Nat Phillips is my player of the season without him we would be nowhere near the champions league next season. I don't see us selling Matip as I can't see any club buying him, so with funds tight I think we should sell Phillips because after this season his price will go down with lack of game time. He has earned a place in a first team but his going to be 5th choice so unless we have an injury crisis like this season, Games will only come in cup games and I think he deserve more than that. If he goes he will always be remembered at the club for his contribution this season.

I would keep him as 4th choice CB to boost the Home Grown quota and try and offload Matip.

But like you said will the be much demand for Matip given his injury record?

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool are not looking to sell Matip.}

01 Jun 2021 09:46:52
I see Ed has said we ain’t looking to sell Matip!
He’s too unreliable!
Vvd konate Gomez Matip on paper it’s mouth watering!
But 3 have proved to be injury prone and we don’t know how vvd will come back!
Just my view.

Matip is Definitely injury prone as for Gomez I think he has been unlucky with injuries nearly everyone has had has been a bad one broken leg that could happen to any player. As for Konate only time will tell, missed most of his games with one bad injury. But if all are fit apart from Konate who I have not seen enough of all are few levels up on Phillips. And you cannot run a club by your heart so we should let Phillips go we did the same with Origi after the champions league win give him a new contract when we should have cashed in as he was at his ceiling in value after the semi final and final goals but he was never going to be good enough to challenge are front 3 or even give them adequate cover.

Nat Phillips is not our player of the year. Nowhere near.
It's almost as ludicrous as a song for Kabak.
In a very difficult season, Salah has stood out and there are other players that have to be ahead of Phillips.
Alisson, Trent, Robbo, Fab, Thiago, Henderson, Jota for starters.

01 Jun 2021 10:30:58
I’m not saying they are looking to Ed and I really like Matip. His injury record over his stint at Liverpool hasn’t been the best.

In any other season 4 first team CBs has been more than enough (Obviously crazy circumstances this season) .

My personal choice would be. VVD, Gomes, Konate and Phillips that’s all 🤙.

01 Jun 2021 10:48:55
To put all them players ahead of Phillips is ludicrous without him at the back we where losing games left right and Center. He was nowhere near the first team at the start of the season and came in having never played at that level and did not play bad in any game I can remember. Salah goals where great again but from Christmas on are front 3 where all missing chance after chance and was the biggest reason for are massive dip in form. 9 wins from are last 11 games and the 2 draws where when Phillips was injured.

01 Jun 2021 10:51:01
Seriously Rigsby.

Without Nat stepping up we wouldn't of made top 4. Its that's simple!

01 Jun 2021 10:58:44
I have too agree with you there KK96.

I like Phillips but we are at risk of putting him on a pedestal of saying he individually saved our season when that is far from the truth. Anyone remember when Flannigan was labelled the Scouse Cafu. Look how his career then panned out. For me Phillips did exceptionally well when he came in but the run we went on in the last 10 games to get top 3 was a fantastic team effort. Everyone of the players that played had good games and also made mistakes with Phillips being one of them. To say we were losing games left right and centre before Phillips came in is a little far fetched. 11 days before Phillips started at Newcastle where we went on our dreadful run we were top of the league. During that run Phillips played in the defeats to Brighton, Everton and Fulham. For me Phillips stepped up to the plate when called for but I’m not really sure how further his ceiling now goes.
Up against a fully fit Gomez, Vvd and Matip for me he sadly comes 4th and then there’s Konate to throw into the picture. The club need to raise money to buy and at the moment Phillips might be the one to be sacrificed to bring in that money. Whatever happens though Phillips efforts this season will always be remembered by LFC fans.

Couldn’t agree with you more, JK.

And Big John agrees 😉.

01 Jun 2021 12:23:32
think Jurgen Klopp should win all the individial honours this season. A few months ago he had lost the ability to motivate the team, used tired, old, inflexible tactics but somehow managed to right the ship and get us up to 3rd all the while having lost his voice and subsequently the dressing room
boss.

01 Jun 2021 13:32:55
Without Salah’s goals we would have finished in the bottom half of the table.

01 Jun 2021 13:36:03
I agree with Bradley, would like Matip to move on as he will 100% no longer be first choice and in a backup you want them available rather than having serious fitness issues. Fair enough Klopp wants to keep him.

01 Jun 2021 13:50:39
JK23, when you “a fully fit Matip”, surely that is an oxymoron? He’s literally never had a season here not affected by injury? Gomez is also a very long way from being ready to play any kind of football given the severity of his injury. The sensible thing to do would be to invite buyers to take Matip at a reasonable but lower price and keep Phillips as fourth given that he’s not actually made of crisps and is reasonably competent.

The other thing was that defeats against Brighton, Fulham and Everton coincided with us playing with very weak midfields with no proper midfield anchorman (Gini, Milner, Keita v Fulham - Wijnaldum, Milner, Thiago v Brighton - Jones, Wijnaldum, Thiago v Everton) . Notice the change in performance when Fabinho played in midfield again.

{Ed002's Note - The club are not looking to sell Matip.}

01 Jun 2021 15:17:13
Vvvv in fairness mate Matips last 2 seasons have been horrendous with injuries and think in that space of time he played 19 league games. When the 3 seasons before that he played in 76 league games out of 114.
I’m not blaming those defeats on Philips mind. But on the other hand I’m also not praising Phillips for single handedly saving our season. Fab back into centre midfield was a massive factor for the last 10 games of the season but i notice no one really mentioned missing him in the 8 games up to the Palace game that we were top.
I’m all for keeping Phillips but I honestly believe Klopp sees him below the other 4 centre backs I previously named. But that’s only me reading between the lines and guessing. Perhaps we’ll sell Vvd to balance the books and Phillips will lead us to the title next season on his own 😜.

01 Jun 2021 16:08:58
I'm with Victor here but unfortunately we are not with Klopp haha!

I think it's pointless keeping Matip as backup. Top class when fit but will be backup for us so having Nat as 4th choice and even Ben Davies as 5th choice makes more sense to me (fraction of the wages and a much better chance they would be fit) .

Davies obviously has had some niggles since joining but historically has played plenty games so there's a better chance going forward Matip would be injured more than Davies, imo.

01 Jun 2021 19:47:49
Matip is staying cos Klopp ain’t selling him so the rest is moot, really.

01 Jun 2021 22:05:57
We might not have made top four without Phillips, that's true. That doesn't make him our player of the year through.
Nowhere near.
We might not have made top four without Alisson, Trent, Robbo, Henderson, Fab, Thiago, Jota and Salah either.
All of them had far better seasons than Phillips.
