Wow. This city villa game is farcical. How var haven't picked up the blatant offside is a joke and worse that they won't even show one replay of the offside. Joke.

Agree6 Disagree0

John motson and VAR hang your heads in shame you are a shambles to the highest degree!
Close offside call! only the 20 yard off.
Var will cover the ref and the red will cover for var.

{Ed001's Note - the Premier League are claiming it is a fresh phase of play because Mings touched the ball! Could they be more full of ****?}

20 Jan 2021 20:10:28
surley, even if Mings plays the ball, the city player i interfering with play before that as Mings knows he's there so can easily affect what Mings does? Yes Mings makes the wrong decsion and shouldve cleared it anyway he could, but that's ridiculous!

20 Jan 2021 20:14:51
Has to be offside! Shocking from VAR again has let the game down there and Villa must be gutted.

Here’s hoping Fulham pull one out of the bag 🤙.

20 Jan 2021 20:18:36
I’ve nvr seen anything like it in my life regards of mins touching it the players runs from 20yrds offside and makes a tackle! Epl refs are a cancer and there var crap!

20 Jan 2021 20:35:44
What's John Motson got to do with it? He's a retired commentator.

From the BBC:

My initial thoughts were as Mings played the ball, it wasn't a deliberate play on the ball, so therefore, didn't play the player onside.

"However, the law says: 'A player in an offisde position, receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, is NOT to be considered to have gained an advantage. '

"Therefore, Mings playing the ball deliberately - and we can see that he does that when he chests the ball - plays the Manchester City player onside, even though he is in an offside position. So therefore, the goal should stand.

"Rodri wasn't gaining an advantage by being where he was, that's the law and the fact that Mings makes a deliberate play on the ball, negates the fact that the player was in an offside position. "

I'm not sure how he "received" the ball, more like he took it and was able to because he was. offside.

{Ed001's Note - he was running towards the ball before Mings played it - so making himself active and offside irrelevant of what happens with Mings touch.}

What sickens me about that is firstly VAR didn’t pull it up which is disturbing enough on it’s own but secondly they are now trying to manipulate the wording of the rules to cover it up!
I’ve played and watched football for 40 years and that has always been offside.
If not then you can stand on the goal line and if the keeper makes a save just tap on the rebound from an offside position! The keeper has deliberately played the ball has he not? That’s makes me onside.
Our officials and the premier league are disgusting.

20 Jan 2021 20:57:16
I don't like this 'interfering with play'. If someone is in your peripheral vision, you don't know if they're off or not when you have milliseconds to make decisions, it's ridiculous.

20 Jan 2021 20:57:50
The system is working exactly the way it was set up to work. We as LFC fans, warned the other fans if other teams that this would happen to them too but they said we were making excuses. Not arsed anymore really cos nothing will b done and if you moan about things, it’s jus excuses.

20 Jan 2021 21:05:53
It is one of the biggest cover up jobs ever! No matter what total cock up the ref makes now it covered up by makes up some rule no one has ever heard of and var backs him. If watching football wasn’t hard enough as it is this just makes me want to throw the tv out the window. Am so angry about this tonight!

20 Jan 2021 21:05:53
Eds1 As just mere fans can we do anything about var?

{Ed001's Note - stop watching the game is the only thing.}

20 Jan 2021 21:32:22
Then I’d have to talk to the mrs I’ll accept var.

20 Jan 2021 21:33:13
I’m not watching many games at the moment - obvious reasons 😀
Void the league
MUFC
EFC.

20 Jan 2021 22:10:13
They literally make things up to support the decision they made on the day. How var got that so wrong today is just scary.

21 Jan 2021 01:23:01
They say he is onside as Mings made a deliberate attempt for the ball.
This is the same call as when Kane was 'onside'for one of the pens in 2017.
Fact is, if Mings considers Rodri as 'in play' then he would lump it, not chest it.
The farcical offside law and the subjectivity of it leads to players playing in a way that makes them think they are safe when, in reality, who knows what the decision will be?

{Ed0666's Note - The subjectivity of it is too protect refereees who make whopping errors

This was the exact same reason given for the Harry Kane offside against Lovren a couple of seasons ago. My problem is that they are not consistent. They give offsides where there are defenders interfering in play all the time. But they chose not to give it this time, as they did in that Spurs Liverpool game from a few seasons ago.

21 Jan 2021 07:20:00
“A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage”

That’s what they are using but I think it’s a completely different situation to the Lovren one mentioned above. In that case a ball was played through and lovren tried to intercept but effectively knocked it on to the offside player.

In this instance Rodri, in my opinion, never ‘received’ the ball from an opponent. He’s in an offside position and as Mings chests it he is still in an offside position and tackles him to win the ball.

I just don’t understand how you can construe that rule in that way other than to cover your own incompetence.

{Ed001's Note - also it should be remembered that the first offence is the one they are meant to call and Rodri moved towards the ball long before Mings plays it. So he had to be offside.}

21 Jan 2021 10:33:33
Exactly ed1, I won't put myself through it mate. It winds me up too much and to be honest I'm not missing it one bit, what I am missing is the days before VAR and the fans filling the stadium. The fans will return but we've got to live with VAR now and it's ruined the game Imo.

{Ed001's Note - I agree, it has made the game less appealing.}
