After the battering we got off AV few weeks back when hendo was injured and VVD didn’t exactly step up to hendo captain levels. It’s one area that does concern me going forward. I know we have Milner but I wouldn’t say he grabs the team by the scruf of the neck and drives them on like Jordan. Plus Milner is near the end of he’s time with us.
My question to eds1 is Is there anyone at the team who you think could step up to be a great captain when Jordan hangs up he’s cap. Also if you could sign anyone out if current players in the world to be our captain who would it be

{Ed001's Note - maybe Trent could grow into the captaincy, but I am not convinced we have any outstanding candidates at the club from what I have seen. But that goes for football in general, there are so few leaders around any more, they are all so robotic just following orders from their coaches that none really stand out as a potential captain for the team.}

Very very harsh on Milner Longthing. Up until the last 2 years or so he was the main voice in the dressing room. When Klopp needed the extra input it mainly came from Milner. Henderson has grown and grown into a great captain but a lot was learnt from Milner.

Mane in my professional opinion would be a good captain. Not only leads by example but is also vocal towards teammates.

I think Jordan is a perfect captain so it’s a lot to live up to I just don’t think Milner has the same affect on the team as Jordan does.

I agree KloppBoom, Robertson for me. I could see Trent growing into the role, but Robertson would be my choice.

Robbo definitely the loudest after Hendo and you would imagine animated in the dressing room too. Honestly top class player too, had a mare in the city thumping but one of our best players since then.

I'm with you guys on Robbo. Fearless and merciless, the perfect type of guy to lead you forward. Maybe a little too impulsive and gung-ho now, but I place that on his age and with another year or two, a more stable maturity would probably settle in. I absolutely love that he doesn't take sh*t from anybody (including the best player on the Planet) . If you look at his interviews, he's always smiling while talking; a young boy still in love with the game, and plays it that way. And historically, LFC has not done too badly with Scots as Captains (not that that means much anyway) .

Andy Robertson. Humble, got an edge, vocal, a driving player.

I think people are being a bit harsh on van djike. We didn't lose that match solely because of him. We weren't patient after going 1 down, then were even more erratic at 2. Then it snowballed as we were so open. We tried to do what we did to arsenal when they scored. 30 seconds later 1 1. Five minutes later 2 1.

Robbo’ s a good shout but not sure his position is a good position for a Captain re communication to whole team and he’s head strong which is great for bombing up and down the left but sometimes captains need cool heads as well. Just throwing couple of things in to consider.,

For me I’m quite surprised we seem desperate for a strong captain. From the outside looking in over the last 2 seasons it would look like we have a team full of leaders. Players that lead from the front and take responsibility for their own actions and performances. Hendo unfortunately has missed a few games through injury in that time and we’ve won them no problem. Yes we’ve lost a couple of games when he’s not played but I don’t think it’s because of his leadership but maybe more we’ve missed him as a footballer. I don’t think him being on the pitch causes other players to raise their performance by 10% because if that was the case what’s the point in Klopp being on the sideline. However i do think Robbo is a great shout. That lad plays with his head on his sleeve and leaves nothing on the pitch. Another 2 good shouts would be Mo and Mane. Both lead by example and to be honest I’d give it one of them as more of a political move. Captains of clubs are put on a pedestal and don’t normally tend to look for moves away which both have been rumoured to have.

I disagree about lb being a poor position for a captain. Its not the best position perhaps, but it's possible. You bring up a good point about Robbo being hot-headed though warmachine. He is Scotland captain though, so it wouldn't be new to him.

Mane is capt. of Senegal so he would be a good shout too BUT I would rather he lead from the front like he is doing now rather than have to do that and worry about others.

Spot on, Nevada. That simply makes no sense to me. Oh n btw, Cafu (a RB) was capt. of Brazil for near a decade. Being a FB did not stop him nor Maldini from being legends of he game so why would it stop Robbo from performing at a high level?

Is the role 'captain' that important these days? I mean having leaders as such definitely can help, but I'm unconvinced that the "captain's armband" is as significant as it once was, probably in part down to what you said Ed about players being more robotic. Not only does that thin the herd in terms of captains, but it arguably makes a captain a lot less influential anyway. I think Henderson is a good exception to this rule, but if you look at most clubs few of them have any sort of captain that compares to the influence of the ones of yesteryear (Roy Keane being one such example) .

For me Robbos personality on the pitch is infectious. Although this leads him to dive in early at times and leaves him vulnerable It definitely marks him out as a player who’s on pitch actions will result in teammates following suit. Gerrard led by action rather than words and I believe Robbo falls into that category.
