Seen a few posts about gomez needing to be dropped and matip put in after today.
I think people are being far too harsh, it's the first game back with no real fitness or pre season and he was still stronger than van dijk and trent and half the issues he had were because he was running round covering the huge gaps they were leaving.

We've been saying for weeks what a tough little game today was going to be, and we get our panties in a twist when they give us a game. They were good.

I thought gomez looked pretty good at times. His pace is a real asset.

Let's see:

1st goal: Trent gets done on our right flank.
2nd goal: Overconfidence from van Dijk, he should've just cleared it.
3rd goal: Midfielders fail to track Klich. something which was happening all game to the point where I think they were intentionally leaving him to the back 4.

Liverpool fans: All Gomez' fault!

Gomez was no worse defensively than any other member of the back 4 in the first half and was the best of the bunch in the 2nd. I think some people have just developed a fixation with him because of his poor performances on re-start.

What Gomez offers us though is the ability to play a high line designed to stop attacks as his recovery pace let's us take a position higher and use the offside trap to success. Leeds had a couple of counters where they broke our midfield and tried the killer ball but we caught them offside 6 or 7 times to stop any threat. Matip isn't as effective in that type of defence. Errors by Trent and VVD for their goals meant that Gomez had to move out of his position to cover which he shouldn't be criticised for. He was far from perfect today but when both the players on either side of you are having a bad day it's not possible that you can then have a great game.

Summed it up perfectly, Something-Red. There is always someone that has to take the blame so let's blame Gomez whereas he was IMO, actually better than VVD who performed poorly.

We played a high line and they punished us for it. So whilst Gomez allows us to play a high line, it means one long ball could cause us real issues and it did. Leeds had done their work home and scored 3 against us, just imagine what it’s going be like when we play City or Chelsea!

Yeah and in fact after VVD had to go out of position and Leeds players freely powering into the box he actually reacted quickly to get into central area to cover as best option possible which was a hopeless situation anyway yet he's taking stick for our issues just because he's seen as the weaker of the 4. It's like when Firmino isn't banging in goals everybody calls for origi to get picked even though he's never the better option over firmino even when he's not at his best. Gomez is far better than matip and fans would scream for Gomez to come back after a few games no doubt. There's always a scapegoat that unfairly gets overblamed at Liverpool. Henderson took it for years, so too did lovren and lallana when the likes of emre can or Daniel sturridge never faced criticism despite having much less care and effort in those years. Last season AOC had more poor performances than keita had and I can't think of any games where he was MOTM whereas even keita offered up a few of those performances. But it's always going to be keita to blame and never fair treatment to AOC who's a very likeable character but on the field he's not giving more consistency than keita. Look at how all I've seen is Gomez, keita and firmino being moaned about when VVD, Henderson and mane were arguably worse in defence midfield and attack.
