Just thinking ahead a few years (prompted by JK's question below) who are the current crop of up and coming stars in the U23s who could have a future with us?

I know that Kelleher, Neco Williams and Curtis Jones have already shown that they have the potential to save us a lot in the transfer market in coming years, as has Harvey Elliot who's the youngest of them all!

But I don't get the chance to follow any of our youth games (not that many of our First Team games, mind you, with lockdown and homeschooling! ) so would appreciate any sage advice from the Eds and Reds who do follow them.

Clarkson would be a good shout to step up.

Leyton Stewart seems to be the one they believe to have the highest ceiling but honestly it all comes down to how they develop behind closed doors and what characteristics jurgen spots in them on a day to day basis.

Tyler Morton seems to be one with great potential.

Pitaluga will probably replace Adrian as 3rd choice keeper next season.

Klopp really likes Billy Koumetio at centre back. He's very raw though.

Layton Stewart is very highly rated and is a natural goal scorer.

Leighton Clarkson and Jake Cain already train with the first team and are highly rated midfielders.

A lot was thought of Glatzel, Larouci and Millar but injuries have curtailed their development significantly.

Nobody else stands out for me personally.

One to watch out for is Frauendorf, captained the German under 16's and those Germans seem to do well.

I must admit, I don't follow the U23s really and I know that just because it's the U23s, it doesn't mean that we're necessarily talking about 21 and 22 year olds, but as a general rule, I've always felt that if a young player is going to make it at the top level (i. e. to establish themselves as a key player in one of the usual top teams), then we already know about them by the time they're 18, certainly by the time they're 19 and 20.

Most recently it's been Jones, Williams and Trent - we knew about all of them by the time they were 18, had seen them in the first team and had seen enough from them to know they had something - and even then, it's only Trent who has gone on to completely nail down a first team place. More spectacularly in the past, think about McManaman, Fowler, Owen, Gerrard and even Carragher at Liverpool; Rooney, Milner, Giggs, Gary Neville, Beckham and Scholes, Keane at Forest, Ferdinand and Terry. These players were all on the radar at 18 or 19. For a couple of them, maybe it took another year or two to then establish themselves as regulars but they'd shown enough for it to be obvious that they had something more than your average 18 year old.

I think if you have a player in the U23s who is 18 or 19 and hasn't really got close to any involvement with the first team, then it's unlikely they are going to make it at the very top. Certainly by 20 or 21, I think if a player is that good, then they would already be in or around the first team.

Good shout KingCarlos. I've read great things about Melkamu Frauendorf, Matuesz Musialowski and Kaide Gordon. Never seen any of them play yet though so left them out of my list. I know they all were brought in recently and are seen as huge talents. Someone wrote that Frauendorf is a bit like Gundogan. That would be nice ayy!

RR - that's a good point and somewhat sad at the same time. Some players just mature at different rates. Guys like Suso, Luis Alberto, Teixera etc just had a slower development curve and then got their chance elsewhere. I'd love to have a system where we could send players on long term loans, even 2 or 3 seasons. But assume it isn't possible. I can imagine for a young player trying to prove themselves in first team training whilst not playing and then going on multiple loans can be unsettling for their development. Whereas if you could send them somewhere suitable to establish themselves as professionals, that could be ideal.

RR worth remembering players like kane who were being pushed out the door at 23 before hitting their stride, players like coady and suso we didn't really work with who ended up having careers significantly better than a lot of those we played in their place etc. Players mature at different rates and deciding they didn't have it so early has cost a lot of clubs a lot of money with very middling quality players.
