I have just read an article about a twitter thread on wijnaldum.
It goes into detail about how his stats are apparently in the bottom 30% of all players in Europe and how he is in the bottom 1% of tackles.
God knows where these stats are from or if all of it is correct, which I doubt highly.
Article does go on to say you can work statistics to say what you want.
Crazy article.

I might be worried about that if Wijnaldum's only role in the team was to tackle people.

Stats are for lazy people.

Wij started off good for Liverpool. He then dipped slightly For a season and so did Henderson. But then around the time we signed Naby, they propelled to an elite level. Big time players.

Bottom 30% of all players in Europe? Does that mean the European Cup? Because I'm pretty sure he'd be the best player at tranmere.

Some statistics are very reliable. But they can be manipulated. Just listen to any party political broadcast by the conservatives. A progressive Conservative is like a motorbike with four wheels.

Anyway its not about stats, it's about football. It isn't a science, it's closer to art than science. And we all know gini's worth.

23 Aug 2020 04:23:10
This is why I never pay attention to stats.

23 Aug 2020 06:14:43
I reckon Lionel Messi and Joe Hart would have put in less tackles than Gini. Stats in isolation are as useful as a chocolate teapot.

23 Aug 2020 08:42:15
Wijnaldum is currently 4/ 1, at Sky Bet, to join Barcelona, so I wouldn't worry, just yet.
If it looks more likely that he'll move the 4/ 1 will shorten.

To me he’s a modern day Ronnie Whelan in that he goes under the radar, but his work in the team is vastly underrated. Just ask Busquets and Arthur if he’s any good. They’re apparently still looking for him after losing him at Anfield.

96% of stats are irrelevant.

23 Aug 2020 09:50:42
Aye he is crap with those stats. Might as well just try to keep him then 👍. Sign a new contract Gini!

23 Aug 2020 09:51:36
78% of states are made up.

23 Aug 2020 11:01:55
Like Delaware.

23 Aug 2020 11:09:13
Decent stat

Reminder that 16% of Gini Wijnaldum’s goals for Liverpool have been scored in European Cup semi finals.

23 Aug 2020 11:36:38
The human eye blinks an average of 4,200,000 times a year. Real relevant :) .

Spot on, Robbie. Stats can be manipulated to say whatever you want them to say in order to fit your narrative. Also, did that stat take into account that Gini fulfills a different role for Liverpool than he does with Holland where he is a dynamic B2B midfielder who scores hat-tricks? Did they use his Holland stats to crunch the numbers in their analysis? Did they take what Mou, Souness and Kompany had to say about Gini after we pumped City 3-1 at Anfield this season, lavishing him with praise? Not sure that happened.

IMO, I maintain that stats are for lazy people esp. if one does not use context (Gini plays diff. roles for club and country) . Therefore, keep an open mind, use your eyes and trust what you are seeing. And IMO, anyone doing that and is honest, will see that Gini is a brilliant footballer and highly rated by top managers/ players in the game. I guess these guys are mugs too, yeah? Stats can kick rocks.

I wonder how many tackles did vvd make and where he ranks in tackle scheme of things.
I can bet he won't be in top 100.

23 Aug 2020 12:31:52
Like I say, Gini gets in any top side’s midfield as he’s a great balance of hard work, physicality, intelligence and technique, he’s also not an egotistical type as he’s prepared to sacrifice his own game for the greater good of the team. I’m not surprised Barcelona would be interested as he’s a genuinely top class player.

23 Aug 2020 12:55:27
Ignoring the stats, he is pretty anonymous in 90% of the games we play. Never plays any decisive passes, doesn’t get many goal scoring chances and can’t finish the ones he does. Yes he’s had a few great performances for us in big games, and his shuttling and ball retention in these games is usually fantastic, but in your average prem game every week he is a passenger the majority of the time. Definitely think it’s one position we should be looking to improve on. Now I actually think Keita is more than good enough to do that, but if we were to sell Wijnaldum and sign Thiago for vaguely similar fees, ignoring the wages, I think we should do it. Would develop our play style and give us more unpredictability in midfield. Teams should always be looking to develop how they play otherwise they will get figured out sooner rather than later.

23 Aug 2020 14:38:56
To the people that say stats are irrelevant refer to the fact that we sign players based on those very same stats. One player that comes to mind is mo salah. They are very relevant in the modern game.

23 Aug 2020 16:21:28
DK97 to say he’s pretty anonymous is, with due respect, unfair to what he brings to the team and how we function, our midfield is set up to enable the fullbacks to get forward and create, to say he’s easily replaceable is wholly disingenuous. As neither of Keita or Thiago have the selflessness, discipline or physical toughness that Wijnaldum has. He is a water carrier, not a glamorous role, but all the best sides have them in their midfield, a player who does simple things well to keep the ball moving, to protect the defence and suffocate the space for the opponents. That’s what Gini does and I’m sorry for you that you can’t see that.

23 Aug 2020 21:04:10
6Times we already have that in Henderson though, and he affects the game more. Having 2 of those players with a defensive midfield behind them is why often we find it so difficult to break down teams who sit back, and why some of our play is very boring to watch. And there seems to be a myth around both Keita and Thiago that they don’t work hard and don’t contribute defensively. If you have watched either you will know that they do.
