Yeah, but look how much money we had to spend last summer in order to win the league, you can’t have a quiet summer and still be successful, oh hang on a minute.

That is complete non sense. Last year most of our rivals did not properly strengthen. This year looks to be very different. Stagnating is not good from a motivation perspective let alone improvement.
We have weaknesses that need to be addressed if we want to remain at the top.

Err Powerlfc, that is patently false. Utd spent 200m if you include Bruno on Bruno, Maguire and AWB. City spent 134m on Rodri, Cancelo and one more whose name escapes me. And Chelsea even tho they had a transfer ban, still signed Kovacic Last summer and already signed Pulisic in Jan of 2019.

Who did we sign? Adrian off his sofa, and 2 kids in Van Den Berg and Elliott and then signed Minamino after the league was pretty much won in Jan. All these clubs outspent us last season so the idea that they did not properly strengthen is pure fiction. Revisionist history, really.

Also, what makes you think we are stagnating? Cos we are not signing who you want? We signed LB cover that we desperately needed yet we are stagnating. Football is not an exact science and signing big guarantees you nothing, as City, Utd and even Chelsea have shown last season. Trust the process.

I mean, United paid a world record fee for a defender and then brought out the chequebook again for Fernandes in January, Arsenal broke their transfer record for Pepe, Chelsea paid big money for Pulisic, Man City yet again splurged to satisfy Pep's kink for fullbacks and spent well over £100m overall, Spurs broke their transfer record for Ndombele, and you're still going to say our rivals didn't strengthen last season?

Looking forward to seeing Powers response to this thread 🤣🤣🤣.

02 Sep 2020 19:04:03
jkh1983, thanks for sharing those numbers cos I forgot about Angelino and Pepe whose fee alone, was enuff to fund 3 players for us right now. I did not even mention Spurs' spending.

Every club outspent us by a chasm in some cases YET we have people making up nonsense to support a figment of their imagination. Pathetic, really.

02 Sep 2020 19:19:17
You forgot to mention Arsenal, who spent around £100 million on Pepe, Tierney and Luiz and managed to finish 3 places lower than the season before.

02 Sep 2020 19:28:08
Ye I didn't count them as rivals Thunderbird lol, Madness isn't it Red Meister.

I did not refer to spending. I specifically stated "properly strengthened". I am aware of the amounts spent by Man Utd, Arsenal and Man City last year. Wasting money on the Donkey CB called Maguire or one-trick pony Pepe was not properly spending.

My concern is that this year those teams seem to be in the process of properly addressing their weaknesses.

Man City will add a dominant CB (likely Koulibaly), added a left-footed CB and an exciting forward and that without the possibly arrival of Messi.

Man Utd added a very good midfielder and are actively working to add Sancho (or equivalent) . Club has stated their clear intention to strengthen and spend the cash.

Arsenal are doing smart business addressing their weaknesses.

My point is that it is naive to think that we could go two years in a row without adding and expect to walk (or remain the key favorite) to retain the league again.

We need in my opinion and in order of importance:
- an option to the front 3 - e. g., Sarr
- Thiago if Gini leaves
- CB

Again this is coming from a concerned Reds fan. And for the record, my biggest concern is to add a genuine option to the front 3. Ismaila Sarr (or equivalent) would make me feel more at ease.

YNWA.

Give it a rest, Powerlfc. Go read your own post again and you will see why you got all the responses you got. Cheers, man.

OP said our rivals didn't strengthen properly. which means they spent loads and it didn't work out. which means that there is every chance that the money spent this window doesn't determine who wins the title, just yet!

03 Sep 2020 02:11:25
But power the reason those clubs didn't strenghten despite signing big money names is because they had to gamble in the market to adress where they saw weak points in the squad. You can't use hindsight to say that last summer you were not concerned by that spending yet this summer me overly worried despite the business actually being of less high profile from those clubs. To say ake is a top CB or a young unproven Spanish winger make city stronger despite them now without kompany, David Silva and Leroy sane since they last were a better team than us. To think arsenal have addressed their weak areas simply by signing an unproven defender from French league or that United have dramatically become a threat simply by adding a young player from Holland who plays strongest in the position that Bruno fernandes and Paul pogba already can offer. All those rubbish signings you mention last summer are still in those rivals squad along with their ageing best players or the likes of vertonghen, Danny rose, erikson, kompany, d. silva, Leroy sane, Pedro, willian, hazard, lukaku available anymore despite being key players when they were closer to competing with us. The fact we are not needing to chop and change with new faces is proof that we are better set up to have an improved performing season to others. Bayern and PSG were in CL final with both lineups not really including any big money marquee players they added last summer. Juve had pretty much the same domestic success without even the marquee addition of de ligt being needed and Madrid too despite hazard not improving them. The runners up like inter Milan, Barcelona were the big spenders apparently getting stronger last summer. Dortmund added many big names yet never closed the gap to bayern in Germany. West ham, Everton and Aston villa never improved despite well spending above others. Atalanta, Leicester, Sevilla, enjoyed strong seasons without much disrupting of their players as an example. We've just come off our best ever season and period of strong European joy with this squad breaking records under the world's best manager and you think that we're destined to stagnate and not be able to use this same group of players who have proved undoubtedly over last 2.5 years to be the ultimate mentality monsters that every other club and supporter would dream of having.

Don't be so sure the grass can be greener when it's unlikely to ever be as green as we have it now.

{Ed0666's Note - did you miss the Paragraph class at school mate?

03 Sep 2020 03:12:37
Red Meister - Let’s remain courteous to each other please. I stated an opinion. You clearly disagree and that is fine with me. I re-read my initial message and do not find an inconsistency. In any case, have a nice day sir.

{Ed0666's Note - kill him with kindness mate. Well played.

Powell, additions to the first team in the last year are tsami, mino and curtis Jones and neco Williams. It may not cost 100mil but that's not the point. Those 4 could make 100mil if we sold them this January though, possibly.

You only go out and sign 4 or 5 players if you're not happy with the team. When you are happy you don't need to sign players, or you bring in 1 or 2. Well, we have brought in 1, mino feels like a new signing too. In my mind that's 2 new players. And I highly suspect we'll see thiago signing.
So that's 2 strong additions to an already strong team. And taki who only played minutes last year. We snapped him up for this season, not last.

Tsami
Taki
Thiago.

That's 3 strong additions. It might not cost 100mil but neither did salah, robbo and aoc.
