Klopp apparently having crunch talks with GinI to discuss him staying or leaving. What's people's thoughts on him staying and leaving in January for free? Seems the likeliest option for me.

Agree2 Disagree0

For me personally it I makes no sense to let him leave on a free
Sell now or offer contract which will see him sign
Maybe he just wants to leave which you also have to respect
We can cope without him of course but I really hope he signs and stay at the club
I’m a big fan of him and thinks he suits us perfectly.

09 Sep 2020 11:51:02
He can't leave in January for free, he is under contract. He can sign a pre-contract agreement to join any non-English club on January 1st,
taking effect on July 1st.

09 Sep 2020 11:54:49
He is in italy not even in UK!

09 Sep 2020 12:14:47
Served the club well, we need more in midfield though now, we can only buy if we sell and he has a bit of value to him, sell him now.

09 Sep 2020 12:40:08
Do NOT, sell Gini and bring nobody in.

09 Sep 2020 12:47:05
I’d like him to stay but if he wants to leave I’d let him he has done well for us we owe him that much. As for needing more in midfield I see jones an mini getting lots of game time this year and if Naby stays fit I think he will do well this year too so not to fussed.

09 Sep 2020 13:11:36
How do you see things developing with Giini Ed?

{Ed001's Note - likely to go I would think.}

09 Sep 2020 13:13:32
I would keep him for another year regardless he sign a new contract or not. Maybe in a year's time, more funds are available, and better replacement can be brought in. I'm not entirely convinced with Thiago.

09 Sep 2020 13:13:53
Let him go, we have so many midfielders as it is, Thiago will be an upgrade and most importantly we don’t know what finances will be like in a years time; we can’t afford to let players of his quality leave for free.

09 Sep 2020 13:21:14
Sure the club needs money so obviously we need to sell Gini.

09 Sep 2020 13:28:50
happy to sell if Gini wants to go. not keen on a drawn out transfer saga tho, so hope that it's decisive whichever way it goes. If he goes, I would be ok sticking with the first-team midfielders currently on the books.

09 Sep 2020 13:43:49
He will be a massive loss if he goes but if we can get Thiago in as his replacement then we will still be in a very strong position.

09 Sep 2020 14:02:45
Thiago is a very good player but he made 20 league starts last season. Hasn't a great injury record overall. He's going to replace a guy who's never injured and played the most minutes of our midfield last season. No point having a technically better player if he's missing 15 or so league games in a season. I'd much rather keep gini tbh. If he wants to go fair enough.

09 Sep 2020 14:04:01
IMO, You NEVER let a player's contract run down. If he won't sign a new deal going into his final season, (and I love Gini to death) sell him and get what you can get for him and then, keep it moving.

09 Sep 2020 14:22:07
I agree with Barry and Red Meister, we need money so can't let him go on a free next year.

09 Sep 2020 14:51:29
The owners are business men and very good business men at that. I'm merely guessing but i would imagine that they would not look at it as good business sense to pay someone 100k a week for the next 12 months knowing they will then leave for free when they could cash in now and get around 12-15 million plus the saving in wages.

09 Sep 2020 14:52:31
Arsenal were terrible for letting contracts run down and it can effect transfer business massively. So I don't want us to start following the same route.

If the lad wants a new venture we have to sell him why he still has some value in monetary terms. Then we can use some of the funds bought in to buy someone who wants to be here and fight for their place.

09 Sep 2020 15:00:10
Simple, if we can get a stack of dosh for him, let him go. If other teams are playing hardball on the price, keep him.
He doesn't actually go for free anyhow as we will get a full years work out of him before next July which we wouldn't if we sold him now.

09 Sep 2020 15:27:15
We let Emre Chan’s contract run down.

That was good business by LFC.

09 Sep 2020 15:33:06
Gents if Gini does go it doesn’t mean that Thiago is a certain, Ed explained yesterday it’s doubtful he joins unless we stump up what they are asking. More likely Grujic becomes his replacement I would say.

