What are everyone's thoughts on our lineup for the 2nd CL leg?

I would bench Wijnaldum. Although I doubt Klopp will, for reasons I cannot fathom. He slows down the play way too much. Thiago and Fabinho start for me.

We will have to go for an early goal and that's why I would start with 4 attackers. Firmino, Jota and Salah start for sure.

The question is do we start with Shaqiri or Mane? Shaqiri can provide that extra incisiveness and creativity in the final third and I have never seen him short on confidence which is a good thing. Mane on the other hand can be very destructive but he has been poor for so long and he looked finished when he came on against Villa.

For me the lineup should be:

Ali, TAA, Nat, Kabak, Robertson, Thiago, Fab, Shaq, Jota, Firmino, Salah.

Jones or Mane for Shaq otherwise I'd agree with you.

Jones hasn’t played a single minute for us since being subbed in the Chelsea defeat at the start of March. I know he had a niggle yesterday but he’s been an unused sub in the other 4 games. I’d like to see us go with the 4 up top against Real and really go for it. Mane yesterday showed what he can bring to the team and so did Shaq. Mane did everything right up until that finish which in fairness can only be described as terrible. If we go with a 3 then I’d expect it to be Jota, Bobby and Salah. I think Shaq did enough yesterday to get more minutes as a sub on wed night. He was only on the pitch 4-7 mins and he was involved in the winner and almost created us a 3rd. I wouldn’t start shaq but if we still need goals I’d def like to see him given 30-40 mins.

This won't be popular but I would go with our front four of Jota, Mane, Firmino and Salah. Have Fabinho and Thiago sit back and defend, spray the passes in, move the ball along constantly. With the objective of getting a two goal lead. If and when achieved, then I would take one or two of the front four off and bring in Wijnaldum and Milner or a third CB to consolidate. We're behind by two goals already; pointless to play a defense or balanced lineup from the beginning. My view.

I think 4 up top against their midfield is too desperate. We’re two goals down with an away, not insurmountable by any stretch. If think we need to play someone who will harass Kroos and Modric and not give them time on the ball. Maybe Oxlade Chamberlain? He’s certainly no slouch, has energy to burn and will carry out that kind of job, also gives us a direct runner in midfield too alongside Fabinho and Thiago?

Td_red. Having watched el classico last night I am very concerned we'll get beaten on the counter attack. Madrid were very solid and happy to soak up pressure then used the pace on the wings especially vinicus jr. For me TAA and Robertson have to bring their levels upto. last years standards to have any chance to win. As for the team I feel klopp will go with fab, thiago and gini with jota mane and salah upfront. Then take one of them off with 30 mins left and stick on firmino/ shaq.

I get what you are saying RedDan. If the scores were level I would go for 3 mids as well but we need to attack to put pressure on Madrid, hence the choices. And I definitely see Firmino starting over Mane.

6Times, starting Ox would be a no-brainer against 3 aged mids who will be playing 3 games in a week. But he hasn't had any minutes for quite a while now so hard to see him starting such an important game. But one thing is for certain, we cannot allow Modric/ Kroos space or time. They need to be harassed as soon as they get the ball.

I would not go for the 4 up top right at the start cos that would leave us short in CM and that could be a disaster esp that early on. IMO, We need some leadership in that team especially in midfield so I wouldn’t mind a Milner, Thiago and Fab combo with Bobbie, Jota and Salah up top.

Gini should benched and Mane as well. He was dire from the moment he came on to finish vs Villa. Who thought he would score as he approached Martinez? I didn’t and I prolly am not the only one.

Didn’t Ajax do Madrid 2 seasons ago with an attacking 4231? It could be the way to go.

Personally i’d have saved Milner for this game, think his leadership could prove vital, i’d still play him even if its just for one half. Playing Wijnaldum is literally as bad as playing 10 men at the moment, if we play him and we go out it’s on Klopp. The amount of minutes he’s had 2 games in a row suggests he may not play though.

I said before the weekend that we need Milner in midfield and the 'traditional' front 3 because it's essential we get our press going from the first minute and keep it going, which means picking guys who will not shirk out of their work no matter what happens. Wijnaldum and Jota both hid in the first leg. We cannot have that in the second.

But Milner played the full 90 against Villa, so idk if he'll be able to play at sufficiently intense level on Wednesday. I know he's Milner, but he's also 35, and we have seen him struggle to play to his best in consecutive games. Personally I would pick him and if we have to hook him after 60 minutes, so be it. 60 minutes of Milner is better than 90 of Wijnaldum at the moment. But I suspect Klopp will not.

The usual back 5, plus Fabs and Thiago will all play anyway. Klopp could stick a front 4 ahead of that, or Wijnaldum plus three forwards. We haven't seen Ox or Jones in a while, so it's safe to assume their not in consideration for a starting berth. Then again, he pulled Keita out of nowhere for the last leg.

I think starting Shaqiri in midfield won't work, he just doesn't do enough when he's not on the ball for this kind of game, and I think leaving Firmino out would be a huge mistake.

Jota and Salah for their goal threat have to start. I suspect all four will start. If that’s the case then Fabinho sits back screening the defence and Thiago will play the Alonso role if you were by sitting back and spraying the passes from deep. Firmino will have a big role to play if this system is deployed by dropping deep and also pressing. Having said that, I wouldn’t be upset if the starting line up you named started, with the exception Jones for Shaq.

Think we need to tweak abit and play 4231, if we can control middle of the park with Fab and Thiago controlling tempo of the game then we've every opportunity to blow them away. We've become so predictable recently time to tweak and Surprise the opposition.

Suck madrid in, play on counter. The likes of modric kroos and casemiro cannot catch mane and salah in a race.
Id play 5 4 1. Press give them no space to move the ball. Ask them to run a lot.

Trent fab kabak philip robbo
Mo thiago milner shaq
Origi
9 men behind the ball to defend. One up for hold and release.
Get two goals switch to all defensive. Be as negative as possible with 30 percent possession as max. Tire out those old legs.
Passing on counter to be quick one touch. Just how leeds did it against city.
Zidane won't have a clue and we would have stolen it before he can change it.

I would go 4-3-3 to start. Ali, TAA, Kabak, Nat, Robbo, Fab, Thiago Gini, Mo, Jota and Sadio. If by HT its still 0-0 and we need goals in the second half go with Bobby on at HT as well as the other three attackers, for either Thiago or Gini. If we need 2 goals im a half then leaving it till the 75th min is no good. May as well go for it.
