Ed1, would like to get your opinion on the centre back pairing for this weekend if you're free. Phillips has done well in my opinion, has not put a foot wrong. However, I feel against Leicester, their pace in the forwards might prove an issue for Phillips. I'm leaning towards Davies, who is meant to have decent turn of pace alongside Kabak. That's with Hendo and Fab just in front of them of course. How would like us to set up?

{Ed001's Note - it doesn't matter how quick the defender is, if he plays against Vardy he will get caught at some point by a run. I would be happy with Phillips, who will always give himself a start and so is less likely to be caught out by pace. I am not in a position to judge the 2 noobs, so I don't mind which partners Phillips.}

Fair point Ed1. I know that pace is not everything and positional awareness makes up for that. Like I said Phillips hasn’t done anything wrong to lose his place so him alongside Kabak I’m more than happy with. Plus Fab and Hendo screening provides that extra protection. Actually looking forward to the game on Saturday. Thiago will be allowed to play his game and not have get involved with last ditch tackles near our goal.

Ed your comment about Phillips giving a player space so he doesn’t get done for pace, do you think this could be why klopp doesn’t seem to like him? As we seem very intent on the high line?

{Ed001's Note - but that is what van Dijk did too when at his best. You don't have to drop deep to give them space. You only need to make sure you are between them and the goal when the opposition has the ball and to drop off when one of their player has the ball with no pressure on them. We continued to play a high line with Phillips in the side.}

I would start with Phillips and whichever of the new boys who has impressed the most in training. Get the midfield back to normal, Hendo, Fab and Thiago. Although I wouldn’t be disappointed if Curtis showed up. Mind you I would also play myself up front so I wouldn’t trust me.

Ed, it seems to me that Phillips is kind of a throw back defender. He isn't the fastest, but he is good in the air, knows how to tackle, hard nosed, and generally positions himself very well. Why in your opinion doesn't Klopp play him more?

{Ed001's Note - because Klopp wants to dominate the ball as the next step in improving the team. Phillips is just not good enough on the ball for Klopp's liking.}

We need to change something, this Henderson Fabinho thing isn’t working at all. Whack the new boys in, we keep losing every game anyway.

Ta Ed.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome.}

From memory, Vardy’s goal record against Liverpool pre-Van Dijk was impressive, he scored regularly.
When Van Dijk and Gomez / Matip got together, his goals dried up and I can’t recall him scoring since?
He utilised his own pace extremely well and I personally don’t want to see Phillips on the pitch against Leicester, the Ed’s points accepted too.
I’d be surprised if Phillips is picked for this one.

Is Phillips that bad on the ball though? Granted he's no Van Dijk but who would expect him to be. First and foremost he seems like a good defender and someone who gets in good positions particularly defending set pieces. But he never looked incapable on the ball to me.

Tbf, I thought Phillips was okay on the ball in his last couple of appearances on us. Played a couple of decent switches out to Robbo and was generally a lot quicker and more comfortable getting his head up than he'd been earlier in the season. He's maybe not the best for threading a ball between the lines, but he certainly showed he had more than a 5 yard pass in him.

Exactly my thoughts SR. He's clearly not going to be a world class ball playing CB but as a back up I think he's more than able.

Klopp does not fancy Phillips cos he is not good enuff on the ball or may not have the pace he would like. I understand it BUT to me, that ship has sailed.

I personally think, it is not an issue if Phillips can read the game well and make sure he is between the forward and the goal cos in the end, that is where the forward wants to go. We will see what happens BUT I think two of the CB's should play now and get a relationship going. This whole Fab/ Hendo CB partnership has run its course, in my book.

Bledd85, no one is comparing Phillips to VVD. The debate is whether Klopp fancies him based on the way Klopp wants his CB's to play and since he is lacking certain attributes like quality on the ball and pace, those are the sticking points for Klopp.

Phillips reads the game well and his awareness of what’s going on around him is good. He lacks pace, but his intelligence to read situations offsets that. The only thing is he’s not the most technical gifted, but so what? Fabinho and Henderson are good technically gifted players but got roasted by Man City, maybe playing defenders who can defend and our best midfielders in midfield would have prevented that situation from occurring? I’d go Phillips and Kabak.

I like Phillips, type of guy you can tell puts his head down in training, doesn't get bitter about playtime and just tries to give it his all. I do want it to work out for him at Liverpool as he is not a bad backup option.

given the crisis, I think guys like Phillips and Davies who are a bit like journeymen but also around mid-20s and are motivated to prove themselves, should be thrown in. Phillips did a job against Son and it was like Son wasn't even playing. I'd like Phillips to play.
