I'm trying not to post until my disappointment settles and I can be more objective but this thought will not change.

ED001 you were absolutely spot on with your criticism of Williams. He didn't hold the line and positionally was caught out several times. Again very young and some things he will learn but WOW is he ever slow!

{Ed001's Note - he looks to me like a player that has just been put in defence because he is tall, he shows no defensive awareness or understanding at all. Very worrying. Phillips looks a much better bet.}

I agree. Also his lack of pace is shocking for a modern defender. He makes Harry maguire look like Usain bolt. But to be fair to him its not like he cost us the 2 points. Can only blame the more experienced forward players for todays result.

We need a stop gap January signing, and that’s been obvious since the minute VVD got injured!
I expect one to be in the door Friday morning.

Most defenders are not like an in-form Van Dijk, wherein a lot of the defending is done just by them being there. Defence is about organisation and teamwork.
Ed, while I do understand your likening of Phillips to Morgan, how would have Morgan performed in a system that utilizes two marauding full-backs?

Morgan was reasonably quick though Ed, Phillips is not at all.
And we don’t play as deep as Leicester did?

Philips ain’t going to shore our defence up from the bench. His first task is to impress Klopp enough to get some game time Now ahead of Williams. If Matip is injured long term then are we going to see Phillips and Williams chop and change weekly like they did when Matip was out for cl and hammers game.

Phillips was ideal for the West Brom game as he’s dominant in the air and wins headers so the perfect player to play against a Fat Scam team, I can’t understand why Klopp didn’t bring him on. Yeah, he’s not the most elegant footballer in the world but he’s at least a good competent defender, alongside Fabinho he’d do well.

Phillips has always been my pick to step in over all the other young CB’s and games like this that are physical is where he thrives. Williams is not positionally aware nor experienced enuff to play at this level yet unlike Phillips who is more experienced having played in the Germany and was a key cog in helping Stuttgart get promoted. He should b drafted in, IMO.
