I hope they give him a chance. I don't see the big deal. In Italy Lippi has managed both Juventus and Inter, As has Conte. Ancelotti has managed both Juventus and Milan, all considered rivals, why can't it happen in this country? Also there have been many players who have played for both sides. It seems all the negativity is over one tongue in cheek comment made many years ago.

Mourinho Chelsea and Spurs.

bigbaz those clubs are not in the same city as one another is the only point id make but I can't see anything but a lose lose situation for Rafa. Taking the pay off/ money out of the situation if and when sacked he will have lost support from a number of LFC fans and tarnished his reputation here also he loses two games on the bounce and he will be hounded out.

I personally don't mind as he is great for our city and without poking ed25 Everton are not exactly a threat to our goals.

Strange one but he's a great man but for me a poor decision.

I think it is perhaps considered more of a regular thing in Italy for managers and player to ply their trade at a number of rival clubs. Bonucci, Pirlo, Stam, Crespo, Ronaldo, Nesta and Vieri are just some of the elite players to have played for Italy’s top clubs.
That said, though I frankly can’t stand Everton, especially in their current guise, I wish Rafa well as their manager. He’s no longer the elite manager he was at Valencia and Liverpool, but he’s still more than a match for all but the best coaches in the game. Everton should be thrilled to have him.

True they may not be in the same city but I could see the same thing happening if he was about to be named man United manager. Everton need stability, Rafa I think will have something to prove and will be there for the long haul given the chance. Whereas you see it as lose lose I see it the opposite. His legacy is set with Liverpool and given the chance I think he can build one with Everton.

30 Jun 2021 14:23:30
Do you not think his legacy with Liverpool is tainted? I don't as i've said but I speak to plenty and the majority is of the same thinking but many do now see him as written off from our history with this move.

In terms of being given a chance I think we can all agree given the reaction from the fans his chance will be short and limited unless instant and sustained success if forged unfortunately for him.

Matt Busby played for both Man City and Liverpool ( where he was Captain) and went on to manage Man United. There are plenty of other examples of former players and managers who have managed ‘rival’ teams through their career.

Jkh1983 really? I'm surprised at that. Each and all are entitled to their view. Personally speaking it will take much more than becoming manager of a local rival for me to forget what he did with the club. Of course I agree that it will only take a few bad results before their fans start to grumble but on the flip side if they can see progression then the nay sayers will slowly vanish.

Bigbaz, Ancelotti did not coach Inter and even said that he had to turn them down this summer before they went for Simone Inzaghi.

Also, Conte never coached AC Milan either so easier for him to go to Inter having coached Juve. Same with Ancelotti going to AC Milan after coaching Juve. The comparison is false.

30 Jun 2021 15:50:58
I know Ancelotti hasn't managed Inter, but Juve and Milan and especially Inter and Juve consider each other rivals.

30 Jun 2021 16:08:25
OK Olired if you take the italy comparison away, there are still numerous players who have played for both Liveroool and Everton. It's not like this is the first time someone has gone to Everton after having been successful with Liverpool earlier in their career. For me his legacy won't be affected any more than it was when he went to Chelsea. He left Liverpool a long time ago. He thinks he can do a job for Everton so good on him.

30 Jun 2021 20:25:10
Bigbaz would you be happy if Klopp joined Everton in a few years because I wouldn’t. That aside, I’d never want Rafa back as a manager so good luck to him.

{Ed0666's Note - why would klopp joining Liverpool be an
Issue? He’s won the European Cup and a league after 30 years surely he has earned the right to manage who he wants? That includes United.

30 Jun 2021 20:34:40
IPC12 I get your point but yes, if Klopp joined Everton in the same manner as Rafa has done then I would think the same, thanks for everything and all the best. It would have been the easiest thing in the world for Rafa to join them and take cheap digs at us to gain some brownie points. But he hasn't. I get why some people are upset but for me he's not done anything to tarnish his reputation as a reds legend and in the unlikely scenario of Klopp joining them in a few years, neither will he have.

30 Jun 2021 23:15:55
Does not include united no way.

{Ed0666's Note - why Dezy?

30 Jun 2021 23:56:39
Managers are professionals just like the players, so I don't see the issue with Benitez at Everton. Why are players allowed to put on the colors of rival teams and not have their legacies ruined if they continue performing well? Ronaldo Phenomeno played for both Milan teams and for both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Eternal rivals. Who questions his loyalty, commitment, skill and ability in the game?

It's not like any of us are placing the bread and butter on his plate, is it? He's been gone 11 years already. Yet, people are expecting eternal loyalty from Rafa. How about you, today, let him choose where you should be working? Make the loyalty reciprocal.

Managers are as much employees, like players, and should be able to choose their employers. Fanatical support is one thing. Sentimental tribalism is another.

Yes Baz many a fan on both sides see the negative in the move its going to be a bumpy ride but let's see what the man can do.
