End of.

The reason Manchester United and Chelsea Will not challenge over the next few years is down to frank and ole being woeful managers, I’d hate to see us follow suit and hiring due to emotion. It would be great if Gerrard could come in and win it all but I don’t know if that would be the case. But I’d hate to hire him purely because he’s Gerrard. I would not like to follow the same vein as Chelsea and Manchester United where regardless of the players they’ll always be limited by bang average managers.

13 Aug 2020 02:15:59
I think Ole and Lampard have done a solid job so far. They obviously have a lot of help behind the scenes but both have achieved a top 4 finish and decent cup runs with squads that are often mocked on here (particularly Man U) .
Im not sure what more is expected of them as they are unlikely to be dominating Liverpool and City just yet.

I wonder will JK have any input into help choosing his successor? Sailor Jerry totally agree I also hope SG doesn't get the job for simply being SG and Noski change definitely for hopefully.

{Ed0666's Note - I hope pep L gets the managers role but hasn’t Klopp gone on record saying he’ll do all he can to get Gerard the job? Hopefully it was all heat of the moment comments. I think pep deserves it to be honest for various reasons but he’s had a go at being a number 1 and wasn’t successful maybe he’s more suited to a number 2.

13 Aug 2020 09:59:53
Wasn't Mike Phelan Fergie's number 2? He didn't have the best of times as the manager of a team at Hull City I seem to recall! Doesn't always work out for the best.

To be quite honest, I don't want to start thinking about Klopp's replacement. It upsets me too much!

IMO, SG has done nor shown nothing to prove he is ready to take the LFC job so far so not buying the "He is auditioning for the LFC job after Klopp leaves" schtick and if he is, he is doing very poorly right now.

Pep Ljinders on the other hand, has shown he can do the job cos Klopp leans heavily on him and is well-immersed in the day to day preparation of tactics, training sessions and football analysis of the team. Most of all, he has the respect of the players, I can bet.

Now, I am not saying Pep should get the job based on the above alone. I am just saying that if we were to get a young manager in to replace Klopp, would it not be better to promote from within with a guy who is Klopp's right hand man instead of a club legend who IMO, could make things worse cos he is too involved in the emotional side of all things LFC? After all, We all saw what happened to King Kenny in his second spell where IMO, that clouded his judgment on certain issues.

13 Aug 2020 07:58:30
I didn't know Klopp said that Ed0666.I think the reason why some people would be against going"sentimental"and giving SG the job is because the last two times it didn't work out to well for us. Even though both times it was for very different reasons.

{Ed0666's Note - I can distinctly remember Klopp saying he’d do all he can to get Gerard the Liverpool job after he leaves and remember thinking at the time it was a silly thing to say for many reasons
