A question for ed1 please. a mate of mine said recently that the greatest thing steven Gerrard ever did for liverpool was the slip against Chelsea cos we"d have won the league that year otherwise and Roger's would never have been sacked after delivering the title and klopp would be at man utd now. i was wondering what your opinion is. thamks for all the hard work you and all the Ed's do it's a fantastic site.

{Ed001's Note - that slip didn't cost the title, so it is nonsense. We blew it when we tried to improve our goal difference against Palace. The slip made no real difference. As for Klopp being at Man Utd, I doubt it, not the way they are set up. He would have taken one look at the way they are run and stayed well clear. Not sure where he would have ended up, but United is not set up to work his way. Maybe Chelsea would have been a more suitable option?}

The slip made no real difference? Are you sure? It meant we weren’t ahead in the title race anymore and we then had to chase goals.

{Ed001's Note - yes I am sure.}

The spoofer Rodgers cost us the league 3 up at palace and wanted more 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’ll nvr forget that or the team he put out against real 😭.

Yeh. Crystanbul was a catastrophe that cost us. Thanks bodgers.

I disagree Ed. If we hadn't lost to Chelsea goal difference wouldn't have mattered. When we played Palace we were miles behind City on goal difference, so had to go for it.

{Ed001's Note - we didn't have to go for it. It was naivety to do so.}

Spot on, Ed01. A season does not come down to one game or one mistake. That is just ridiculous stuff that many peoplrliketo believe. All thru that season, I never believed we would win the league until it actually happened cos our team was built on quicksand with no solid foundations.

There were so many holes in that team that I simply was not buying the hype. Our defence was crap, we had a tiny squad, relied on pretty much one player and our GK was suspect. Add the fact that BR in his infinite wisdom, decided to try to go for a superior GD instead of securing the win at 3-0 (one of his several mistakes that season) only made things even worse. As for Klopp joining Utd, I read somewhere that he rejected them outright for the very reasons Ed mentioned.

If we had beaten Chelsea then even that draw to
Palace would have still seen us win the league by 1 point.

03 Nov 2020 22:56:17
If he didn’t slip we would have won the league unfortunately.

It was naive of Rogers to set the team up the way he did against Chelsea. The writing was on the wall that Jose would sit back and just let them try and catch us on the counter as he did several games prior against quality opposition. We did not need to win that game and we left ourselves exposed several times chasing the three pts when 1 would of done nicely. Rogers not the slip cost us.

Ridiculous to say Gerrards slip cost us the title. Ridiculous to say losing to Chelsea cost us the title. Or Palace.
We lost that year because we didn't get more points than Man C over the course of the season.
If we had won every game then lost to Chelsea you can justifiably say that Gerrards slip was the reason we missed out. Otherwise there are a multitude of factors throughout the season that contributed to us not getting enough points. Dumping failure on Gerrards shoulders is just scapegoating.

I cannot comment much on the set up against Chelsea and if was the right one or not. We were probably a tad unlucky to have lost the game. I was too emotional to really pay much attention to whether it was a tactical error. But, I think we did chase goals against Crystal Palace because we were behind by 9 in goal difference with 1 game to go. When we were up by 3, I think we did try to have a fair go and close the gap. This is what did us I guess. Hope is often what kills :)

Bad management cost us the league. We didn't have to beat Chelsea, a draw would have done. They were time wasting and we were rushing around taking quick throw ins etc. I sat shouting "calm down" at the telly.

Rogers is a good manager and had good luck and bad luck in his tenure, but Klopp is shanks/ Ferguson level and loving ther ride. No point dwelling on recent history.

You’re a lucky, lucky man Ed025.
Being able to watch and enjoy this class Liverpool side and then come and have the crack with us.
Brilliant tonight eh. 💪.

{Ed025's Note - very much so juicer that was a great performance, i thought atalanta were better than that to be honest but i dont want to take nothing away from the reds who dominated from start to finish nate..

The thing with the slip was that if it didn’t happen the game was still 0-0 at half time.

Why do we automatically assume Chelsea wouldn’t have created another chance on the counter and taken that instead.

There is this weird belief that had that not happened we would taken something out of the game easily. Not so.

Liverpool where poor that day in the face of a well drilled and resilient Chelsea team. Yes the slip gave them something to hold onto but to suggest we would have just walked away with a win or draw otherwise is fantasy.

Rodgers bad management lost us the league, but surely he must have had some good management to even put us in the position to compete for the league.

04 Nov 2020 11:12:18
Burkey, you are right. I was exactly the same, saying we simply had to draw and then beat Palace to keep matters in our own hands. As it stood, we did have to reduce the goal difference against Palace to give us a proper chance.

04 Nov 2020 16:35:10
Rome 1977 you are right. Losing against Chelsea meant it was no longer in our hands, so even if we had beaten Palace 0-3 City would still have won the league on goal difference. Gerrard's slip was pivotal as it contributed to the loss, when only a draw was needed to keep it in our hands.

Apart from lessons, there is nothing else to be learned from the past. We move on or at least I had a long time ago.
