All those people who criticised Wijnaldum for his sideways safe footy just watch him for his country. Until you know what the manager asked of him and what his brief was you have no right to lambast him.

I'm pretty sure Klopp didn't tell Gini to keep it vanilla Jonesy.

I'm pretty sure no one here "criticised" him for sideways or safe football, in fact most sent him off with best wishes and thanked him for everything he did for the club. There are those who have suggested he played within himself when he good have been even better for us but no one is begrudging him, football fans love dealing in hyperboles.

It’s nothing new we’ve always known he plays more dynamic for Holland. But he scored two goals at the Kop end vs Barcelona so who cares what he does in orange.

I’d still rather it was Keita leaving than Gini.

There’s been quite a lot of criticism, some of it going into ill-feeling, of Wijnaldum, at times and especially this past season IronDan.
He plays further forward for the Dutch whereas at Liverpool he covered all the midfield positions.
It was poor management of him by Liverpool ultimately I feel, they should have sold him instead of keeping a discontented player whose heart was clearly unsettled and unhappy and who ran his contract down in the end.
Very strange, and I don’t think he deserved that.
I think he wanted to stay but the money was invested in to Thiago.
I was a great admirer of him anyway and tonight he showed his quality.

Been a good player for us but you’d have to be blind as a bat to not see that he wasn’t even doing the footballing basics for us after christmas. Interesting now that he turns up for the Netherlands he suddenly isn’t ‘tired’ anymore. Even more interesting that a handful of decent performances on the international stage (infamously an unreliable barometer of player ability) have somehow negated all of the frustrations anyone felt towards Gini during his time here.

I’ve seen some hilarious cases of ‘Match of the Day’ fever on this site before but never one directed to one of our own players who only left a matter of days ago.

Makes you wonder how he would have done if he had been given the role Ox, Keita and Shaqiri in the advanced midfield position played. But anyways, he's gone and it's history now and I wish him continued success at PSG. I for one do praise him for many performances but then you can't get away from the fact that during many games he was nowhere to be seen. I'm sure he will say that he perfected his tenacity and skill at protecting and keeping the ball at Liverpool, regardless of what position he was playing.

The overwhelming fact though is that the midfield Klopp devised worked. The proof is in the pudding; finishing second (one point behind ManC), winning the UCL, winning the title after three decades, amongst others. We were flying high for 3 years and Wijnaldum was part of it.

Now let's see who Klopp brings in and what new midfield he is going to devise.

Anonymous Woolback said we weren’t allowed to talk about Gini anymore.

He's just another of these players who plays far better for his country than for his employers!

Makes you wonder how he would’ve done if he’d played further forward?! He won the CL, PL, ESC and the WCC playing where he played so I think he did ok!
I also don’t get the criticism from last season either. He may have been below his usual level but so was the whole team for at least 3 months. He was just an easy target because we all knew he was leaving.
I think he found it very hard being the only first choice midfielder left with Fabs at the back and Hendo injured. Even when Hendo played he played at the back too so in a decimated midfield Gini bore the brunt of everyone’s frustrations because he hadn’t signed a new contract.
End of the day he was brilliant for us and helped us to be the best team in Europe for at least 2 years.
I don’t know the details of his contract negotiations but he obviously wasn’t offered what he wanted so he left. Good luck to him and thanks for the memories Gini. Barcelona especially!
