Ed01, if you have the time (! ), just wanted to know your thoughts on Trent’s form this season? Is it a case of he overachieved last year, or has he got a bit complacent?

I think we expect him to be providing assists and scoring free kicks every game, but for me his defending this season has been below his usual standard over the last 18 months.

{Ed001's Note - in what way has his defending been below standard? I really do not see what he is doing so wrong. Seems more like people are making up reasons to criticise him.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I thought he was doing OK until that injury he picked up since then he has looked off the pace and not his usual self.

Here, Here ED - players these days are not allowed to EVER let their standards drop for even a second.

He isn’t playing to the standards he set last year that is obvious. Andy Robbo is the benchmark for him IMO. But again it’s obvious why he is below his best, no pre season and then injury. I think Trent will be a massive part of our success going forward.

I don’t think Klopp would let the players allow their standards to drop either.

He seems below par after his injury! But he’ll get that back!
He could nvr defend either to be fair he needs to let others have a go at the set pieces for a while!

Hang on, what are yous on about? I watch every minute of every game and must've missed the bit when Trent was poor defensively or made repeated mistakes that led to goals or struggled in a game. His crossing and set pieces have been a bit crap, but will come good again. Defensively okay though, can you give specific examples of what you're referring to?

"Could never defend either"? Wow. We have some remarkably astute and shrewd observations.

I can’t think of any reason to criticise Trent this season, I don’t think he’s attacked as much as usual but I think that’s in part to him having to think about who’s playing in the right sided centre back role, I think he’s holding back slightly to protect them, allowing Robbo more freedom to go forward.

My only thoughts on this are that his set piece work has dropped down a notch. There were some poor corners and free kicks in that Newcastle game the other night. Other than that, still pretty darn decent. A few years ago there’s a chance we’d have lost the games against WBA or NUFC given how tight the final score lines were.

In my opinion, his defending this year has been below par, but looking into his individual statistics, he is underperforming compared to the last 2 seasons.

2018/ 19 - 29 appearances
3 blocks
35 interceptions
61 tackles
39 tackles won
62 clearances
22 headed clearances
9 aerial duels won

2019/ 20 - 38 appearances
9 blocks
45 interceptions
55 tackles
34 tackles won
70 clearances
29 headed clearances
16 aerial duels won

2020/ 21 - 14 appearances
1 block
18 interceptions
18 tackles
12 tackles won
12 clearances
4 headed clearances
3 aerial duels won

I obviously haven’t included goals against, as our back 5 this year has been hammered. Some would argue that he provides more for us going forwards than at the back, but with our defence so vulnerable, I’d have thought Trent and robbo would have had to contribute at the back a little more. His creative stats are way down this year:

2018/ 19
11 big chances created
12 assists

2019/ 20
18 big chances created
13 assists

2020/ 21
3 big chances created
2 assists.
