Sorry if I missed it, but has anyone thought about the scenarios for Liverpool’s disallowed goal yesterday?

Think it is an interesting one - I think from a Liverpool perspective (rose tinted glasses) that Dier has definitely fouled Firmino or committed a handball offence. My thoughts are that only 2 events should have occurred - be great to get everyone else’s view:

1) goal stands, handball was not deemed immediately before a goal, as there were three passes and half a pitch covered before Salah scored.
2) Firmino’s handball stops Liverpool’s advantage and Liverpool are given the free kick for Diers handball/ foul. (This is where it gets interesting) Dier is subsequently sent off for stopping a Goal. We know that Liverpool score if he doesn’t commit the foul following the immediate events that followed, thus this is even clearer than the term ‘stopping a clear goal scoring opportunity’ that a red card can be given for.

I don’t understand how Tottenham got the free kick, but think the 2nd scenario above is a potentially interesting one we may not have opportunity to discuss for a long time.

For me the question is why hasn’t the ref spotted the handball from Dier or Bobby. Or even the foul from Dier in the first place. This all happened in front of him. How did refs make decisions on handballs and fouls before var was introduced. Var is meant to help refs but it looks like they are sadly hiding behind it.

Its a foul on bobby and when analysed the way VAR look at it handball by bobby. Not by dier, his hand is across is midriff.

In order of events (dier no handball), foul on bobby, handball by bobby.

Therefore it should of been a free kick to us, how it was ruled as a spurs free kick when he watched the footage baffled me.

2 years ago, that wouldn't be given as handball but when you only look at that incident and slow it down, its always going to be given.

As for the punishment for dier, if it was awarded as free kick. I'd say yellow at absolute worst case. Yes we went on to score, but I think a clear cut opportunity is only when a player is through on goal not on the half way line. (even if we did score 10-15 seconds after)

{Ed001's Note - I am glad someone else saw it that way! I can't understand how that ended up as a free kick to Spurs either. Dier is clearly fouling Firmino before the handball and that has to be a Liverpool free kick or the goal stands.}

As they rule it for handball ed001, id say that is essentially advantage over but goes back to the free kick to us. By giving a free kick to spurs two refs have seen the incident and decided a fist full of shirt isn't a foul (highlighting how bad they are) .

Personally, i would adjudged that the foul caused the handball and advantage to liverpool. But I don't have my badges so what do I know!

I’m glad it never had any real impact on the game at the end of it. But yeah it’s an odd one. It should have been a free kick to us or the goal stands as I don’t think Bobby handling it led to any advantage to us anyway.
More ammunition to the VAR should be scrapped and the referees are totally useless crowd.

This is another example of VAR being badly used. It’s not the technology but the imbeciles operating it.

29 Jan 2021 12:39:09
For me, the Dier foul means it’s not a deliberate handball by Bobby as the foul causes him to handball it, so the goal stands. Pretty obvious and common sense for me but that’s not how games are reffed unfortunately.

29 Jan 2021 12:45:49
Ridiculous scenario the second one which would never ever happen.

What annoyed me is that the rule is that the goal should be disallowed if the handball occurs ‘immediately’ before the goal. What chance have we got if the referees and the dopes in the back watching the TV can’t even understand the rules?

29 Jan 2021 12:59:09
I have no problem with that being handball but that definitely was a foul on Bobby. actually has anyone noticed? Whenever salah plays badly most of the time it's coz opposite players are piggy riding him whole game. and never get called for foul? The refreeing is really really really really bad in pl. For once they shd try to increase the refreeing standards. courses during offseason maybe?

29 Jan 2021 13:09:02
Salah needs to start going down more again to get fouls as the refs are too stupid to blow up unless he hits the ground. That’s their fault not his. Forget what the press and idiots say.

{Ed0666's Note - don’t tell him that, the man already walks around enveloped in his own hubris and comments like yours don’t help believe me mate.

29 Jan 2021 13:26:54
WY nailed it, it should be given as a free for a foul on Firmino by Dier.

Firmino definitely moved his hand to it, but he's been blatantly fouled by Dier. Why VAR can look at one but not the other escapes me.

29 Jan 2021 14:01:46
PL is getting so silly, like a foul on the keeper by their own player the other day, gets them a free kick!

29 Jan 2021 14:28:17
It was a foul and/ or handball by Dier but the ref played on with the advantage to Liverpool. We scored then VAR highlighted the handball by Firmino. No goal, free kick to Spuds.
I can't stand VAR but in this case i think they got it correct.

29 Jan 2021 15:02:33
That call reminded me of club world cup when ref was debating over whether the foul on us was in or outside the box for like 5 mins then eventually came to his senses and awarded a free kick to the opposition?

I'm sorry what?!

29 Jan 2021 15:35:59
By the rules (not that they make the world of sense) if the ref would have played advantage for the foul on Firmino it would have been a free kick to Liverpool, but because he didn't, he can't use the VAR to over rule the free kick for Liverpool (why in not!? ) and must bring play back for the handball. Meaning the other team benefits from the foul.

I don't understand why you guys don't understand what is going on here haha

It is very clear and obvious that the officials operate off of half a brain that leads to them seeing half the picture and therefore making erroneous calls. Quite surprised that we get surprised lol :p.