09 Sep 2020 17:00:43
TG, no it was not, IMO. Emre Can was haggling with LFC all the way till Jan of 2018 where he could sign a pre contract with Juve. Was that done on purpose by Can and his team? I don't know but we should have sold him and got some dosh for him. IMO, you never let a player's contract run down and let him go for free. You get whatever is left of his value by selling him and then, keep it moving.

09 Sep 2020 17:46:16
If you ask me he wants to leave.
A few weeks ago I posted after watching a training vid. The boys were meeting in Austria after holidays. gini comes into lobby and gives vvd a hug and then looks extremely sheepish just as Hendo is about to turn and welcome him. I remember thinking "somethings gone on or is going on" and the next day daretodream posted about the koeman barcalona wjinaldum connection and my instinct made sense (in my mind)

Gini is played as a cm in our system. His preferred position is AM.
Barca may not be at their usual lofty level but are still a huge club. He will be one of their main men. I think he feels a little undervalued by Liverpool. I remember after the Barcelona win he said in on pitch interview that he was "really angry at the manager" for not starting him.

I love the guy, and I think he'll be a massive loss for us. One many may not realise until its too late. I'd rather have him for another year and lose him for free than sell for the reported 15mil now.
I get what you're saying Johncrow mate, but I'd pay 15mil just to have him another year. By then our finances may be in better shape and we will be more able to find a decent cm to replace.

Can we get anyone on his level for 15mil? No.

09 Sep 2020 18:05:39
Look at it from the other side then, would you as a business pay 15 million for gini for one season?

09 Sep 2020 19:01:30
Let's go forward to next summer and look backwards. The cost of keeping Wijnaldum for a year is 5 million; his salary. The notional gain of selling him now is 15 million plus the salary saved of 5 million, which leaves you with 20 million. That's identical to taking a player for a year and giving him 20 million, like say for a loan and no rights to him at the end of the year. Are you sure we can't get a better player for 20 million for a year?

It worked with Can because the numbers and values were lower. It's madness to let higher value players play out their contracts.

09 Sep 2020 20:31:44
It's not 20mil aray, because by your calculation we would need to factor in the new players salary too, so around 25mil

And you have to take into account the fact that gini is settled in this team. That's worth more than money. It's worth points.

We don't have much money right now. And I don't think we can someone as good as him for 15mil.

All this said I think we will see less of gini this season than any other since he joined. And it's because I think keita is going to play a lot more this year. I know many have lost patience, including ed01. While I don't blame you at all given the price tag and 2 years. Some players take longer to settle and naby strikes me as that sort. I think he'll be massive this year. And I actually think gini knows this.

09 Sep 2020 21:36:10
Robbie, of course, Wiji will have to be replaced if he leaves. But nobody knows by whom; could be an internal change whereby the salary would be less or an external purchase where the salary could be much higher. I didn't mention it because it would cloud up my argument and cause confusion. But I still get the feeling you didn't get my main point. Which was, whether it is 20 or 25 Million, it's a cost for only one year and that's why I used the example of the loan. It's not the same as a player purchase for 20 Million or 25 Million which gets amortized for the duration of the contract (divided up over 3-5 years depending) . 20 or 25 Million for a player for one year only, is an obscene amount of money.

09 Sep 2020 22:57:01
No, I did understand aray. And I know what you mean. We need to be flawless to win the league though. I don't see us getting anyone of his level for 15mil.

If Barcelona want him so much (which it seems they do) we should tell them we want 40mil, take it or leave it. And then buy thiago. If they back off then he leaves for free and hopefully we are in a better situation financially. I know that sounds a bit daft (let our players leave for free and hope we're better off financially) but you know what I mean.

I have this niggling worry that if gini joins barca, he'll somehow persuade virgil to follow next year.

10 Sep 2020 05:27:46
If we lose Gini this year, we had better hope his replacement slots in perfectly AND can cope with a new league/ new country AND is as trouble-free and injury free as Wijnaldum. Otherwise, you can keep your financial comparisons. Why care about saving a few million if we can't guarantee Gini’s replacement will be as good or better. Keep him as long as he is under contract, i say.
