The "why Jota over Werner" question is fairly simple in my mind.

- Werner would have wanted to be a starter
- Werner's wages would have been astronomical in comparison to Jota's
- RBL would have likely required us to put a significant amount up front, whilst it seems we have managed to negotiate a rather favourable set of payment terms with Wolves. Remember, a lot of the issue is cash flow, not FFP

I am not in the know, obviously, just trying to put some sensible reasoning behind why we went with Jota, which I am elated by. With Klopp guiding him, I see him being an excellent addition to the squad.

Spot on, Cotsi. RBL wanted ALL the money upfront, reportedly. Also, Werner wanted 270k in wages, allegedly. If any of this is true then yeah, Chelsea are welcome to him cos they can do that cos they really needed him to upgrade their attack. Our highest earner is Mo Salah is on 220k a week and is one of the best forwards on the planet so 270k for Werner is a non-starter, IMO.

Werner does not upgrade our attack. He would have complimented it for sure and would not have been a consistent starter. At 270k a week, Werner should be starting every week and scoring every other week. That would not have happened here so it is only normal we pulled out.

Just seen this online. If true tremendous business and well done to the owners and money men at the club. For me the signing of Thiago and Jota were pushed from Klopp and it shows what a great working relationship FSG have with him as I don’t believe another manager would have been backed like this in these times.

If we signed Timo Werner, Lewis and Sarr this summer we would have had to pay £120m upfront.

Instead and to the boo's of the FSG OUT boys Tsimikas, Thiago and Jota were signed paying £20m upfront.

The club’s patience and sound business practice saved us £100m this summer. We're not in debt or had to borrow at high interest rates to buy for the sake. This is how our owners have run the club.

Rm how do you know Werner wouldn’t have been a consistent starter. Did Klopp tell you that 😉.

Both bench players. To be honest I think we’ve overpaid a bit for jota, but I do like him a lot. Loves a goal vs man utd too.

Jk
Can I ask how you know that Werner, Sarr and Lewis would have to be paid up front? I am guessing you are taking a punt there. Also, money has to be paid. Only paying a small amount now (if true), is just kicking the can down the road. It still needs to be paid.

Yes Irish, but the issue is right now. We don’t have the money so this was the only way to buy quality players for the squad. If it keeps us at the top, it’s worth it. I personally think, one, or both of Mané and Salah are gone next summer. That will pay for these transfers plus replacements for them. That’s just my opinion though, I could be talking complete waffle.

I think Ed002 has already said that Jota would want to be a starter, or words to that effect.

Wasn’t a starter at wolves so I highly doubt he will expect, or have been promised, to be one now.

Touche, JK. Seriously tho, I said Werner would not have been a consistent starter due to the fee and wages considered. Anyone on those wages should be starting every game consistently. That would not have happened with the front 3 we have. Anyone can see that. And YES, Klopp did tell me that, lol.

Diogo Jota, 34 games in the PL, 7 as sub, Europa League 14 games last season. Seems like a starter to me Costi 👍.

Irish Rover, RBL apparently made it clear they wanted a massive chunk of the fee up front, they weren’t interested instalments, as for Sarr, I heard we were quoted £50m by Watford (they want at least as much as they got for Richarlison and they don’t need to sell) and given the Pozzi’s are still peeved at us about Zielinski, they probably would have also asked for a large up front payment too.
