Someone did an interesting thread on tw*tter trying to explain the role Gini plays.

He highlighted his ability to keep the ball in most situations, ability to resist the press and also sustain attacks as being his key strengths. But what really made me chuckle and is for me why Gini isn't a top top player is that he says Gini doesn't play the final cutting ball and plays it backwards because that's "not his job".

The best midfielders aren't defined by roles, watch Fabinho for example. He does his role excellently, but contributes a hell of a lot more with his direct passing and balls in behind than Gini. He also has the ability to fill in the backline and is a versatile player.

We've seen that Gini can do his role well also. His ball retention is excellent and pressing, when he tries, is also impressive. But that's about it, he offers very little offensively (unless given complete freedom) and is a complete liability when given the task of defending and protecting the back 4.

Many fans do not rate Gini and he has his critics on here. Don’t get me wrong there’s loads I think he could do more but it’s not like the other midfielders are goal and assist machines (I think gini is top scorer this season from midfield) but regardless of whether we believe he goes missing every game Klopp seems to like him and I think he’s up there as being the Most used player in Klopps time here. If he goes good luck to him if he stays it’s because Klopp wants him too.

He’s a good player, not a great player but a good one yeah, and a very useful player to have in the squad. The issue is he’s just not putting the effort in and hasn’t for a while.

He is a very good player and in some games, great. Just not consistent enuff and yes, does go missing during games. Still like him to stay but if he wants or has to go, I ain't sweating it either.

He was an absolute integral part in a CL and PL winning midfield 3.
That’s not a bad curriculum vitae.

It really isn’t about goals or assists or 30 yard screamers, just watch the game and use your eyes.

We’ve needed people to step up in this period of struggle, particularly in the absence of the captain and fabinho in midfield, yet gini has actively shirked responsibility on purpose when on the pitch, despite often holding the armband. It is unacceptable and its times like these you find out who is worth keeping and who isn’t.

Perfectly said Mikey.

Perhaps in Gini’s defence has it been a case of struggling without Fab and Hendo in midfield with him as even though he is in a midfield 3 he is still playing out of his natural position having to play the 6 which isn’t his natural role. It probably doesn’t sound like a big change but imagine asking Bobby to play in the front 3 in Mo or Manes position and expecting him to step up or not look out of place. Just a thought as Gini looked far better on wed night with Fab back in there.

Now now JK that post is making too much sense. that's not permitted were Gini is concerned, keep those excuses for Thiago.
Much better to say his head is in Barcelona or he hides behind players 😁.

There's a reason Klopp wants Gini to stay.
If supporters can't see it it's more to do with them than it is Gini. Or Klopp.

{Ed0666's Note - I don’t 5hink it makes sense from a fiscal point of view to keep Gini.

If Klopp wanted Gini to stay I sure he would. Its the Emre Can situation all over again. If it was Hendo or Fabs they would have already signed.

12 Mar 2021 23:31:29
Klopp has been quite open about wanting Gini to stay, I'm not sure how that could be in doubt.

{Ed0666's Note - On the contrary Klopp was happy for Gini to go and deemed him replaceable hence one of the reasons for Ginis chagrin.

The whole midfield has struggled without Hendo and Fabinho in there. Thiago and Jones aren’t disciplined enough and chase shadows which creates too much space making it impossible for the other midfielders to execute a press efficiently. There are just too many gaps.
Gini has been made a scapegoat as he hasn’t signed a contract so he’s an easy target.
Is it a coincidence that he had his best game in a while on Wednesday? Of course not! Fabinho holds his position and more importantly anticipates the play much better meaning the other 2 midfielders can also hold their positions better giving them less distance to cover to get the press on. This in turn means the forwards can press knowing that the midfield are pressing behind them so not giving easy options to the man on the ball.
It’s in this scenario that Gini has excelled for the last 2 years not the recent headless chickens approach.

{Ed0666's Note - please know mate Klopp was ambivalent towards gini’s departure.
