From what we have seen so far from Kabak would anybody want the club to sign him on a permanent basis?

Agree5 Disagree0

11 Apr 2021 18:25:46
No few years time maybe not now.

11 Apr 2021 18:36:34
For me he would be behind a fit Vvd, Gomez and Matip so 20 mill is very steep for a 4th choice. However Matip cannot stay fit so that makes us needing a 3rd choice centre half who will likely play quite a bit (with Gomez and Vvd both returning from injury anything could happen) so that makes 20 mill for centre half actually a bargain. He’s not really shown that he is good enough yet but are we likely to get a better centre half than him for that price. The other option is keeping Phillips and him playing more there next season. I think Klopp wants better but funds might mean we end up settling for Kabak.

11 Apr 2021 18:36:44
For the fee involved i'd definitely sign him up. After a shaky start i think he's been getting better, certainly on a par with Phillips who everyone seems to adore.

{Ed077's Note - Phillips is free, Lanka will cost around 19_20m. He hadn't shown enough quality to be spending that much on a 3rd or 4th choice IMO.

11 Apr 2021 18:52:35
Nope not good enough
Up the pool.

11 Apr 2021 19:04:59
I think we will definitely get Konate over the line (he seems to be the VVD partner Klopp wants at CB) . Signing Kabak permanently depends on whether we can find buyers for Davies, Matip and even Phillips.

11 Apr 2021 19:09:47
He is about the same level as Phillips but Kabak is younger. But the harsh truth is Liverpool want to be challenging as one of the best teams in Europe. Kabak isn’t quick, positionally poor, average passer, gives away easy fouls. He is young but a mile of the required level atm.

{Ed077's Note - and Phillips is homegrown which Kabak won't be.

11 Apr 2021 19:22:52
I’d like to see him next to vvd.

11 Apr 2021 19:23:38
Nat and kabak are pretty similar. Both have poor pace, slow feet and slow at sensing danger and poor at quick release of a positive forward pass but decent enough at basic defending and heading. Nat is free and kabak is 20m but has better potential to improve. A tough call on what to. Both are 3rd choice at best with vvd, jg and a fit matip ahead of them. Not sure sepp would be any better than them either. Either keep one of Nat or kabak and buy another reliable cb instead.

11 Apr 2021 19:33:07
But if Kabak isn't deemed good enough then either is Phillips! Being homegrown should not be a reason to keep a player if he is not good enough.

{Ed001's Note - you are missing the point, there is a difference between being good enough to be a back up and being good enough to spend the money on. They are both good enough to be a back up, but neither are good enough to be first choice, so why spend money on one? Better to put the money towards someone to push or replace either VVD or Gomez, while keeping Phillips as the 4th choice/back up for free.}

11 Apr 2021 19:55:21
Agreed. Ship Kabak back, keep Phillips, move on Matip and buy that CB that Klopp wants. Job done.

{Ed077's Note - sounds simple.

11 Apr 2021 20:04:08
Nope.
Once VVD and Gomez are back and we buy a new CB to partner VVD he would be 4th choice at best.
Money is going to be tight and we look like we will need to replace a few in the squad so why spend any money on him when Phillips is there for free?
Plus he’s not actually that good either and won’t get any better if he’s going to be 4th choice and never play.

11 Apr 2021 19:53:57
Kabak has only turned 21 I’d take a punt on him I’d be rid of Matip!
Also vvd and Gomez might nvr be the same again not saying kabak as our no1 cb I’m
Just thinkin he’s worth 20m if Keita is worth 60m.

11 Apr 2021 20:39:20
VVD
Gomez
Konate
Phillips
Fabs

Should be good enough.

11 Apr 2021 21:05:28
Kieta isn’t worth £60m though. Lol.

11 Apr 2021 21:06:33
Ed001 is 100% right. It makes no sense from a business standpoint to keep Kabak and get rid of Phillips. Kabak has done nothing to prove that he is any better than Phillips so it makes no sense at all to spend money when it is not necessary for a center half that will be at best 3rd choice.

{Ed0666's Note - maybe Philips wants to be first choice somewhere rather than fifth choice at Liverpool?

