"Hey John W can we have some new players in the summer?

Ideally we would like Haaland Sancho and Jude Bellingham"

"Ok guys, I am working on a deal to bring in extra funds, so we will be joining a new European Super League"

"NO NO YOU CAN NOT DO THAT, STAYING IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IS SANCROSANT"

"OK guys but don't ask me for any new players then".

Agree8 Disagree0

I’d rather not get any players if it means ruining football as we know it. Maybe if they capped players wages, sorted agents fees and made transfer fee a little more believable instead of stupid, then that would make players more affordable.

Pegleg, perhaps you can explain to me how forming a European Super League will ruin football as we know it?

As I understand it, the teams that were going into the Super League were not going to leave the Premier League, so I don't see how it adversely affects the other 14 teams in the league, in fact it would benefit them as 4 of them would be guaranteed Champions League football going forward.
If you are going to say that football isn't the same without the threat of relegation, I can tell you that it is the same, having been involved in leagues where teams that finish bottom do not get relegated.
Winning a game in the last minute is still an amazing feeling, and losing a game is still as gut wrenching.
Winning the league in the last game of the season, will stay in my mind until the day that I pass from this mortal coil
I seriously do not understand what was wrong with the Super League idea.

Same can be said about the £70 ticket prices for the new stand when the fans walked out mid way through the game.

I’m sure you would have been absolutely fine with the fact you can never be promoted in ESL if Liverpool hadn’t been one of the elite clubs then Langland?

25 Apr 2021 16:23:44
This argument was explained in graphic detail on the internet and in the media for the best part of a week by fans, pundits, players, managers and more . If you still don't understand then that's fine, but just to bring this up again so soon after it has been explained probably means you didn't pay attention.

OP, you have captured this ironic situation perfectly. Fans want big time owners to invest in their clubs and buy top players (they aren’t free, cost a country’s national budget, and the wages are thru the roof) yet want to tell the owners (who OWN their clubs btw) what they should and should not do with their own money and acquired asset. Check out Simon Jordan’s comments on Talksport. It is quite enlightening and hilarious at the same time.

Come the season after next, we'll see what happens to ticket and TV subscription prices - I'd expect that they'll become a problem.

Additionally, a minimum of 5 teams across the associated leagues, per season, would be promoted in an ESL model. That's 1-2 teams more per season that wouldn't ordinarily see top-flight European action.

Thirdly, there would be little reason for non-ESL clubs to not participate in existing European competitions, i. e. CL/ EL.

More money, controlled by the earning clubs, enhanced financial kick-backs to domestic leagues and grassroots, no required change to domestic competition, increased participation in top-level, European competition - amongst other benefits. The main thing they got wrong is that they didn't try to include fans, players and staff in formative discussions. Another is that they didn't gauge the influence of the Sky/ media-sponsored mouthpieces.

{Ed002's Note - Have you been at the brown acid?}

25 Apr 2021 17:30:24
That has been levelled at me in the past.

25 Apr 2021 18:21:55
Shaq Attack
You embarrass yourself with your reply.
1) Liverpool will always be an elite football club so that chance of them not being included is nil.
2) There would have been opportunity for teams to be pr the Super League.
So are you another person that is objecting to this league but you don't really know why you are objecting?

25 Apr 2021 18:15:37
Vermiculo
All that I have heard all week is.
Its not fair on the other 14 teams in the league - Every team in the league try to gain an advantage over the others, fairly or unfairly. So that argument doesn't wash
I hear that you can't have football without relegation - But you can.
Also there were 5 spaces for teams that could be relegated and promoted to the league.
So that argument doesn't wash.
The only people that I understand objecting are the media, the likes of Sky, BT and Talksport, who probably would not get the media rights, because the Super League clubs were looking to stream the matches on their own platforms. - And boy have they been objecting, and showing 200 fans showing up to demonstrate against the Super League, but not pointing out that there are 10s of thousands of fans that have not demonstrated.
Simon Jordan from Talksport seems to get mentioned on here a lot, probably because he does sometimes talk sense.
He said " If the Premier League clubs decided to broadcast their own content they could dwarf the revenue that they currently earn, and they could reduce the price point for fans to about £5.00 per month.
Win - Win.

{Ed001's Note - 5 spaces for teams other than the founding 15. So no relegation and promotion for three quarters of the teams. If you fail to understand the effect it would have on the rest of football, those that are on the outside, then it is because you are self-centred moral vacuum who doesn't care about others. The media are irrelevant. This is about the football league as a whole that would collapse. Win win? For who? No one wins but the rich owners. Jordan speaks sense? No he doesn't. He speaks greed but you seem to be exactly the same.

You speak like a Thatcherite. Because that is exactly what this plan entails, doing what Thatcher did. Get rich at everyone else's expense and **** 'em, they can die in poverty for all you care because you don't care as your team would be rich. Sad. I miss the days when people actually stood up for what was right, rather than tried to make excuses like you are doing and pretending it is just 200 against it.}

25 Apr 2021 18:43:05
Thanks for your reply Ed001, at last someone is giving me a reason why I should be against the Super League - because the whole football league would collapse.
I do not see the connection between the two, but that is probably due to my Thatcherite tendencies, in fact I almost regret going on strike for 12 months trying to stop Thatcher from shutting the pits down in 1984/ 1985.

{Ed001's Note - if you don't see the connection, it is because you don't understand what football is about. The ups and downs, the relegations and promotions, you are so ensconced in talking about Liverpool and what it does for them, you have forgotten that nothing happens in isolation.

As for what you did back then, shame it never taught you anything then. Because you are now backing the very same ideas that she brought to the practice of mining. Send all the money to the ones that made her money, those mines in Oz her hubby had shares in and let the British ones go to rack and ruin as they had no one left to sell their product to. Which is exactly what will happen to the rest of the English leagues without the biggest clubs. The long term plan is not to stay in the domestic league, they have made it plain from the start that there are too many games because that is the next step. The move away from the domestic game to being only in the ESL to protect 'their' product.}

25 Apr 2021 18:59:00
The ESL is terrible idea, it benefits the rich few and leaves the rest behind. Imagine watching Arsenal finish bottom of the ESL 5 years in a row yet continue to play in it, it would be embarrassing. I will never support a league that is a closed shop with no relegation or promotion.

25 Apr 2021 19:41:25
I apologise Langland you were paying attention, it's just empathy you're having trouble with, there's a song about it you know from a musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Cheers Ed01 for saving me the time to go over this .

25 Apr 2021 19:46:52
Sancrosant?
Are they a Spanish team?

25 Apr 2021 19:53:02
Langland has to be trolling.

25 Apr 2021 20:06:29
In relation to the comment as this not impacting the other 14 PL teams negatively as they could have 4 of them in the Champions League. so Bayern and PSG versus Leicester, West Ham, Everton and Leeds.

While we would be playing Arsenal and Spurs in our "super" league where it wouldn't even matter how bad your club could get as last place means nothing.

What a load of garbage. No thank you.
