I've not actually seen or heard Cascarino's comments about disrespecting Villa, but I've seen them second hand. It's beyond me how he ever got a job in the media, even more so that he still has it now after all these years.

Anyway, it got me thinking about something that I've never really understood. This lazy old cliche about "disrespecting" the cup or the competition. It's ridiculous. Tends to be used by rival fans to find something negative to say about another club but it certainly has it's origins in the media. So if you don't play a full strength line up in an FA Cup match, you are "disrespecting the FA Cup", or you are disrespecting the opposition. Or, according to Cascarino - and perhaps most ridiculously of all - if you put out too strong a line-up for the level of opposition you're playing against, you are disrespecting the opposition.

Clubs and managers can pick the team they want to pick, within the rules of course. Actually, I think it's less of an issue in the cup because it's a one-off knock out match where you can't really impact the fortunes of other clubs. I can understand why people might get a bit more concerned if a team put out a weakened line up in a league match, because that could have an impact on the league position of other teams. If a team is pushing to win the league, or avoid relegation and maybe still in the Champions League or another competition that they have a better chance of winning, then I think it's totally reasonable for a manager to prioritise. If they then lose a match in the FA Cup that they would have been expected to win, it's on their head, and if fans are unhappy about it, they can make their displeasure known. But this "disrespecting the cup" cliche - I just don't get it. And reality is that the FA Cup doesn't have the profile that it used to. Still a major trophy to win (and I wish we'd win it again some time soon), but, like everything else in life, football has changed and evolved and the FA Cup isn't regarded quite the way it used to be, in my opinion.

Top post that RR, and I couldn't agree more.

Personally i believe the FA disrespected their own competition when they allowed Utd to pull out of it all those years back, and when they changed the Kick Off time for the final from 3 o clock.

OP, it’s all sensationalism at this point cos he did the same thing when Salah got fouled vs WH and accused him of diving and then saying it was a desecration of the memory of an England WC winner who had passed away at the time whose name escapes me. I don’t know what one had to do with the other but go figure.

I would not pay too much attention to such fame seekers cos that is just what they are and what they are hired to do.

100% agree Paterpan 5 o'clock kick off for the cup final and the semi finals being played at Wembley is just wrong lad's.

FA Cup run by amateurs. they haven’t a clue and deserve to see the competition be viewed almost as a distraction by clubs like LFC.

If they cared about supporters and ran it properly then it could become more relevant. Not going to hold my breath though as the FA is not fit for purpose,

Cascarino has little right to talk about disrespect in football. He was awarded the first of his 88 Republic of Ireland caps in 1985 but was refused an Irish passport the same year. In 1986 he discovered his maternal grandfather was not a blood relative but continued to represent Ireland only admitting much later in his autobiography that he was "a fraud"

I wouldn’t give him the air time lads!

ignore the crap that comes from that radio station.

And he conveniently overlooks that Aston Villa played a full strength side against our team of u18s and u23s in last seasons League Cup tie, when we had the World Club Cup the next day.

StEtienneAmen, if Cascarino could think that far, he would not have embarrassed himself as royally as he did by making such an absurd statement. He can’t hence, he did embarrass himself.