11 Apr 2021 21:09:11
I understand that Ed. just think Kabak has the higher ceiling of the two.

{Ed0666's Note - I’m not sure we take kabak Jadon. I think Konate and maybe a cheap kid with potential somewhere. 18 million for a fourth choice defender is not prudent and he’s not great either. But the caveat is he’s still young and can vastly improve

11 Apr 2021 21:18:20
My prediction is a lot of people are going to be disappointed because in my opinion Klopp will sell Phillips and sign Kabak. I get that they're at a similar level on current ability, but Kabak is 3-4 years younger. I also don't know how anyone can genuinely believe Kabak is as slow as Phillips. Kabak is definitely quicker but he's still slow to react which is why he sometimes looks to be a yard slow. His recovery pace has bailed him out a fair few times. The knowledge of when to drop can be coached. Phillips will never be quick enough in body to play a high line and you can't coach natural pace. Kabak is also infinitely more comfortable on the ball. He can actually carry the ball past players pressing him and he has a good passing range. Phillips can pick a pass if he has time but when pressured he looks nervy and unbalanced.

Virgil
Konate
Kabak
Gomez

That'd be my realistic preference for next season. I wouldn't personally pick Konate due to his injury record but it looks like it's happening. You can see Kabak has the potential to be a very good player. He is still a kid. Hell, he'd still be in College if he wasn't a footballer. Phillips will never be more than Wolves/ West Ham level in my opinion and as much as I love his commitment and do or die style, I think the Real Madrid away game gave us a clearer idea of the level he's at. His homegrown status will make him attractive to mid-table teams who play a deep line and invite crosses into the box. He's a good player, but expansive possession based football? Clearly not and never will be his bag. It's all opinions though. Klopp's is the one that matters at the end of the day.

11 Apr 2021 21:47:30
Personally, I think Kabak is getting kept. Just a gut feeling cos he is better on the ball than Phillips (who has improved in this area as well) and is quicker than him yet not the blessed with pace.

I understand that neither is good enuff to start and Phillips is free and home grown while Kabak will cost money but I just think Klopp fancies Kabak’s skill set over Phillips’ cos it fits well with the way we play. Also remember that Kabak is a starter for Turkey and will play at the Euros this summer and at 21, his ceiling is much higher. We shall see.

11 Apr 2021 22:21:41
"Konate looks like it's happening". What is this based on?

11 Apr 2021 22:58:33
Mark08 u for real pal fabhino again as a stand in CB? He’s a midfielder end of!

11 Apr 2021 23:17:51
Its a tough call as Kabak still has a way to go, but on balance, as long as we are signing a genuine challenger to Gomez/ VVD then I would be happy for us to sign Kabak.

I would like Phillips to stay too, and Matip be sold. Phillips I think offers something different - an old skool CB who may be effective against any old skool CFs we come up against.

However, as Ed066 says, Phillips may not want to stay as 4/ 5th choice, if so, good luck to the guy.

I agree with Adam that Kabak is faster than Phillips. I also think he is showing decent development and has quite a way to go at the age of only 20. Even in this market, £18m is a snip for a 20yo who has as high a bar as I believe Kabak has.

12 Apr 2021 00:06:51
Just letting you all know, the fee for kabak is agreed at 9mill Euro.

{Ed0666's Note - isn’t it 18 million? What are we getting 1 leg?

12 Apr 2021 00:24:50
I’ve just realised, I’ve been saying sell Nathan Phillips but his contract runs out in July 2021 so he can leave on a free?
That puts a different slant on it as I thought his sale could off-set Kabak’s purchase.
Not sure now. If he’s got interest from elsewhere, with a decent contract, regular playing time and even a signing-on fee, he might well choose to leave anyway.
I can see next year being VVD, Gomez, AN Other and Matip now. Whether we need another more than that, lol, who knows?

{Ed0666's Note - if you don’t know who does juicer?

12 Apr 2021 07:03:27
MK Scouser, you could well be right but I'm not sure if the club can afford that new "starting" CB plus £20 million for Kabak. I wouldn't be adverse to keeping Kabak instead of Phillips and, as you say the potential would be better in Kabak. I think it will all come down to finances in the Summer I guess.

12 Apr 2021 08:08:19
Juicer I’m sure it was said on here or live chat the other day that Phillips in fact had signed a new contract until 2022 or 2023 some time ago.

{Ed001's Note - his agent confirmed that his contract does not expire in the summer recently.}

12 Apr 2021 08:39:14
putting all our interests aside, I feel like Phillips deserve the chance to make a go of it at another club. I'd hate to see him sitting in the stands for us.

12 Apr 2021 10:49:57
Faith, that may be what it comes down to in the end.

12 Apr 2021 10:50:48
Not for me so far. We have hardly got any money so what we do have shouldn’t go on him. He looks asleep a lot of the time and when he does run he looks like he’s dragging an anchor behind him.
